Dear Dragon Age writers and afficionados (but especially writers).
Me and my friends are running a pen and paper Dragon Age campaign and came across a question that resulted in a very heated discussion today. Are circle mages allowed to have weapons and armor (as in swords, maces, leather and metal armor)? Personally, I think that they, being a little more than prisoners of the circle and having more than enough power to kill as it is already, are forbidden from having it. My friend however thinks that's it's perfectly a-ok for a circle mage to have a sword in his possesion. So what do you guys think? In case you're wondering we are talking about a Ferelden Circle.
I would be endlessly grateful if one of the writers could settle our dispute. Thank you.

I guess I fall into the "afficionado" camp. I don't know whether there exists any "official" answer to such a question, and that actually might be a good answer; it doesn't seem likely to me that the issue has come up within the circle. After all, any mage would be far, far more effective in dealing out violence and defending themselves with spells and staves, rather than weapons they are unacustomed to handle effectively.
Don't think that a templar would view a circle mage wielding a sword as much of a threat - or at least, wouldn't view the threat that mage poses increased by the presense of the sword.
Of course there are arcane warriors, but I doubt such things are taught at the circle.
I don't know whether any of the writers of DA:O actually visits these forums - it's an older game, and they'll probably have moved on to other things.

There's a note that you can find in the Circle that explains that mages are not allowed near weapons or, more to the point, trained to use them. It's been tried before and did not end well.

THANK YOU! I knew that I've seen something on the subject in the actual game, but could not find it.
