Thank you for the links.

From what I gather, this wasn't a discussion on self-pleasure, but one on fetishes. Masturbation isn't a fetish and neither is using a sex toy. Moreover, this wasn't a planned part of the discussion, but something they decided on that day.

I see this as poor judgement on the part of the professor.

On a side note, I hate those "I'm so sorry you're offended" faux-pologies.

A follow up, he won't be teaching human sexuality next year.

Sex toy demonstration: Controversial Northwestern class won't be offered next year
Decision made 'higher up than me,' says department head
May 09, 2011|By Jodi S. Cohen, Tribune reporter

Northwestern University will not offer a controversial human sexuality class next academic year after its professor came under fire for allowing a live sex-toy demonstration during an after-class lecture.

About 100 of psychology professor J. Michael Bailey's students observed a naked woman being penetrated by a motorized sex toy on Feb. 21. The university said in March that it would investigate the incident; officials said Monday that the review continues.

"I learned a week or two ago that they had decided to cancel the course for next year," psychology department chair Dan McAdams said Monday. "The decision was made higher up than me at the central administration level."

No other Northwestern psychology professor is qualified to teach the subject, McAdams said. Bailey "will have other teaching assignments in the coming year," according to a university statement.

It's good to see there is still sanity in the world.

That professor is a great troll, it seems to me. In the entirely positive meaning of the word, not in the one it has when used on a fellow forumite.

As for the demonstration itself, it would surely be a funny thing to have been there.

Pointless, of course, but funny all the same, if only to tell your friends that your university is holding sexshows.

Well, he also claimed bisexuality wasn't real, transwomen were men with a sexual fetish, and gay men were all feminine and hate football.

He does seem to like the spotlight.

Forgetting the fact that you admitted in your statement that sex is a big part of society, I'll explain it in numbers anyway. Let's see.In the Uk people spend 1.9 Billion dollars a year on pornography. 50% of men and 50% of women admit to actively searching sexually related material on the internet on a regular basis. There are 420 million pornographic related web pages and it accounts for 12% of the entire internet. Pornography receives 4.9 Billion dollars in annual revenue and move about 957 Million units in sexually related material. The largest consumer group of pornography are adults from 35-49, and the average person is about 11 years old when they are first exposed to sexually explicit material. Even though this is the case 70% of women keep their sexually related internet searches secret, even though they account for 33% of all pornographic related searches.
Shall I go on, or is it clear how ingrained sex is to just about every culture? I ask only because you seem to oblivious to the world you live in.
Part of it? Yes. Big part of it? Hardly.
I don't think that proves what you think it does. The only thing it proves is that people like to watch porn.

You are seriously overblowing it's importance. Just like Freud, you seem to think sex is the core of everything - every thought, every action is somehow, somewhere linked to it.

Didn't put your toilet seat down? You harbor repressed sexual feelings for your mother!
You smoke cigars? You suffer from penis envy! Etc, etc...

And you still failed to explain what could possibly be learend from that demonstration....

I still don't understand what your point is.

You can surely
refuse your seat to the pregnant woman and tell her to "GTH" in the
process. It is morally wrong and such behaviors is commonly looked down
upon in our society, but as long as you aren't breaking any laws set by
the government or rules set by the official authority or the company who
owns the bus, there is nothing to stop you from doing it.
And if I was a professor telling a pregnant women to GTFO at a university?

Morally wrong and reprehensalbe behavior is not somethign that should be tolerated anywhere and ESPECIALLY not at hte college.

Good thing they stopped that trolltastic professor.

Actually agree with Lotion here.
Just because many people (very likely a lot of those who post here, even:bandit:) enjoy porn and the likes that hardly means your entire life is governed by sex.

Sometimes, smoking a cigar is just you enjoying the taste of a cigar, and has no relations to penises at all.

And you still failed to explain what could possibly be learend from that demonstration....

Probably nothing. But it would be funny as a sh!ts and giggles kind of thing. Most things you do in university have little use.

But did he do that?

According to the article in the OP, he didnt. He was just giving students a chance to see a naked woman, which is not something I would consider "wrong and reprehensable".

