If your EMS is really low and you saved the base, you'll have only the Control ending option.
If you destroyed the base, only the Destroy and Earth get's vaporized as well somehow.

What's hilarious is over 6 months before ME3 me and a friend argued and debated what was the best thing to do with thr base as we believed the bioware line that your big choices atleast matter
. Boy were we pissed when we found out it made no difference to the plot whatsoever.

Yes, you get 10 valuable extra war asset that will surely give you a whole variety of endings.

This IS supposed to be a RPG right? Or is it just some half assed Gears of War knockoff?

Sometimes I can't tell....

The ironic thing being that each Gears game actually has a decent amount of real choices you have to make, which determine which of two actually differing gameplay section you go through.

I think the best part is that my friend who loves Gears of War to death and says it's like the best campaign ever...played the demo of ME2 and hated it.

Then I come here and see everyone yelling "ME IS A GEARS CLONE"

It doesn't matter, don't bother yourself.
Just perform one of the rituals and enjoy the magic show!

Your ****ting me.

Picking which two routes to go is not really a choice, both lead to the same end and does not affect the plot. Your either defending or attacking, no difference.

LOL, that's just a couple of MP matches, what a joke this whole choice marketing was...

It's the same as any decision you have to make in Mass Effect, really. With the key difference being that in Gears you know you're "just" choosing between a path A and path B, and will experience the actually tangligible result of that decision only moments later in actual gameplay.

Mass Effect, on the other hand, hands you false promises of decisions having big consequences one or two games later, and ultimately only delivers a differing line or two depending on what "decision" you made earlier, and these are used a fair amount of times to simply explain why things are exacly the same as they would be had you made the other choice.

Sure, I can give the latter series some credit for being more creative with the scenarios of its many "choices", such as deciding the fates of an entire species, the governing body of Citadel space or a certain treasure trove of advanced but possibly dangerous tech, but at the end of the day these choices stay just that; mere choices, without the consequences we were said to get.

Pretty good summation, we all saw it coming with ME2 regarding council choice in ME1.

But many people still don't realize the trick Bioware pulls here.

I find it just to be horrible game design if the collector base thing has something to do with the choices you get at the end without any comprehensible reason.

People want to see choices matter in a realistic way, not through some behind the scenes math.
The whole war assets system is just a way to cheapen out on choices by attaching numbers to them.

"Choices" in Mass Effect are as meaningful as whether or not you decided to give Aerith a flower in Final Fantasy 7.

then I should load my save game and blow that collector based and not have to worries about my team member keep saying I should destroyed it instead of handing it over to cerberus :)

Taken from the IGN Game Guide:

Note that the Effective Military Strength values will slightly vary depending on your decision to save or destroy the Collector Base in Mass Effect 2 (add 300 points to each tier if you imported a save with the Collector Base intact. [Note that saving the Collector Base gives you an extra 100 EMS, so you really only have to earn 200 extra EMS.] The game assumes that you destroyed the base if you do not import a save.)

Another choice from ME2 being rendered useless in ME3. What is the point? Saving or destroying the collector base does nothing. It's just one of hundreds of choices made in Mass Effect game play that doesn't benefit anything in ME3. I was disappointed when nothing came of it for me choosing to destroy the Collector Base in ME2

Not because of you guys, because of all the time I wasted replaying 1 and 2.

What nonsense.  You "wasted" your time?  What, was it some kind of drudgery to play ME1 and ME2?

Not to mention, if they had made the base matter in a huge way, it would have pissed people off to no end.   "You jerk, you gave the collector base to cerberus and now their troops have wings and better guns and armor."   would have inevitably turned into yet another "Bioware hates Renegades" flamefest.

Not in any meaningful way. But I suspected that in ME2. I interpreted the choice as "Do you trust TIM?" This lack of variety doesn't automatically detract from ME3 but it is a horrible waste of potential.
