Human noble, definitely. The emotional impact was immense for me, both good (the closeness of the family) and bad (losing it all and knowing you fled while they died). Dwarven noble comes in second, in no small part due to Gorim who kicks ass. Bloody shame he's not available as a proper party member. :(

Dalish was rather "meh" and felt very short, though their culture does interest me.  And about the mage origin ...

... I second this. It's all about Jowan, and Jowan's an egocentric, aggravating twit who'd lose to a jellyfish in the "spine" and "brains" departments. Were he credible and likeable as an old friend, were his motives and methods something I could remotely identify with and condone, I would not mind playing second fiddle -- hell, it could be a good change of pace from the constant you-are-so-special ego-wanking. But I just hate the guy and that makes the origin a failure for me. It just doesn't work as intended. The other origins do a much, much better job at giving us people to care for.

Haven't tried city elf or dwarven commoner. No real interest, especially in the former. I don't play games to have that sort of sh*t thrown in my face thank you very much. Too close to home.

Indeed... female is definitely the superior story. Who wouldn't love the damsel in distress who can actually rescue herself?

But, of course, the whole bloodbath in the Arl's estate is suitably dramatic either way.

This is in no particular order:

Dwarf Commoner: First orgin I have played and is my current character, I quite liked this one I got a feel of the lower class of life it had some pretty good moements the proving was great too. I wish I could of kept leeske with me though, lovable personality and if he left with me, he'd end up with all the female characters in the group so easily.

Dalish Elf: Other than the emtional goodbye, it wasn't as interestering as I hoped it would be, but talking to the NPC's and learning quite a bit of lore made it all worth it for me, just.

Dwarf Noble: Words can't describe this one, really you must play this orgin for yourself for the first time to really enjoy this one.

Not entirely sure which is my favourite, I like them all equally for different reasons, though would admit there are some that have weaknesses.

Human Noble - Probably one of if not the shortest and yet sweetest, ok it ain't sweet it darn right reeks of "I wanna kill howe NOW!", but you can never fully appreciate the sweet until you've tasted the sour and so have to go through that sour spot you can get your sweet vengeance later. Part of me still thinks it could have done with a bit more to it.

Mage - Probably second shortest (although possibly only just pipping female city elf) and as at least one other person has mentioned it ends up being more of a 'Jowan' Origin with player tacked on the side. Especially if you don't tell Irving about Jowan's plan. Can someone tell me if playing a female mage when you meet Cullen in the tower later on and you were flirty with him in the origin if there is any followup?

Dwarf Noble - As others have said, solid and gives us an insight into Dwarven politics in Orzammar. Only done the origin with a male so far but was best buddies with Gorim and yes I've met him in Denerim, shame he can't become a party member :(

Dwarf Commoner - Have to say if I really had to, this would probably rank as my favourite. Again brings insight in the Carta and the caste system. Thing I liked about the origin encapsulating the whole story was coming back to Orzammar and for a 2nd time becoming champion at the Provings. As someone else stated, Duncan's comment about the commoner being the Champion really did speak volumes.

Dalish Elf - Really not sure what to think on this one, there is a fair bit I like about it, but it just seemed a bit rushed to me. Also whilst I know of a certain situation that happens through the story, I was wondering if anyone turns up from the Dalish Elfs original clan at the end (or their dad even, seeing as he is mentioned a lot but you never see him).

City Elf - Whilst it probably is a tiny bit shorter, got to agree with others that the "Damsel-in-distress" rescuing herself and her friends really is a good spin on the old tale and like the other origins gives a nice insight to how the city elves are treated.

I enjoyed the City Elf female, Human Noble, and Dwarf Noble Origins the most.

In my Dalish playthrough,

[SPOILER]

my Dalish Elf sacrificed herself and my clan's Keeper appeared to inherit Ameranthine so the Elves could found a new nation.

[END SPOILER]

- Mage : Cullen has some extra dialogue with you if you're a female mage. He still wants you to wipe everything out, however.

- Dalish : Your dad won't show up because he's dead.  If you speak to Anathalle (the older lady down by the campfire in the Dalish camp) she tells your dad was killed by humans (and other elves - city elves).  Your mom gave birth to you but couldn't stand living without your dad, so one day she just walked off into the moonlight and never returned.

