Priority: Earth is one of the most boring end missions i've played in a game this side of 2000. The only thing it got is the awesome talks with your squadmembers and that's it.
The Suicide Mission is amazing, even though i think it's way too easy to get everyone out alive, i still feel the danger and how epic it all is. Using your squad to do tasks without you babysitting them was so awesome. After the mission i feelt that i had accomplished something remarkable, after i complete Priority: Earth i had to rest my head on my hands and frown. What the hell >.<

Yeah there was nothing that really made Priority:Earth stand out tbh :/

Yeah even if the danger is superficial they did a great job of creating an atmosphere so say otherwise!

I like your display picture btw ;D

Suicide Mission. The buildup to it throughout the game was done extremely well.

In Priority Earth the irony is I didn't care about saving earth. I would have sacrificed Earth if it meant saving the galaxy. That was the biggest flaw with the mission is that they assumed for granted because we live on earth we'd be emotionally invested into saving it. I wasn't, I was vested in saving the galaxy. The buildup throughout the Priority Earth mission seemed to be how they could make the next step even worse.

Yeah, there was no emotional attatchment to Earth what so ever. I really didn't care about what happened to it. Unlike the SM where I cared about every one of my squad mates and if they made it out.

Yeah and that emotional attachment REALLY wasnt there if your like me and play either a colonist or Spacer.

Let earth Burn I wasn't born there

Yeah I played Spacer... Literaly nothing there in rgeards to Earth :L

The Suicide Mission.

Why? Well, it felt like I actually accomplished something without having almost everything that motivated my actions taken away from me.

Not to mention that it isn't nearly as insultingly pretentious as Priority: Earth is, with its "boss fights are too video game-y" crap.

The funny part about the stuff the star child said about making Synthetics who will eventually turn on their creaters they failed to remember that yes the Geth rebelled but only out of selfpreservation and SHEPARD made peace with the Geth and Quarians if your paragon was high enough this outcome totally negates the little brats argument.

Then there is EDI and AI with a body who is in LOVE with a human

The Suicide Mission:
  • The Long Walk
  • MFin' THANIX CANNON
  • Jack Struggling to keep the Seeker Swarm off the party, and then letting all hell loose.
  • Never knowing if or when a Squaddie might get killed.  Nail biting for 45 minutes.
  • Inspirational Speeches
  • Wave after wave of platforms.  Those damn Scions.  Not knowing when it would end.
  • Music!!!  Even the final boss music.
  • Giving TIM the finger
  • Watching my LI slide and almost fall off a platform..   I screamed for her.
  • Edge of my seat during the Normandy escape.  Would they make it out alive??
  • I need a cigarette.
Priority: Earth
  • Where's the music?
  • Why is everyone saying goodbye?  We're gonna do this.  Where's the optimism, guys?
  • Where are my forces and assets?  Is it really just us out here?
  • Oh look, another Destroyer.  Really?
  • Wait, I just got hit by a beam.   I'm injured?!  How am I going to finish the game if I can't move??
  • No, they can't... they... couldn't.
  • Mouth wide open.

Suicide Mission: Your whole team participates in small unit tactics, anyone can live or die and you end up feeling like a badass

Priority Earth: You take two teammates to guard a truck, nothing exciting happens and you end up feeling ripped off

Priority Earth:

Suicide Mission, without a doubt the apex of the game, I've gone back to ME2 a couple of times after ME3 and it's quickly becoming a masterpiece to my mind, silly Terminator Reaper and all. Everything from entering the Omega 4 Relay until the end is near perfection.

Suicide Mission, no question. Because a. your decisions though out ME2 (getting the ship upgrades, doing the loyalty missions etc.) have an actual impact. Get the Thanix Cannon, congrats, you blow the Collector Cruiser sky high with no casualties. If you don't, too bad, Garrus bites it. And b. your descions through out the actual mission will determine whether your squadmates live or die and the consquences of whether they do live or die affect whether the mission suceeds or not in the end (the hold the line stage).

