Romance on a military vessel - really?

Actually, the part that's unrealistic to me is the fact you can be the CO of your own ship by the time you're 29. That's unheard of...unless it's a patrol boat or something, not a highly experimental and high-profile vessel. That, and most COs are not single, because by the time they reach that rank, they're married.
But if you're single on a tin can for long periods of time, you betcha people start hooking up. Technically, if you're CO, you're not supposed to, because fraternization in the chain of command is not okay. However, Shepard is operating separate from the military chain of command as a Spectre in 1 (she and Kaidan make plenty of references about getting into trouble in 1, too, I'd like to point out...they just don't give a darn because they stole the Normandy anyway), and she's operating as a Spectre and civilian in 2. In 3, it's war: the Alliance has bigger things to worry about.
In the real world, you usually don't see Captains hooking up with their crew, but that's because they tend to be already married by the time they get their first command.

While you're not in the Alliance, it starts on the ship. But when you get back in the Alliance, it moves off the ship.
Realistic romances make the immersion more believable.

Good thing Liara, Garrus, Tali, Thane, Jack, Miranda, Jacob, Traynor and Kelly weren't Alliance military. Heck, most of them weren't any military.
Sam is Alliance.
(Also there are romances other than Ashley? Since when?

Speaking as someone who has real-world naval military experience, I don't find it unrealistic at all.

Fraternization is heavily frowned upon (to put it lightly) in the military, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. People were constantly caught doing stupid things in stupid places every time I went on the boat (with rank difference or not). Regarding the commanding officer, I'll refer to the everything in quoted post. That sums it up pretty well.
I'll admit, in game I went with Ashley in ME1 despite my reservations, mostly because I was curious about what FOX news was complaining about and the fact that I wasn't ready to see my main character shack up with a tentacle-headed alien. Once I went for a second playthrough, and then ME2, that went out the window. Now I'd consider my canon Shep's LI to be outside the chain of command, and more compatible personality-wise. Its the end of the universe as everyone knows it now, so Shep's allowed to get randy on the Normandy once in a while in my mind.
