Unfortunately, I am guilty of this. I don't leave many reviews typically because I actually write them out. Instead of the typical "Update soon!" or "This is really good!" I actually make notes on consistent grammar mistakes, characterizations and just generally what the author did or didn't do right. I make sure to leave plenty of praise, where warranted and constructive comments throughout and the result is a very long review.... So, in essence, I get too lazy to do it right, because I will not simply leave a sentence or two on a work. If I'm going to make the effort, then the writer deserves more than that.

Do you normally just leave a single review for the whole thing? If so, maybe doing chapter-wise reviews might help with this – you can still address trends and so on as you go.

I haven't reviewed at all, lately. Mostly due to the fact that I wasn't signing into my account so I wouldn't feel guilty over my six month hiatus.... But yeah, when I did review it was typically over the whole work, so I'll have to try your suggestion. Would be easier to keep track of all the different stuff I put in reviews.

Compromise: leave a review that just says “I read it!”

A few people on another thread posted links to FanFictionDownloader and FLAG, both of which allow you to download fanfics from numerous sites in different formats such as EPUB, PDF, MOBI, etc. You can just save the fics to your computer and read them there or transfer them to an EBook reader. Since then, I was trying to figure out the best way to organize these files, and soon came to the conclusion that Calibre is an excellent tool for this. I just now realized that there's a FanFictionDownloader plugin for Calibre, which makes it even easier to download the fics to your collection and which automatically gathers information such as word count, fandom, characters, etc. to your library. I'm just now trying to tweak the settings so if anyone uses this kind of setup, I wouldn't mind hearing suggestions.

In any case, the benefit of having the fics organized in a collection like this is that you can find out easily what you're looking for. Want to find all completed Mass Effect romance fics with the Shepard (F) / Kaidan pairing, with a rating of 3 stars of more, with a word count of over 50,000? Not a problem! Not to mention you can see which fics are in-progress and download new chapters with a few clicks.

^ Definitely good software. I’ve just been using Readability myself, but its a little more involved if you try to create structure to it.

Just going to add my humble contribution. My part of the story is done, Male Shep with branching paths during the end of ME3, including most of the romances covered.

The co-author is doing FemShep's portion, still WIP.

Love that Jack comic, BTW!!!

I've heard good things about Calibri. I use Scrivener, which is also very good.

A great touching, atmospheric one shot fic: Harvest by Norwest.

"Was this the first time a geth asked if it had a soul?" - "No. It was the first time a Creator became frightened when we asked."

The Long Walk is a nice Jacob-centric short fic that also features a well-written Kelly and Joker. This one's by Prisoner 24601.

Another recommendation:

Mass Effect: Interregnum by The Naked Pen. I had actually read some of this more than a year ago, liked it a lot then, but then promptly forgot the name of the fic. As soon as I started reading this again, I remembered how good a fic this is and I'm now happily rereading it again. So, with the warning that I'm only three chapters in and that I have hazy recollections about the rest of the story (which has been updated quite heavily since my last read), I can safely say that is among very favorite ME fanfics. The fic is about Garrus's time in Omega after Shepard's death, it's in-progress, around 260,000 words, and filled with action and humor. A lot of fanfic writers can't really handle fight scenes, making them monotonous and managing to bore the reader. This is definitely not the case here as The Naked Pen is able to keep the action varied and interesting. The fic is also a great look into Garrus's mind, and the dry comments of his inner voice are amusing and insightful. The writing is well above average and the plot... well, I vaguely remember there is one. I'm sure it's good. Really, I'm usually very skeptic when it comes to fanfics, but based on the sample size so far, I'd be very surprised if the fic doesn't retain its high quality.

Another recommendation for Rae D. Magdon's ...Can Wait series, these weren't listed in the OP yet:

Ilos Can Wait, Hagalaz Can Wait, and Cronos Station Can Wait by Rae D. Magdon

An explicit extension of the Liara/FemShep romance scene before landing on Ilos. Beware of mush.
Mass Effect - Rated: M - English - Romance/Drama - Chapters: 1 - Words: 4,130 - Reviews: 16 - Published: 3-3-12 - Liara T'Soni & Shepard (F) - Complete

