An interesting interview with Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins and Zwan on the state of the music industry.

Watch the Interview Here[/quote]

He makes a lot of sense.

And I was expecting it to be all about this.

Music is by no stretch of the imagination my area, but it is really commoditized, he's got a point there. Anyone can make it, so value goes down. And music has been a bit out of the media-how many ads do you see for music?

But then again, 3/4s of the stuff I listen to is 10+ years old. Lol.

Billy is one of the few musicians like Jack White, Damien Rice and Tom Macrae who don't mind people sharing their cd's via torrents as long as they promote their music and see them live.

The things I took away from this exchange were:

1) Talentless people getting lucky with one catchy song are responsible for the lackluster quality music and inundation of talentless "artists."

2) Unfortunately musicians can't survive on just being talented anymore.

3) The state of the music industry is depressing for music lovers.

Today's music summed up in one song:

Most of the music of today sucks. Concerning the song above and they actually show a more censored version of that on the radio. How it got on there in the first place is beyond me. I'd rather listen to Rick Astley than the crap above which is just some guy repeating the same lines over and over again while talking really fast and swearing. They call that music?

The state of music is bad. Probably worse than the state of video games. The only genre that still seems to be producing quality good music is electronica...and I'm only kind of into it as something I'll listen to once in a while (trance, jungle, house)

Keep up the good work, I want to see music is dead and then start my reforms!

In 2012 Pop is sh*t, Jazz is dead, Rap is dirt and Metal is madness as it always has been.

Largely True now its mainly people singing about screwing you in a car or night club, or bad haircuts singing the same word over and over and over.

I blame Britney Spears. She has cursed the music since she began singing!

If you look hard you can find good Rap and Metal songs, but still nowadays both genres are not as good as they once were.:?

@Tigerblood and MilkShakes But the best songs from Gorillaz came after 1999!=]

I'd say since '85, when Live Aid showed the more unscrupulous publishers the way to immense profits without having to deal with pesky bands wanting to create their own stuff.  There did seem to be quite a big shift around that time from the radio largely reflecting what people listened to over to trying too hard to dictate what people listened to.  The latter was always true to an extent, but it seemed to become far more dominant around that time.  Oldies in the UK may remember Radio 1 sacking all its more experienced DJs and replacing them with more pliable presenters.

The industry has become thoroughly commercialized - the music and the "artists" who create it are... dumbed down and heavily marketed to appeal to the widest audience, and thus generate greater profits for the suits running these big shot companies...

...say, that all sounds very familiar. I wonder where I've heard that before...

I think that's a reasonable enough gripe in itself.  Although good music has gradually become easier to come by in recent years, the scene was much different when I was growing up in that the mainstream stations were much more vibrant and diverse.  I miss those days, even though it makes me sound like an old fart.  Which I am.

I hope you're not talking about that pretentious indie crap that hipsters listen to - I honestly think I'd rather listen to Katy Perry than any of that garbage.

No, no.

That stuff's too mainstream for me.

If you've heard of it, they've already sold out, as far as I'm concered.

Good music is still being made. I don't really care anymore how popular the music I listen to is, but I can't stand 99% of the music I hear on the radio. Some of it makes me want to go "Hulk smash". This isn't about being a hipster, I just know what I like and what I don't like.

Gotta disagree with you here. Independent music was a real culture of music and was made by real musicians wanting to make good music. Then Feist went ahead and did an Ipod nano commercial and the rest went to s**t. A real way of knowing if the musicians claiming to be independent musicians really are is by judging their venues. You wont see Tegan and Sara, Regina Spektor or The Kloot being pushed on any website or "music" channels, but you will see them releasing acclaimed albums yet still having to play at bookstores, coffee shops and the occasional dive bar to make a profit.

So the problem isn't indie rock, it's people like Feist. She was part of a big band ensemble making very independent albums, then thought she could get more exposure by selling out. But by trading the integrity of her medium for fame it turned around and bit her on the ass.

What happened to Feist you ask? The same thing that happens to most of these people. It's a popularity contest and not about the music. People forget Katy Perry was a christian pop singer, and quickly realized that s**t wasn't yeilding any results. So what did she do? Started dating the front band of a one-time popular band and had him feature her in almost all of his videos. Now she's the biggest thing in the world realing such weakly written songs that they make the ME3 ending feel like a Tennesse Williams' play.

Meh, I just don't like any of that s***. A lot of it strikes me as being different solely for the sake of being different - y'know, like hipsters.

Then again, I'm one of those diehard classic rock and metal purists who thinks just about everything new sucks, by virtue of the fact that it's new.

Should I have picked Labrinth (their earthquake single gives me a headace) or Professor Green (I don't care if your mother wasn't there for you. STFU) instead? They suck just as much. Concerning singers though and Emeli Sande is good and so is Adele. Rihanna's good too but she has a few songs out which suffer from the repeated words syndrome to the point where the song becomes boring and annoying and most of her songs are about sex too.

Then again most songs today are about sex and one night stands. The lyrics are terrible as a result.

"I want to make you sweat while I stick my pipe in yo ass and ride you all day and all night and then ima gonna stick my head in yo ass and lick yo smelly little ass all night and all day. Ooooohehoooehehehehoooooehehooo."
*Repeat until the end of the song*

Personally I think choral music is the best as the melody itself tells a story.

Here's Water Night by Eric Whitacre:

That garbage you hear on the radio can't even compare to the beauty of the song above. There's true human soul in it and it holds meaning.

Hell's Music: Labrinth. Professor Green. Tyga. One Direction. Ed Sheeran. Azealia Banks.

Heaven's Music: Eric Whitacre. Gregorio Allegri.

Hell, I hear game tracks that are better than the songs on the radio. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow contains some rather epic scores.

I had no clue who either of those people were until just now, apparently they suck though. I try to listen to good rap artists.

Me thinks he's uneducated about Rap music. No one can say they respect music and listen to Asheru, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Wu-Tang, or Nas and say the entire genre is bad.
