Manipulations by
akg.writes.This is a fantastic, long story (300,000+ words) that really delves deep into the characters. It's set in ME2 after Shepard has recruited her squad but before the suicide mission. Shepard (FemShep) used to be a normal (well, relatively) soldier but was resurrected with biotic capabilities by Cerberus, and now she needs Kaidan's help in dealing with her new abilities. Not too surprisingly, Kaidan and Shepard are somewhat at odds after Horizon. What's special about this fic is how much time it spends inside the characters' heads which can be both a plus and a weakness depending on the reader. I was able to appreciate the level of detail given to the characters and their thoughts, but if you're just looking for action or for the plot to progress quickly, you might be somewhat annoyed to stumble into a 20-page flashback in the middle of a conversation.
The writing is really, really good, although it could have used a little more polish in terms of checking for typos. What's more, the fic is really, really funny a lot of the time, but it can also be very moving when it needs to be. The characterization is great throughout, especially with Shepard and Kaidan, who are the focus of the fic. However, other characters, such as Miranda, EDI, Thane, Kasumi, and Garrus also get plenty of pages. At this time, the biggest problem with the story is that it's unfinished, although hopefully the author is still updating it. At this point in time, this might be my favorite or second favorite Mass Effect fic (Interstitium's close).

ElectricZ's loosely connected fics
Just Like Old Times,
Friends Like These,
Second,
The Lioness and the Bull,
Tomorrow's Dawn, and
For Tomorrow We Die. The first four stories are all fairly short, well-written character pieces. My favorites are Friends Like These is which is a very funny fic about Shepard being investigated by his friends and Second, which examines the command structure and tensions aboard the Normandy with the absence of Shepard. Tomorrow's Dawn is an interesting look at Tali being tasked to attend to Legion after it had fallen in battle, which forces Tali to examine her feelings about the Geth. For Tomorrow We Die is the long fic among this bunch (140,000 words) and it continues the story directly after ME2's suicide mission. It has some very interesting ideas about the political picture in the galaxy. It's an interesting read, but I wasn't that fond of some of the later plot twists. It also remains incompleted although the author has posted his/her story notes on what would happen at the end. In any case, ElectriZ's writing is solid throughout, and if you're not a fond of reading very long stories, you can pick some of his earlier ones without really worrying about continuity between the stories.
