The "only play vanguard if you're the host" is not necessary. I have played vanguards many times, rarely as the host, and I've only glitched once. I have had the problem more often that my powers won't trigger and it does get me killed, but it doesn't usually happen more than once or twice a match.

That glitch happened to me 3 matches in a row once, Biotic Charge just wouldn't work when I pressed the button. Bioware really needs to fix this glitch.

The problem is that something about the Vanguard playstyle frequently attracts people who aren't interested in teamwork or smart play. My intuition is that it's a mix of people who are genuinely just bad and people who find success early with the Vanguard and learns bad habits.

I see your point, but once again - i believe vanguards just make it  so much more noticable due to abilities/playstyle. I see plenty of non-team oriented players (i play PUGs silver/gold). However due to "loudness" of the vanguards this kinda draws attention to them and you notice things more. In general, a lot of players are not very team-oriented (Since by silver/gold you're good and everyone just does there own thing and still win...).
On a side note i found that using mic is very helpful to nicely remind teammates of objective/enemies location etc (and usually most players start cooperating)

Not on Gold.  On Gold, you need very good - one might even say PRECISE - timing and zero lag to avoid being killed after a double-Nova.

I don't think throwing anecdotes around is very useful but I'm going to do it anyway - I've played with FAR more bad Snipers than bad Vanguards.  Most pubbie Snipers I play with seem to be from the "Call of Warfare: Black Battlefield" crowd and are obsessed with hiding in their safe little spot taking potshots - usually at the wrong enemies!

Hint for Snipers: You don't need to shoot Nemeses.  No, REALLY, you don't need to do that.  They are the least dangerous enemy in the game (yes, even less dangerous than Husks!)  Snipers need to be shooting Brutes, Primes, Phantoms, Turrets (ESPECIALLY turrets), etc.

Don't waste that Widow shot on a Geth Trooper or even a Cannibal.  Really, I'm pretty sure the Adept with the Carnifex can handle that guy.  Aim for the Ravager.

Snipers seem to be often obsessed with getting kills rather than doing damage to things that are hard to damage, and that is Playing Bad.

4 Human vanguards with a good connection to each other is the fastest way to beat gold.

Having a good connection to one another is not the issue.  It helps, but no matter how good your connection is if a vanguard who is not host dies and then is revived it can and likely will trigger the glitch that randomly prevents your biotic charge from working.  Also, no matter how good your connection is, there is a very slight delay in between completing your charge and when you're able to trigger the nova.  This is in 100% of non-hosted matches.  It's only a slight delay, but it's enough to where it can often mean the difference between life and death especially in gold.  When you are host, you notice it feels completely different and you can trigger nova instantly after completing the charge.

That said, i agree that 4 vanguards when it works is quite ez and fast.  A Vanguard by himself... i don't know, i feel i'm a fairly experienced human vanguard and i do not think it's a viable class for Gold.  The charge / nova combo is simply not powerful enough.  Doing things like using Shield boost equipment for more Nova power helps but there is no way you could convince me it will ever be as effective as an infiltrator sitting back knocking heads off.

Here's an idea to get more people to play and appreciate the vanguard:

They should have a purple ending that you can only unlock by promoting the vanguard enough times. If Shepard's a vanguard as well, he/she will bellow an epic biotic-rallying cry to teleport vanguards of all races(including hanar, elcor and volus) by his/her side. Everyone then proceeds to jump into the beam together for one final charge to destroy the reapers once and for all, using the crucible as a catapult. Yeah... B)

The "only play vanguard if you're host" thing is a bit rubbish. I've only glitched one time and that was today on FBW. I charged a couple of Cannibals at the bottom of the ladder on my way to landing pad for a hack and I ended up high above the landing pad watching the skirmish from above.

But I've had glitches on other classes as well. Once as a Quarian Engineer, the timer for the disable devices reset on every wave. Last night as a Justicar, not only were my controller commands reversed, they weren't even on the screen. Glitches happen.

Kroguards are a different breed... their biotic charge is much, much slower than the other vanguards. A kroguard is really more like a krogan soldier with biotic charge for a finisher. As a kroguard, you will use biotic charge much, much less than a human would, and thus will be less affected by the lag issues.

Or maybe the vanguard is just someone who enjoys an aggressive play-style that complements CQC. Maybe it's because they're fascinated that this game has found a way to offer them an entirely new and intricate way to treat combat, because they're tired of the thousands of other games where you just bunker down behind cover and spray with your assault rifle.

Y'know, there's an answer to this equation that doesn't end in, "all vanguards must have never played the game before or are terrible." Because I have, and many other people, played Vanguard since ME1 and beaten all three games on Insanity because I enjoy, respect, and have learned the class. I'm just going to throw that out there. Not looking for an argument, just saying...Vanguard is my class, and it's not because I'm terrible.

This guy knows what he's talking about.  Hi Five for being an intelligent poster!

If you're not the host, you will always have a TINY amount of lag and while you might still do OK, and your team might still win the match... that TINY bit of lag can and will get you killed in situations where being the host would have had you survive.

So, OK, maybe it's a bit harsh to say "ONLY IF YOU'RE THE HOST" but it's not BAD advice to be "better safe than sorry"!  :wizard:

Now look, I know there are lots of bad Vanguard players.  But there are just as many bad snipers or adepts as well!  Asari Adepts should Probably Not Use A Widow!

It seems like every AA in the public lobbies has a Widow lately -_-

I know. <_<

I make it a point to biotic charge their stasis bubbles just so I can ruin their easy headshot they lined up.

That is not true at all!  I have even directly complimented some people!

Frankly, I don't feel bad at all about talking down to someone who would say something as completely useless and blatantly untrue as "All Vanguards are bad".

Actually I enjoy the Drell Vanguard quite a lot! It takes a great deal of skill to deal with their low Barriers, but when you get it to work, there's nothing more fun than running around three times as fast as everyone else, spin-kicking dudes in the face, then Charging away only to fire off an area Pull on a fresh spawn of Troopers, flicking a Cluster Grenade at them, lighting a cigarette and walking away as they explode.
