Do you think it will last 6 months before going f2p? or will it last a whole year like SWTOR?

Yeah but we're in 2013 where the money just isn't there for the majority to pay for a subscription model of $15 a month.

You know what I think would be hilarious? if there were guilds/groups that had corporate sponsorship. Like NASCAR, but for MMO's. There could be a Mountain Dew guild that subsidizes all of its members subscription fees and gets free advertising when its guild pwns in major events.

Come on... who wouldn't love to see a Mountain Dew-colored group of bright green Argonians tearing through ESO?

Stop it, you're giving them ideas.

I'm hoping it'll laster longer than that, but I sincerely doubt it.

Well its not like the p2p model is very effective, the only p2p mmos that are still alive as far as i know are EVE and WoW...well, and FFIV but its only been around for a month

Did SWTOR last a full year? I thought they launched in January and were F2P before October.

If they were really smart, they would begin some large scale community events to supplement the base game material withtin the first month, that way people would be engaged and want to stay outside of the first "free" month. Otherwise, Bethesda runs the risk of having mammoth drop outs after the first 30 days and then have to fight to keep the remaining players, instead of giving them a reason to stay before that clock runs out.

Letting your game speak for itself works in the SP market, but for an MMO, you need to jump start people's relationships and dependencies on each other as soon as possible. Some players will blaze through content unless you make it appropriately (aka, insanely) hard to beat or if there is just mountains and mountains of it (unlikely at launch, even for ESO). But if they make it fun, rewarding, easy and beneficial to work together with total strangers right from the get go and have events that kickstart this process in challenging but entertaining ways, this could go miles in maintaining those users who have to pay for the first "real" month in a subscription model.

Free-to-play MMOs often tend to swing towards pay-to-win-- something I cannot condone in any way. Therefore, I can't help but wish they manage to keep their subscription model.

As a side note, SWTOR stands as a remarkable exception to the trend I just mentioned as of three months ago (when I last played it).

I've always been of the mind that real money should be integrated in a unique way for F2P MMO's, not just as a fast track to becoming over-powered. For instance, maybe there could be a funciton to buy or build houses for your character/group, but that can only be bought with real money. Meanwhile, armors, weapons, items, abilities or functions would all be based on in-game currency (either money or XP, as it applies) rather than on any real world aspect.

Essentially, give one entire function of the game over to being real-money, but don't have it every cross over into the rest of the game experience itself. But that might be highly idealistic.

I concur. Yet, it is uncertain whether such a system would be able to provide enough income to be feasible and, more importantly, if anyone with the power to make it happen deems that philosophy worth the risk.

That is the unfortunate reality. The smaller firms, the ones with a small enough capital investment to make deviation from the established market not complete suicide, are also the most vulnerable if it goes belly up. Meanwhile, big firms, like EA's mobile branches, have the safety nets to survive a bad game, but also have higher production values which tend to lead to "safer" revenue strategies, not more inventive ones.

Which is why, it seems, nearly every F2P MMO has a similar style and feel. Why a subscription model that offers some truly unique draws and gameplay, may be not the worst thing in the world to try and inject some ingenuity into the industry.

A year. F2P is a sign of weakness and they won't to do that to their investors immediately after launch and prior to any "large" patches.

Bethesda is privately owned, BTW. This would be more relevant for EA and SWTOR, but a private equity firm usually has a sterner stomach than the public market.

Just my two cents.

To be honest, ESO looks bad. It's made to be a MMO, and rather than keeping the quality of Skyrim and Morrowind, they just bland those down to utmost unoriginality. Cartoony stuff and convenience-features are damn bad. It rather looks like a less artsy Kingdoms of Amalur 1st person shooter version MMO than any Elder Scrolls (=boring - tho even the art of Kingdoms wasn't particularly fabulous).

Well, any game being made as an MMO with both PC and console markets in mind is, in my mind, going to be a bit of a mechanics and visual trainwreck. I know a few titles have tried to tackle this, but I doubt it would be effective to the level Bethesda is going to be aiming for.

Then again, I could be 100% wrong.

I watched the gameplay video again last night and was wishing they'd streamed it in higher quality, as the graphics look rather bland. I'm undecided on the comic-style outlining around enemies.

Not really seeing why this game has to be subscription based when it isn't really better than GW2 (which is now testing LFG functionality which my friends are using successfully). I guess some people will pay just to experience the Elder Scrolls universe, but I already have loads of that in Morrowind/Oblivion/Skyrim (and might get Daggerfall soon).

Having played the beta for this game a few times now at different stages, honestly I wasn't impressed. They got rid of everything gameplay wise that makes Elder Scrolls games fun (Exploration, looting) and you're left with just the boring first person hack and slash combat engine, which is one of the weakest part of all of the Elder Scrolls games in my opinion.

Not only would I not pay $15 a month for this game, I probably wouldn't even play it if it were FTP...

It's gonna bomb. Zenimax made a big mistake going this route with the Elder Scrolls franchise. MMOs are an all or nothing genre, and this one looks like it's gonna be the latter.

Console MMORPG's are something of a novelty and if the Elder Scrolls Online has the same amount of content as Skyrim and the gameplay quality is up to scratch then the Elder Scrolls Online could enjoy a good year or two of success before gamers become bored with it and stop paying to play it. If it was a PC only game then it would have gone free to play in under a year, the PC market is saturated with games like this and PC gamers can afford to be more 'selective' with what they want to play if they want the MMORPG experience.

Shame really, I earn little over the minimum wage and I can't afford to pay any sort of monthly fee on any game ( thanks to bills and cost of living expenses ), I was looking forward to this but obviously it is now so far out of my budget.

Companies have been sponsoring WoW arena teams and hosting tournaments since '07.  Mostly computer hardware companies but I remember Subway also sponsoring teams a few years back.

What doesn't, Elder Scrolls Online?

It has much more content than Skyrim, just that's it MMO content compared to single-player content.
You can like it or not, but it is there.
