Which is better?
inquiring minds want to know since I've already dealt with both ends of the spectrum. In one case, every other word coming out of the guy's mouth was a curse, and a colorful one at that. It doesn't bother me personally, but I do have kids, and hate having to mute a game because of it. On the other, the gentlemen I teamed up with last night for quite a few rounds were both entertaining and very helpful, especially when one or more was down and in spectator mode, getting the rest of us out of some pretty tight spots with watching our backs.
I've read of people getting kicked because they had/didn't have mics, so I'm very curious to know what the general consensus should be. Thanks in advance for your replies.
To mic or not to mic?

I typically don't use my mic and when I do have it plugged in I tend to keep it off since I don't feel like having to constantly hit toggle switch on the POS that came with my X-Box. Granted, I could just leave it on like alot of people do, but unlike them I find it rude to annoy everyone else with the sound of heavy breathing/coughing/other people/barking dogs/misbehaving children/etc. that they annoy me with.

I play on PC and my mic is on push to talk, so I can talk if I feel like it but won't annoy annyone with background noises.

I don't care if people in my team have mics or not, as I usually don't talk even though I always have it plugged in. Something about getting hit on just because I happen to have 2 X chromosomes annoys me. It does make the game easier to have the team spotting the tougher enemies, but it's not necessary. Most random games on the PC are silent as the grave, I hardly ever hear anybody actually using their mics.

I tend to appreciate when people have mics at least available to alert the team to urgent things, like the fact they got killed by a turret in an alley if you're going to rez them, or that a geth pyro is coming up from behind to embrace me. But sometimes people get turned off if someone doesn't stop talking. I don't care really, it breaks up the tedium of the endless waves.

My mic don;t work but i managed to grab an older mic that someone else isn't using and it seems to work but only if i scream in it so i'm not sure if it picks me up any or not.
I would just like to be able to tell someone there's a phantom behind them when spectating and be able to say something like, i got the devices guys don't worry about it.
If you do have a mic that works you should at least have the courtesy of using push to talk instead of always on and only activate it if you have something important to say, like TURRET!

I use a ps3 bluetooth and luckily it switches all mic communications to the bluetooth so my family/friends cannot actually hear the colorful language and "that's what she said!" jokes coming from my comrades.
They still, however, have to put up with my obnoxious celebratory jeering. I usually have my mic on muted unless someone else starts talking, then I usually join in and have a nice chat while blowing things up.

I use a mic .... with friends in party chat. Anything else I wouldn't use it.

I always ask my teammates if they have mics before the match starts. If nobody replies, I probably won't be using my mic for the match. If anybody says anything back to me though- even if they don't say anything for the rest of the match- I will probably stay on mic. I like to have communication, just in case.

If you use a mic you can set the audio so you can only hear other people on your mic, so your kids wont hear the cursing. It is an 18 certificate, so you wouldn't be playing it in front of them anyway, so I assume you mean from another room. I use headphones and play when the kids are in bed. A mic really helps on gold, but it isn't necessary if you and your team have common sense.

Mic is good, but more useful on Silver/Gold. No excuse for unpleasant speech; It is the Geth/Cerberus/Reapers that need destroying, not the language (!). Particularly no place for grumbling about how poor - in their opinion - other players may be. Useful to know when someone is coming to pick you up, Useful to know where Phantoms/Turrets are and 20 second reminder has prevented many a partial extraction. Proper headset best with mute button and separate volume for chat and game sound. The Turtle Beach is very nice. Please Kinect users, check your unit is not chat enabled, so that we hear every game sound re-played via your TV and open mic.