In direct contrast, does Priority Earth has this? Aside from determining what color of the ending will be and whether or not a few characters live or die (STEEEEEVEEEEE), no not really. You don't see Krogan charging Ravangers, Turians taking down Maruaders, Salarians sniping Cannibals, Asari annhilating Banshees, or Humans grappling with Husks. You don't make strategic choices of where to place certain species or characters to fight off the Reaper forces. You don't see the rest of your squad with other forces, helping out where they can. Instead you go through a linear path where you and the squadmates that you choose to bring along fight through Reaper forces while on the radio you hear periodic updates on other's status that doesn't really change from play through to play through. Sure there are some pieces of gold in Priority Earth, the goodbyes, the final charge to the beam, and the confrontation with the Illusive Man being the main highlights, but ultimately the mission is bogged down by the lack of choice and reactivity to your choices.

So in my book, the Suicide Mission is the pinnicle of RPG finales and should be an exmple of the future of the genre while Priority Earth is just good. Not medicore like some say, but it is definately not pure gold.

I actually enjoyed Priority Earth. The first mission was chaotic and tricky with times where you could die at any point for no reason. That's good, like a real firefight in a warzone.

But the lack of useable war assets, choices, or even varying cutscenes based on our war assets was pretty disappointing.

And I for one was fine with having no boss battle. The ME2 fight with human reaper was really dumb.

However you really do need a final VERBAL showdown with Harbinger.

Some kind of final confrontation. Something. NOT THE CATALYST.

Suicide Mission definitely was better
When they let you choose who does what role in Suicide Mission, you got the hint that it was not going to be for no reason.

The cutscenes had a sense of urgency especially the tech who was scrambling to open and close the doors

The long walk was a "defend the base" style of mission but was done well and looked interesting

The cutscene where one of your fellows in the long walk got taken by the seeker swarms was good

The speech art the door was a much better one. It felt it had real danger with the collectors pounding the door.

I loved Harbinger's "human you have achieved nothing" speech much better than Soveriegn's since it smacked of sour grapes and implied you poked Harbinger in a sensitive place.

The bad parts about Priority Earth
There is supposed to be urgency but when you try to do things fast, it affects nothing and causes no difference

Rushing was actually counter productive. In one case, the tank that was supposed to be attacked by a rocket did not blow up because i killed the rocket guy and the door would not unlock. Duh, i was supposed to protect the tanks according to Anderson's instructions

No matter what you did, you can never save the tank columns under attack by the turrets on the 2nd floor. Fast or slow, it doesn't matter

Even if you're getting shot by Banshees, cannibals, mauraders, etc, as long as you hit that button on the missile truck, the hits stop and your squad mates walk casually to your side. Yeah it looks utterly idiotic. Even if you hit the last button in the heat tunnel section of suicide mission, the cutscene was still your squad defending themselves

Running for the beam was ok the first time but the second time when you turn back to check what the hell happened to your squad for them to teleport to the Normandy? You find them running in place like idiots

The summarised reason? Suicide mission had the illusion of urgency down pat. Priority earth's urgency illusion failed big time

The SM had the music that matched the urgency. SM utilized your squad in a real way. SM was broken up into ways that made sense. SM had accomplishment. After the SM, it still felt that you just accomplished something that would balance the future battlefield. The ending scenes of the SM when Harbinger is telling you that you changed nothing and you shoot into the swarm while running was done superbly.

PE, many of your assets are no shows. PE didn't have the same feeling of getting through an area with urgency. Music was more along the lines of action BS instead of time is running out so let's get it done mood. Enemies may have been smarter but it just felt like the average arena style fighting. Feels like the game rushed you instead of creating a real urgency. PE offered no satisfactory accomplishment. The music was very recycled instead of each area having its own dominate piece. No mattered how hard you worked or imports you have, Harbinger was right from ME2......we changed nothing.

Agree with all that's been said. During the SM you get to actually make tactical choices, like a real military commander.

Yeah there was a lot of "Your not coming back from this and we all know it" foreshadowing going on in those conversations.

Even with all the parts of Mass Effect 2 that I dislike, the Suicide Mission was probably done better.

However, if I could only play one, it would be Earth, because I hate fighting the Collectors.

The Suicide Mission in ME2 hands down. Epic soundtrack, with quite possibly the best finale battle music of the series (Suicide Mission, The End Run tracks), choices with who to take/choose for specific tasks and whether to save the base or not. It really felt like you accomplished something at the end of the game, and the whole game built up more or less beautifully to that point. Sure, there were some silly points like the terminator reaper, but we can gloss over those easy enough because the rest of the game made you feel emotionally involved and like your choices MATTERED.
