 and why does shepard try and convince tali to "help him fight agaisnt the reapers" instead of assisting with the geth war, when she's already on my squad. Has anyone else had an experience like this?

Michel could still have given him the chocolate on one of your visits to the Citadel. That dialogue always fires, afaik. Not sure about the second one.
