I'm having trouble getting Alistair to hate me. I always seem to somehow gain approval occasionally.

What am I doing wrong?

I try to berate the people closest to him. I try to kill innocent NPCs with him in the party. If I try to berate him outside of references to his favorite people, he thinks I'm joking and gains approval.

What are better ways to upset him?

Belittle his rose.

Apparently that seriously drops his approval.

I don't know how many approval points you lost for that but I killed
Jowan which dropped his approval by about -5 and then killed Connor
which dropped it by another -25.

Now he's at hostile and pretty much hates hate hates my pc. I've also been pursuing Morrigan, which I suspect helps.

Ya that little fit he had after I recruited Loghain made me hate Alistair on my second play through.
I still used him as a tank but other than that i never bothered to talk to him much.
It made sense that he would be upset but he sounded like a spoiled "royal" baby, I accepted the queens decision to have him executed after his hissy fit