An explicit extension of the cinematic after Lair of the Shadow Broker - Liara gives Shepard something to come back to. Sequel to Ilos Can Wait, Liara/FemShep
Mass Effect - Rated: M - English - Romance - Chapters: 1 - Words: 3,921 - Reviews: 11 - Published: 3-13-12 - Liara T'Soni & Shepard (F) - Complete

Sequel to Ilos Can Wait and Hagalaz Can Wait. Liara comforts Shepard before the start of the final battle. An explicit extension of the cinematic before Cronos Station in ME3.
Mass Effect - Rated: M - English - Romance - Chapters: 1 - Words: 4,503 - Reviews: 22 - Published: 3-26-12 - Liara T'Soni & Shepard (F) - Complete

Explicit versions of the romance scenes in the three games, but quite tastefully done and with an interesting view of the asari melding process. Definitely not for kids or for people who don't like the FemShep/Liara pairing.

--

In addition, I gathered all my recommendations in this thread (12 so far) in a single blog post for both my own convenience and for anyone who's looking for fanfic recommendations.

So, this is a little piece I've made. The events surrounding attack on Mindoir, loosing home, parents, friends... There is a small gay subplot 16/18 y-old; originally, it was there, then I've wrote it out, then back in. Tried to take into account the lore. Also, I've tried to dust out spelling mistakes, but there are some grammar issues (I'm not a native English speaker).

Appreciate every comment and critique!

Does anybody have any favorites (From the current submissions)?

The “Dark Energy” series, absolutely. The others in my top five right now are “Of Sheep and Battle Chicken”, “The Beautiful Indifferent”, the “Valkyrie” series, and I’m really liking the “Spirit of Truth” mentioned just above, although I’m not very far in.

Seconding the "Dark Energy" recommendation -- hadn't heard of it until this thread, and then went and lost a sizable chunk of my weekend thanks to my complete inability to put it down.  Seriously one of the best fics I've read (in my considerable fic-reading history, which spans many different fandoms).

I say this without deriding fan fiction as a whole, but “Dark Energy” is a sci-fi novel trilogy.

Word.

Y'all are making me blush again :) Glad everyone's enjoying it. Image IPB

I don't mind sharing mine. It's all FemShep/Kaidan except for 'Passing Back the Torch' which is Kaidan/Thane. Mostly 1 shots, with a couple of stories that have a few chapters.

Just published"Blackwork Tendrils: Pulling Up Anchor" by PestoMonkey: Kaidan Alenko/Steve Cortez (M, Romance, Short, Complete). Steve Cortez had mourned his loss, but little did he know he would find love again when he least expected it. Takes place during Chapter 3 of Blackwork (companion story).

My first M/M. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out but would be grateful for feedback.

Some of my most favorite fan fiction stories:

Gestalt by Anne Whynn

Beating Like a Hammer by skybound2
Garrus doesn't know if she is real, or a hallucination, but when Shepard storms back into his life on Omega, he finds that he doesn't much care. He just knows that he's not letting her go again, not if he can help it.
Rated: M - English - Romance/Hurt/Comfort - Chapters: 4 - Words: 18,119 - Reviews: 28 - Updated: 5-3-12 - Published: 4-30-12 - Garrus V. & Shepard (F) - Complete

One Night on Noveria by servantofclio
A surprise attraction between two Normandy crewmembers develops into something more. Liara/Garrus; references to FemShep/Kaidan.

Seeing as there is only 2 fics in the crossover section I'd like to make my small contribution.

The mission stays the same

It's a crossover with Warhammer 40k universe.

Here's my fic:
Invictusmythlover20;FemShepxThane; My interpretation of the Invictus rumors that were circulation on the Thane Thread about three months before ME3 came out. Acts as if ME3's Thane "Romance" (or rather lack of it) never happened. Also a number of inconsistencies since this was written before ME3. There's an author's note explaining it all in there.

And one of my all time favourites:
The Thirty-Six Stratagems of Wang Jingze Mussim; FShepxThane; AU ME3, Shep gone Rogue. Very, VERY good!!!

Here's one of mine: http://social.biowar...index/9828201/1
And here's its mirror-image: http://social.biowar...5/index/9828647

Whether you can call it a fanfic or not is really up to the reader. It's fiction, non-canon, written by a fan, who wouldn''t mind seeing it be canonized. Sounds enough like 'fanfic' to me. :P

I meant to check this separately, but sorely lacking time. Any other characters but Shepard? Rating, style?
