I just started my insanity playthrough on my Shepard I've had since ME1. However, I was wondering if it was possible to switch things up, in terms of who I romance. In the First Mass Effect, I romanced Ashley. Now, I would like to know if I could possibly romance Liara in the third Mass Effect. Any pointers would be appreciated, and if it's not possible please let me know so I don't waste my time. Thanks!

It's rather easy. Just avoid Ashley's "lock-in" dialog or turn her down when you reach it. If you complete Liara's lock-in dialog without turning Liara down, you don't have to worry about Ash's lock-in dialog. It will default to friendship-only. There are no love-triangle confrontations in ME3 romance options.

Another option is to tell Ash to go with Hackett instead of coming to the Normandy. (This gets you +25 war assets when you tell her it's not a good idea for her to be on the Normandy.)

The lock-in dialogs happen after the Cerberus attack on the Citadel. You have to leave the Citadel after the attack. Once one person is locked-in, all others are locked out into friendship roles only.

They will send you an email to come meet them (or you can just show up on your own). That's the lock-in conversation noitification, but it's possible to encounter them before receiving the email (such as turning around and returning to the Citadel without going anywhere).

(The only confrontation happens if you cheated on your ME1 LI in ME2. That's early on in the game, though.)

If only you could have something in this case like the "turned-down photo" of your former LI in ME2 if you switched after ME1...I grinned to see that.