My favorite origin so far is probably the human noble.  You could really feel a family bond with the Couslands.  Plus, mom just kicked butt, how could you not love that?!  I was heartbroken and thirsty for revenge at the end and every time Howe appeared in a cutscene I kept saying "Just you wait, I'm coming for you."

I liked the mage origin.  I liked seeing the Fade early on.  To me, Jowan is like the last kid anyone picks for their kickball team.  He's not particularly confident - about anything - which is why I always had a bit of a soft spot for him.  I still went to Irving to try and enlist his help, but Irving opened my eyes pretty quick.  You want to survive you have to play the game.  I really liked how Duncan says in the beginning something like "The mage tower is a place of refuge, but it is a cage, even if a gilded one."  Really stuck with me through the entire game and I played always with that mentality in mind. The mage so far, story wise and play wise, has been my absolute favorite.

The Dalish.  I felt it was a little lacking.  You're tainted.  Duncan comes along and says to "cure" you we need to get you more tainted.  I was kind of like ... how does that work?  Does the taint zero itself out or something?  I really liked learning the lore behind the Dalish and I actually did get sniffly at the end as you leave.  But I just felt that it lacked oomph.  As a Dalish going through the Brecilian Forest and dealing with Zathrian and the werewolves gave me alot to think about.

I haven't played any others yet, but city elf female is next on my list.  My husband liked the dwarf noble origin, which I glanced over his shoulder a few times to watch and it looks pretty good!  :D

I played the mage and it was okay. Had Jowan executed and went with Harrowmount.

Then played as Dward Commoner and it's SO much better. Jowin imprisoned atm and going with Bhelen. There's some great stuff and it has a much bigger impact on the game feeling-wise.

Different perspective (i.e. from the bottom makes for different choices :) )

My favorite origin was the Dalish origin, actually. Not because of the plot (I kept telling Tamlen not to go into the stupid cave! T__T), but because of speaking to the other elves in the camp. It really gave you some insight into the lives of the Dalish and their point of view on the world.

My other favorites were actually the Dwarven ones. I'm about through with the Dwarf Commoner playthrough, and I got very attached to RIca and everything that was going on. It's kind of neat that in this Origin siding with Bhelen is the best choice for your family.

And the dwarf noble origin was just awesome. ;) Yay political intrigue!

The nobles have it - both human and dwarf. I got rather emotional on both counts, losing my whole family in one, and being betrayed by a brother I rather thought I loved in the other. The second one made me want to go back to Orzammar as quickly as I could because I wanted to see how that played out for someone who had something at stake in dwarven politics.

I’ve played them all so far. From best to worst:

1. Dwarven Noble:
+ Dwarven Politics!
+Gorim!
+Shield of Aeducan (only origin-related item you get that I actually used until the final battle)
+Ties in well with the main quest
- The introduction to Duncan
2. Dwarven Commoner:
+ Rica
+ Ridiculous starting equipment. (a mace?!?!?!)
-Ties in well with the main quest
+ Good introduction into dwarven society
+Duncan ( Proving Master: This man has no place here! Duncan, before walking away: Only as your Champion.)
+The Proving. It reminded me of the movie Gladiator. ( A thug who became a Warden. A Warden who became a Paragon. A Paragon who defied a god.)
+ Mother. My character was so awesome that only hearing of the things I did turned her sober.
-Leske
-Beraht
3. Human Noble:
+Ties in perfectly into the main quest
+The end
+ The Cousland family.
+Decent starting equipment
-Arl Howe.
4. City Elf male.
+ This is the only origin that made me angry and emotionally involved with my character.
+ Threatening Duncan.
+ Nice starting equipment
-You can only visit the alienage late in the game.
-Why is the king/queen offering me to become Teyrn of Gwaren? Sounds a bit unrealistic.
5. Mage
+Irving
+Harowwing
-Jowan
-Jowan
-Jowan
-Jowan
6. Dalish Elf
+ Duncan
-Everything else.

Have to second what people are saying about female city elf origins. Really, really nice. But a single most wow moment for me was when my female dwarf commoner rogue was told to remove her helm at end of Provings. The character looked so sad, the way the whole arena went "Ooh!" when they saw the tattoos on the characters face and the expression on Duncan's face. Absolutely priceless.

