I've been playing this game on Windows 7 for over eight months and nothing bad has happened yet.
I'm sorry about what happened to your computer, I really am, (I can empathize, my computer crashed twice with Neverwinter Nights 2) but please don't be so hasty to blame the game or engine or assume that what happened to you will automatically happen to everyone with the same combination because, really, it hasn't, and there might be another underlying cause.

Stability problems happen, that's just a fact of life - people have such varying systems when you include all the hardware, software, and driver combinations you can have, that it is inevitable that any given game will end up crashing on some system, requiring a little trouble shooting and andjustment to get it to work.
Things like checking that your drivers (video, audio) are up to date, and if updating them doesn't help, then maybe looking through things you have running in the bacground to see if some program might be interfearing with DA:O. (For example, ME3 was incredibly choppy, practically unplayable for me initially - the problem turned out to be Comodo security that I had running, and specifically it's "active protection". Switching that "active protection" off solved the problem).
You should try updating your drivers, and if that doesn't help, post your system specs in the technical help forum for DA:O, and describe your problem. Since it's an older game, I don't know whether there still are knowledgeable people hanging around that forum, but it's worth a try. Also google your problem, and if nothing else helps, contact support.

What Swordfishtrombone said. DAO has run well for me on Win XP, Windows 7, and Linux (using WINE).
Back when I used Norton, it tended to interfere with DAO. The solution to your problem may be as simple as getting better computer security software.

I can vouch that the game has always run just fine for me on Windows 7 as well. So in all due respect, ignore the original poster. Buy the game and have fun. Its a great game. The original poster is mistaken in saying that this game cannot be run on Windows 7. There is something else that is going on that is making the game unplayable for the op. I hope he/she are able to figure it out and enjoy this amazing game!

Also on Win 7 x64 here. With the original Origins game I do get occasional crashes. However, I never crash when playing Awakening, GoA or WH. It's always been this way for me, and my most recent play was since the 1.05 patch. /shrug

Can't say I noticed any problems moving to Win 7/64. I get more crashes now than a year ago, but I have a very high number of mods loaded so the well-documented memory leak problem kicks in earlier....

Win 7 Home Premium, 64bit, runs great. The problem is likely on your end.joeil_z wrote...
