I have done Google searches and searched the archive for a similar problem, but I cannot find adequate help. My laptop has two graphics cards - I use the Nvidia settings to turn on the better one when I play big games. I have done this for Dragon Age 2, but unfortunately when I enter the Configure screen from the launcher, it only picks up the poorer graphics card, and so recommends a low quality setting. (Ugh can you imagine playing such a game on low quality? Eck.) What am I doing wrong? Any ideas? I haven't even been able to play it yet because it won't recognize the right graphics card. I downloaded the game from Amazon.
My laptop specs:
Acer Aspire 5742G-6600
Operating System: Windows 7
CPU: Intel® Core i5 GPU 480M @ 2.67 GHz
RAM: 4 GB DDR3 Memory
Video Card: I have two, Intel® HD Graphics and NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M
Audio: Not sure how to tell this one, but not sure it's relevant to my problem
DirectX: DirectX 11
Disc Drive: I downloaded the game so N/A
Hard Drive: 500 GB, 313 GB free
Sound:
Realtek High Definition Audio
Any ideas would be great! Thanks!

I don't really have a solution, but I am curious as to why you don't just disable the Intel completely?

I'm not going to edit that to say this, but when you go into the configuration.. When you click on video adapters, can you select the 540 from the drop down menu?
Edit: Or is that what you were referring to when you said it only picks up on the lesser one?

nVIDIA makes a series of cheaper graphics for Intel Laptops that have the entire front end processing removed. They rely on the Intel video to perform the pre-processing, and as a result, make rather poor game systems ("Optimus"). Quite a few games are unable to made head or tail out of systems with such ptoblematic hardware aboard.
(Not saying that all Optimus systems have the problem; the percentage is a large one, however.)

The best place to eliminate the Intel video, if it can be eliminated, is in the system setup (and if there is no option for it there, it most likely means the card is an Optimus, and thus, all too frequently undesireable for game use).

I use my computer for both school and leisure. It heats up quickly when I use the higher graphics card. I leave it on a stand with an fan underneath, but I don't take it to school. I use the lower performing graphics card when I am doing office tasks, so I don't want to disable it entirely. When I've played games like Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion which have configuration utilities I've been able to get it to work, but for some reason the Configuration screen in Dragon Age II won't allow me to select another adapter.
How can I eliminate the Intel video from system startup? When I do "msconfig" in the Run menu, and look at the startup services, there is no Intel-related process.

You could always check to see if there is an option in the bios setup to disable the intel graphics. And if you haven't updated yet, there is a new bios version 1.29 available from acer.

Before Windows ever loads, the system's own configuration is accessible by pressing an appropriate key during the seconds between booting the hardware, and loading anything from the storage subsystems. There usually is a message that flashes on the screen naming the key, but modern systems are so quick getting started that if you wait until you see it, you may miss the chance.
That is the true "System Setup", not anything offered by Windows.

I have a problem similar to this one DA2 insists I have v drivers older than 11.3 when in fact I have 12.4 installed. This forces DX9 and med graphics settings. Huh? Why? Do I need the Hi-rez pack? Also I've tryed to update v drivers through CCC itself and it's saying I have 11.3 installed on the 7th of may 2012???? Now I'm really confused...

You have leftover bits from over a year ago, and need to not only uninstall drivers, but also run driver cleaner, then you can reinstall new drivers. Your problem is only superficially similar; all "Optimus" hardware is 100% nVIDIA, not related to AMD Radeon products in any manner at all.
