After like 4 of continuing losses, EA actually made money in Fiscal Year 2012 - $76 million net income

ME3 made over $200 million in retail

full report here: news.ea.com/portal/site/ea/index.jsp

Investors conference call starts in 15 minutes (2pm Pacific Time), maybe we will learn more about ME3 sales numbers (and Fifa Street numbers, and Amalur numbers etc)

That's good news, maybe the Extended Cut will be of any quality because of this.

Over 200 million?

That means over 3 million copies were sold.

I hope they are satisfied. That way we could get some decent DLC at least.

Meanwhile, ME3 is still a shell of what it could have been.

Goes to show that you really can bank on the name alone.

Yet I would hazard a guess that those figures do not include the cost of servicing debts from the market or payments to creditors which I believe comes after the GAAP calculation. Ipso facto the net income is potentially far smaller, depending on how leveraged the company is and it's payment schedules.

In other words, don't bet on getting a higher quality of ME3 extended edition because of this.

ME3's sales were never in jeapardy, the real question is how their next games will sell...

I agree, they'd continued to make a lot more money of the game had lived up to it's expectations and potential.

I think they've lost a lot of sales because of this ending debacle, something that EA has to learn is that you don't gain anything in the long-run by releasing unfinished games.

Most expensive game ever developed( including marketing) is GTA IV with around 100 million USD.

So I doubt ME3 had even bigger expense.

But how many of those copies were returned?

Me too, but with the 'Extended cut' I just don't see how they can do anything but further disapoint people. Like rubbing salt in a bad wound.

The ENDINGS justify the means.

What? I'm speaking of the company finances not the product. Mass effect is a tiny expense compared to all the overhead costs of running the Company, not including the expenses of other IP development. Or are people under the impression that the $76 million refers just to income from ME3? The fiscal statement deals at a company level, not an IP level. EA has to service any additional expenses for from that profit or distribute to shareholders etc.

Their business model for ME3 is confusing to me. They want more subscription-based games and DLC, but why close off the ME3 universe? With a slightly different ending they could have monetized ME3 with so many extra expansion packs.

Not really they have the MP, I think they'll pull a CoD with the map packs and such. It's more cost effective than developing expansions.

76 million is the GAAP number

Here's a chart of their GAAP income/losses over the years:

ME3 is where the transgression took place... the financial response would never be felt here.  Only Bioware's perception/reputation has taken a hit for this launch.

The first "round" is their next game.

Maybe I'm a bit pessimistic after the whole ME3 ending, but the fact that EA made money while rushing out games, means they may continue to do it in the future. To me, its just foreshadowing BioWare's quality going downhill.
