As a geth infiltrator I run around with my valiant shooting enemies through walls (30 meters of xray vision is insanely good), capping objectives, playing medic, and doing whatever else needs to be done.

Gold:
Mostly my Asari Adept as an agressive mobile BE platform. Hardly ever go into cover. Just use corners and moving in and out of LoS timed to the rythm of Warp/count/count/Throw/count/repeat. And Phantom stasisser. If sniper present, leave it stasissed. If not, Phalanx the purple away and Throw until dead.
Quarian infiltrator: Just whip out the (slightly rusty) ol' railgun skills and shoot all the skulls with her Valiant.
Quarian engineer: Agressive support. Cryo never works out very well, people tend to shoot my popsicles. Want to shotgun, but until I can get that working for me, pistol whipping it is.
All: Dead enemies don't hurt, so make that happen. But I am one of those that tries to keep an eye out on the flanks as well. Coz incapacitated teamies don't make enemies dead
Will rez whenever possible, but always try to clear out the danger first.

With some builds like Adept I have fun in not using ammos for the whole match.
But usually I'm the top scorer anyway.
Silver/Gold: I check what the other players pick and choose accordingly.
I don't mind playing Turian Sentinel with Avenger X (waiting to update the Geth rifle), overload whoever I can to easen my teammates life
Bronze: TEST LAB
Silver: FUN
Gold: CHALLENGE/GRIND

On Gold I alternate between SI, getting dem headshots, or using A Wild Snorlax's Geth Grenadier build with some tweaks. Basically exploding everything. I also AA sometimes, or play shield stripper/biotic setup man with my Turian Sentinel.

If I decide to play as a biotic class for a change I'll swap the tech stuff by using status and throw.

On Gold, still learning. Usually, HE, QI or AA. Switch to AJ if there is already an AA for more biotic fun.

Of course, when there is a hacking mission or something, I try to be the first to get there, as well as when someone goes down. Only when I know the spot isn't secure (turret, Phantom or lots of enemies around) do I hesitate and take out the problem first. Sometimes I screw up and run into a turret's line of fire or that room where a Phantom is doing some housecleaning, but most often, my team makes it through Bronze or Silver. at times finishing a round on my own or getting killed trying to do so, usually when my team died in a hopeless spot.
On Gold, mostly Firebase White, Geth,* it really depends on what the team does. I don't play that fanatically, I guess, since I have an N7-ranking in the low twohundreds and only the common weapons up to X, still need one uncommon weapon and most of the ones above that, never mind leveling them. I try to be there to shore up a flank, pour fire on that Geth Prime, revive my fallen teammate, achieve the objective, whatever is needed. But it doesn't always work.
* Disclaimer: it seems to me that, to make it on Gold, you need a good team. A good team on random means just getting lucky and quite often you are not and you end up wiping out, whether that is on wave three or six or ten. I certainly don't want to be the one who screws up the game for my squadmates. On Firebase White, there at least appears to be a common strategy, so that I know what my team expects of me and what they will do. I could try to join up with people looking for others, there are some threads for that, but they most often want you to have weapon y up to level x and stuff like that, which I just don't have yet. I'm also still trying out new builds, various power combos, learning about biotic explosions, testing new weapons that I've unlocked, such as the Disciple, etc.

No, you don't need a good team, but it is good to have at least 1 adequate teammate because it often take to long to solo gold. If you have 2 bad teammates you can use them as cannon fodder, don't go out of your way to revive them constantly though because you will only get yourself killed. You don't need level x weapons or level 20 characters, if the team kicks you for not having one of those then they are probably a bad team who can't handle gold without having everything maxed out.
