I kind of hoped Samantha Traynor was of Indian descent. Her ethnicity is never mentioned and I know there's a decent Indian population in the UK.
Yeah I assumed Traynor was Indian. Vega is hispanic. Anderson is of a very mixed ethnicity according to the books. Cortez appears to be a similar mixture. Ash looks a little hispanic to me with that little bit of a tan and dark hair. Jacob's black. Chambers looks like she may celebrate St. Patty's day. Kasumi is Japanese. Kaiden is...something I don't know...a little Japanese maybe? Is Alenko a Japanese name? Your own Shepard can be whatever. That's allready 100% more diversity than is present in most other video games.

That said, I have a feeling that base appearances were meant to be quite a bit more diverse-looking (not going to get into names or anything; those can be anything in The Future™) but because BioWare attempted to keep old appearances somewhat close and didn't upgrade the face tech much since game 1, they were very limited with the generated faces looking all the same.
That and I think BioWare needs to hire a few guys who specialize with modeling humans and faces archetypes and stop relying on the face scanner to make memorable (scary) appearances.

I assumed Alenko was Polynesian of some sort. Or just another mix like a Hendel Mitra.
Don't forget our favorite Afrikaner!

He is South African. Watch Lethal Weapon 2 or District 9.
Trust me. That is an Afrikaner accent.

And they should have forced Anderson to speak with a British accent! XP
That guy is NOT from London!
Revelation explains why he doesn't have an accent. *pulls out my book*:
"The file showed Anderson had been born and raised in London, but he had almost no discernible regional accent. His generic dialect was likely the product of cross-cultural exposure through e-schooling and the info nets combined with a steady barrage of pan-global entertainment vids and music."
Really? Really?
They couldn't just say he was born in London and his family moved soon after or something?
Nope, since they say that he grew up in London. Though they should have said that his family lived on an American army base in the UK or something like that...
Why would the UNAS Army have a base in EU territory (assuming the United Kingdom gave up it's sovereignty to the European superstate)?

Yeah, but thing is, the guy who does his voice also does Ken Donnelly and lets that accent through a bit too often. The VA is Canadian, at any rate.
EDIT: Also he is Veetor's voice. He just waffles between the Donnelly and Veetor accents too much with Hock that I can't convince myself he's South African.

Don't make it more than what it is. He's not a native so he's doing his best. It gets muddled. Like Mrs. Doubtfire.

The reason we have bases in Europe is because of our obligations to NATO, under the North Atlantic Treaty. In all likelyhood, in the Mass Effect universe, NATO is a thing of the past.
The European Union in the 22nd Century probably has it's own unified military. The UNAS wouldn't have any reason to have bases in Europe.
The only way I can see the UNAS having a military presence in Britain, is that the U.K. pulled out of the EU at some point, and has some sort of mutual defense treaty with the UNAS.

Check the codex for the commander of the third fleet. Admiral Nitesh Singh. And Dr. Bryn Cole's accent has hints of a Bombay accent.
Also in Mass Effect's timeline, it would seem ethnicity has taken a back seat to determining someone's origin. It owuld seem where one's colony is at is the new deal.
Again as someone of Indian origin, I really don't find to lack or presence of my ethnicity a deal breaker.
Agreed.
Let's also point out that Prime Minister Shastri was presumably from India and he was - before the reapers obliterated Arcturus Station - the Prime Minister/Leader of the Alliance.

I understand that the Alliance is pan human. But that doesn't mean all humans who joined the Alliance have forgotten about their country and culture.
