Achievements, DA:O, and where bioware went wrong

I wanted to write this to express my disappointment in the achievements for DA:O.  What i don't like about them is how i am forced to play a certain way to get most of them.  The only one i didn't get for Mass Effect was the rengade one because i just couldn't stomach playing a character who was that much of an ass and i am cool with that as i was able to get most of the ME achievements by playing the way i wanted to play.  Well in DA:O not only am i forced to play an evil character to get most of the achievements but my character is also forced into homosexual relationships?  I like the idea of achievements.  However, if the only way to get most of them in DA;O is to play an evil homosexual, character, that just doesn't appeal to me.  I think the best approach to achievements is by rewarding the player by playing the game, not how they play it.  Let me note right here that i am not against someone if they are gay or lesbian.  I am just against being forced to play such a role if i want to get all the achievements.  If bioware had just made achievements gettable by reaching certain story mile stones reguardless of choice, or having achievements for using certain skills, spells, combos, I think it would have been much better.  Just my 2 cents.

You don't have to have a homosexual relationship to get the romance achievements.

Have you tried a female character instead? Zevran isn't gay or straight. He was raised by Antivan prostitutes and just likes sex overall.

So then you want the achievement for romancing a male character but want to play neither a male, because that would be 'gay', nor a female because that does not suit your personal sensibilities?

May I suggest that, perhaps, not all achievements are meant to be achieved by everyone?

May I, in fact, suggest that Alistair is also necessary to romance for a certain achievement and that you won't get him either with that attitude?

Just sayin', self-analysis is a lifelong skill. :)

Suck it up and move on then.  The game was not made to suit you and only you.  Your not forced into anything and the achievemets have no impact on the game.

Sheesh, what is the big deal. They are only achievements. Its not like they actually mean anything.

That would be the case. We're not "forcing" anyone to get every achievement in the game, but if someone feels inclined to get all of them then yes -- they'll have to figure out ways to get all the permutations. But that's their business.

May I, in fact, suggest that Alistair is also necessary to romance for a certain achievement and that you won't get him either with that attitude?

Indeed. You'd need to be a female character to romance Alistair.

Anyhow. Good luck with that! Posted Image

All of the achievements I've unlocked were playing as a righteous goody-two-shoes type, so most of the achievements are rewarded by playing the game except where you choose sides or the class specific ones.
It seems you fail to comprehend that this is a ROLE PLAYING game, your character isn't you unless you decide it to be, so the variety of achievements are to promote multiple playthroughs as different characters of different classes with differing personalities

I never understood the concept of achievements or gamer scores or anything like that. Maybe I'm just too old (24) and they are for the post-1990 birthdate crowd. Like xbox 360 gamer scores for example. If I had an xbox live account with a high gamer score, I would be kind of ashamed to let my friends see it. I mean, how dorky is that!? :)

..but I guess spending my time writing posts like this are just as dorky lol.

I'm suddenly tempted to suggest including even more same-sex achievements, but then somebody would want to roast me. On a sharp pointy stick.

i think the whole point of an RPG like this is to explore and expand... and the achievements are fine as they are. nothing you do in the gaming world will affect you in real life so no big deal. so be it if you have to be an evil turd to unlock one -- i don't care, it's something to play for. playing as a male/female Hero and engaging in a hetero/****** romance, i could care less either way and i'm saying this as a predominantly straight woman. DA:O is fun no matter what and be more open-minded because it's just a game.

if it bothers you that much, i suggest saving right before major decisions using the [esc] menu, play it through the way you wouldn't normally, unlock your achievement, quick-save, and reload the save from the [esc] triggered menu to play it through the way you prefer. you'll still have the achievement nonetheless. :D

Wait wait wait wait wait wait wait.

Wait.

This game has ACHIEVEMENTS?! Oh, that's it! That's the final straw! Bioware, I demand a full refund for the entire game and the DLC. This kind of bullhockery of guiding the player along to act like a dog for treats and medals is frankly BENEATH me and I will NOT allow you to cowtail me into playing after your tune!

YOU HEAR ME BIOWARE? I AM NOT A SHOW-DOG! I AM A PITBULL!

David, please sneak in an achievement only possible if you romance Zevran as a male.

Wait... Bioware failed because you made the conscious decision not to utilize all the features available in your purchase?

My brain has literally melted out my ears.

But...  But...  Everyone knows that the more achievements you have, the better endowed you are, and the more irresistable women find you!

That or your a low-down dirty cheat who added them through the console.

I'd totally do Wynne.  Now if there was a super-secret and difficult path through the dialogue options (like you'd have to ****** her off to -90, then she gets the hots for you), and you got an achievement for that, well, that'd be an achievement I could live with.

Who cares for achievements anyway? Why would you feel compelled to get them? They don't even offer any advantages like they do in ME (and thanks for that, I don't need the game to "allow" me using the harder difficulty settings).