The Dalish. Liked the 'outcast' feel and their hostility towards the humans. Their vow that they will relearn the old elven ways and never submit to human rule...thought it was great.

Dwarf Commoner, City Elf (either gender, I honestly don't think they're that different), Magi, and Human Noble.

Human Noble probably wins out in the end for me, but the biggest failing of each origin is how inconsistent and illusory their individual futures are. Your choice of origin matters a lot less than it originally seems to, and things like the forced killing of Leske, the nonpresence of Soris until the endgame, the inability to force a search for Fergus, and the lack of real impact on Dwarven politics... all of that really spoiled the origins for me.

I love playing the origins, and thinking creatively about my character after the fact using the origin as a point of reference, more than I like their integration into the main campaign.

Human Noble, Dwarf Commoner, City elf so far. Man those are very well done and get you into the game right away.

My favorite scene is the proving part of the Dwarf Commoner. Man how epic is that? And you really end up feeling connected to Leske and your sister. I even named my dog after him...pity we ended up enemies in the end.

Wow really?  Sorry to hear that.

You should try the dwarf commoner one.  It was the least appealing to me to but it is one of the best ones IMO.

Human Noble. Roland Gilmore is there <3 <3

(Btw, about the "commoner" origins. The city elf was, for me, much, much better and fuller than the Dalish elf.)

Think Human Noble is my favorite. Has a nice mix of humor, tragedy, and ties to the main quest, in that the political resolution that ties to the landsmeet.

I also like (female) city elf, dwarf noble, and casteless dwarf, each one fits certain personalities very well.

Mage was probably my least favorite, for a couple of reasons. One being that there is only 1 mage origin, so wind up playing it repeatedly. But mostly, it feels the most forced. You will help Jowan. Either you tell the First Enchanter and get order to help or you don't and just help. You can't just refuse to help and then stay silent. Don't get that feeling with other origins, that I reach a point where there should be a multitude of paths available, but all but 2 are blocked.

The only ones I haven't played yet are the dwarf ones (I don't have much interest in playing a dwarf character, but I might tackle to origins at some point if only for the achievements' sake). The first one I did was the mage, then the city elf, then dalish, then human noble. City elf was ranking high for a while, but I have to say the human noble really surpassed it for me. I didn't think I was going to like it very much, but my human rogue's quickly become my favorite character, thanks in part to the awesome intro.

I haven't done Dwarf Commoner...

But, my favorite was the Dalish Elf, in terms of just the Origin itself.

The story wasn't the best, but the whole cave sequence made me feel so nostalgic. And I really liked Tamlen...

Dwarf Noble was my favorite. I decided to try something that I'd normally never go for first and it turned out to be freaking hilarious. Personally I'm inclined to be a goody two shoes, but I threw all of my inhibitions to the wind and picked some of the most mean spirited and asinine things to say and do. I got someone killed in under two minutes of playing! I enjoyed it so much that when I played again as a human mage, I totally ratted Jowan out and told him as much to his face. His expression was priceless. XD

I would have to say that City Elf and Human Noble actually tie for last place in my list. Watching my dad flopping around, marinating in his own Ragu, had a pretty huge Narm factor to me. And it was weird that the Terminator/Robocop PC in the City Elf origin was felled by a single ****slap just before they went on to go raze the fort.

This.

Yeah, I can't bring myself to betray someone who's supposedly my friend, so I choose to believe Jowan, but what an ass.  And yes, it's his story, not yours.

I like all the others though.

Dalish - if you take the time to talk to people in camp you get a real sense of belonging, which makes leaving very emotional.

Dwarf commoner - the chance to give all the nobles the finger in the proving was beautiful "hah.  I beat you all!"  And the shakedown of the merchant earlier is hilarious and really makes you feel like a heavy.

Noble - cliched, but they still manage to make it gut-wrenching.  I was disappointed at it not figuring in more to the game later.  I mean you're the child of the second most powerful noble house in the entire country. It should matter a lot more.

Dwarf noble - great.  I knew Bhelen was setting me up, but I have to admit there's nothing I could have done to stop it anyway.
