I really don’t understand the mentality of arguing that a RPG should have one single right way for all characters
You can justify all you want how Shepard would feel a certain way, but the problem is that it’s not a single Shepard. It’s a countless number, and not all of them would behave the same.
Why is Shepard so cold to Tali?

If romancing Tali:
1. Shepard never says he loves her. She says it multiple times to him, but Shepard never does. In other romances, Shepard says it to the LI, but with Tali it's like he's uncomfortably avoiding it.
My reading of the very end was that when Tali said she loved Shepard (A very human thing to say) Shepard responded with "keelah Se'lai" which was an appropriate Quarian response. I interpreted it as saying I love you in a Quarian way. Granted thats just my interpretation but for me if I had to choose between my last words to Tali being "keelah Se'lai" or "I love you I would choose keelah Se'lai

2. In the Geth ship, Tali pulls him up from the falling elevator and he just says "I'm alright". Not even a "thanks"? I'm sure this is the same for any other character, but it was just wierd.
Not everything is romantic or should be romantic. They're on critical mission, not the time for pillow talk !

3. On Rannoch, she's talking about how great it's going to be to have a home, and when Shepard asks if the quarians will get used to living in one place and Tali responds about how they've been used to carrying their homes around with them, Shepard silently hands her a rock. Good job, Shep. Smooth. (Edit: I agree this one is on the edge, the sentiment behind it is certainly nice. It just seemed to fit the pattern)
2. Post-Rannoch, Shepard can't even bring himself to ask her to stay on the Normandy. "Because I respect you, dammit" is a horrible line, IMO. That's what people say when they just "want to be friends".
I really liked the Rannoch scenes. The thing with the rock I thought was well done. He was giving her the Quarian Homeworld, literally. The fact of the matter is the Quarians have a home now because of Shepard
Post Rannoch I'm glad Shepard didn't ask her to come with him. Its practically a suicide mission. If you love someone you want to see them safe, especially after delivering them their home. I would have found it unbelievably selfish of Shepard to ask her to come with him

I can see how Shep thought something like that in that instance. But she says it more than once and Shepard dances around it, whereas with some of the other LIs Shepard freely expresses himself.

"Thanks for saving me" isn't pillow talk. This is a minor point anyway, it's the same whether romancing Tali or not. Just part of the pattern.

The rock scene is a nice touch, I included it just because of how it fits the pattern of the rest of Shep's interactions with Tali in comparison with the others, and even ME2. Good point about asking her, too.