Could you link sources for that? I have a feeling one would be in for an awesome satire:innocent:

You mean if it was intended as a part of your lecture? Well then, I'd be busy taking down notes and asking questions in preparation for the homework or the report.

Remember, we are talking about studies on "examples" of such behaviors, not necessarily promoting them. There is a big difference.

Colleges and universities are some of the few places that are actually more tolerable for these things, mainly because they offer great opportunities for the students to tackle those controversial and sensitive issues rather than avoiding them like in you are in preschool.

I am guessing you were never at college. Cause I know when I was in dorms there was morally "wrong" and behaviour like this happening all the time. It is called the college expierence, you know the place where you learn who you are in life and take joke courses so you can get a degree.

Techincally machine love is a type of fetish. Where one could not pleasure themselves unless with a motorized device. Since almost anything no a days could be a fetish it is an interesting idea to look into the extremes of it. That is what I got out of it. Of couse of everything YMMV, also faux-pologies no matter who does it on what subject are always a slap.

There was at your college, you probally did not see it. College experience, is about expirimenting, having fun, meeting new people and exploring new fronts in yourself and enlightment. Don't be an obtuse.

It's a huge part of it. You've never seen an advertisement for anything?
Yeah thats a sound argument. People like watching porn but they don't think about sex. You're reasonning skills are astounding.

Most people who smoke or overeat usually have oral fixations which shows a lack of development during the early rearing stages of childhood. So someone who smokes could be more likely to have oral sex since they have a psychological need to do things with their mouth. Come on, you learn that in general psychology.

It was a lecture. A speaker spoke about the thing then continued to demonstrate the thing they spoke of. Most lectures work this way.

At any rate, I'm done with you. You're clearly a hermit or someone way too conservative for this age. People f**k all the time, and it's used to sell us just about everything. Why? Because it's a central part of our society. Get over it.

If you get aroused by advertisement I feel sorry for you. Personally I find them rather off-putting.

Yeah thats a sound argument. People like watching porn but they don't think about sex. You're reasonning skills are astounding.

There are different times, and different thoughts at different activities. I watch porn, sometimes. I also play videogames. But I dont think about videogames when I watch porn, and I dont think about porn when I play videogames (well unless it is Rule 34, or hentai games:devil::innocent:B))
And I think about neither when I am learning for university, or partying with friends, or eating a banana etc.....

Most people who smoke or overeat usually have oral fixations which shows a lack of development during the early rearing stages of childhood. So someone who smokes could be more likely to have oral sex since they have a psychological need to do things with their mouth. Come on, you learn that in general psychology.

You learn that by following Freudian logic, which most psychologists consider retarded nowadays. And rightly so.
This sh!t philosophy should have died with Freud and we'd be better off for it.

It was a lecture. A speaker spoke about the thing then continued to demonstrate the thing they spoke of. Most lectures work this way.

Which makes one question the point of the entire lecture.

Like I said before, it is surely good for sh!ts and giggles. I would probably attend with a beer in  hand, and 5 more already drunk, and my weed ready for later, if they had it at my university. But for serious studying? Hell no.

At any rate, I'm done with you. You're clearly a hermit or someone way too conservative for this age. People f**k all the time, and it's used to sell us just about everything. Why? Because it's a central part of our society. Get over it.

Naa it's used in advertisement because most advertisers are f*cking stupid and dont get that all they achieve is make people feel disgusted by their product.
And because they are dumb enough to think we cant find porn on our own.

Let me guess, you went to a community college or you lived in a dorm room and never ventured outside of campus.

I lived in a dorm in my freshman year but I felt the on-campus rules were too restrictive and things were too boring. So my friends and I decided to rent a house instead. Parties were thrown almost every thursday or friday night. Some were big beyond our control but I still managed to graduate with a 3.8 GPA.

It is not about one's college "sux." Your college does not dictate how your experience is to be. It is all in your hands and how you make it.

Studying is important and so is having fun. Afterall, college life is all about stepping outside of your comfort zone in order to prepare yourself for the real world.
