Yet I would hazard a guess that those figures do not include the cost of servicing debts from the market or payments to creditors which I believe comes after the GAAP calculation. Ipso facto the net income is potentially far smaller, depending on how leveraged the company is and it's payment schedules.

76 million is the GAAP number

Here's a chart of their GAAP income/losses over the years:

GAAP simply stands for the Generally accepted accounting Principles. It does not account for company leverage, nor future payments required to service that debt. EA made a GAAP income of $76million. It still has to service it's comapny debt to creditors, expenses and overheads for the next fiscal quarter from it's income. I doubt it has used the majority of the revenue to pay the debt which is sure to have inccured from it's previous fiscal years.Which begs the question, with many of it's large IP's already released, what's it's fiscal outlook set to be next quarter, with a diminished income.

Remember, though, that increased profits could as easily result from decreased costs than increased revenue.

Actually, this doesn't prove anything.
There was no question about Me3 sales.
They over hyped the game and failed to deliver on a lot of their promises.
To actually make such a statement and have ground to stand on, you'd need the numbers for the next game.

You need to keep in mind that it's extremely difficult for anyone to return the game after they've already played it.
So unless you rented the game, you would have to buy it and beat it to have a complaint about it.
So these numbers really mean nothing in regards to whether ME3 failed or not.

Image how much more money would have been made and how many more copies bought if they took the time to write a good ending, I know some people who completely avoided ME3 because of the ending reviews

No ****? maybe that has something to do with the majority of stores having a no return policy? or impossible to return a digital copy? you can go to any gamestop or second hand video game store and see how many copies they have sitting on their shelves. Ask any employee how many resales they got.

I'm fairly sure ME3 cost more to make than the previous game.

I'm surprised this hasn't gotten more attention...

April 16: Electronic Arts dismisses rumors of layoffs.

May 7: EA files Form-8K, "initiat[ing] a plan of restructuring (the "Plan") to align the Company's cost structure with its ongoing digital transformation. Under the Plan, EA anticipates reducing its workforce and incurring other costs. EA expects the majority of these actions to be completed by September 30, 2012."

This is a great accomplishment for EA in a moment when the economic crisis is finally reaching the video game industry (Nintendo closed the year on the red for the first time in three decades).

If BioWare fails to deliver on the EC for ME3, the real effect from all this won't be seen until the next big BioWare game. Let's see if the company has truly learned it's lessons when DA3 is released. We'll also be able to see if EA is meddling with BioWare's game develpment by forcing release dates to make their bean counters happy.

Nintendo's problems come from plummeting Wii hardware/software sales, DS drop and very slow 3DS start though

EA is unleveraged. It has no LTD. It's balance sheet is pretty clean at this point. Except for the hundreds of millions in goodwill paid for Bioware. Funny that they'd use a loss in Q1 to trigger layoffs. EA always loses money in Q1, there's lots of seasonality in their income statements.

Their profit is being driven by "margin expansion" lead by Digital. Ie people are paying for stuff that it costs them nothing to make and sell. That means buying in-game currency in Free to Play games, spectre packs and the like.

What I'm getting from their presentation is they're investing in Mobile, Social Gaming, Casual. They want to extend their "Industry Leading" Portfolio of brands into the casual and mobile sphere. Although I'd argue that outside of EA Sports, most of their brands are number 2 in each category.

Well that has more to their lackluster sales for the 3DS and basically abandoning the Wii in preperation for the Wii U.  In the case of the Wii U, they are now selling the hardware for below the manufacturing cost in the hopes of generating game sales.  Unfortunately, those have never really picked up.

Hadn't heard that.  To my knowledge there haven't been any major layoffs at EA yet, but it does seem I am behind on this story, so who knows.

They're expecting $23 million in "severance and other employee-related costs". That's a...significant number of layoffs in the near future.

I doubt anyone ever really believed them dismissing the rumours, the only surprise is they only waited a few weeks before letting the world know they were full of crap. Most companies give it a few months.

I'll also assume they've made a great deal from ME3 multiplayer. Perhaps not millions, but all those spectre packs people use real money to buy should be adding up to something.

Wasn't that much of a surprise given how things have been handled lately.

But people were running around here on this very forums screaming at the top of their lungs how ME3 failed, and how it's a commercial failure, and how it'd barely sold any copies at all!

Who am I supposed to believe? This shatters my whole worldview! On the one hand, there's actual verifiable facts released by EA themselves, but on the other hand, some guy on the internet SAID it! And you know how that means it's completely accurate!

Oh no, the world's gone mad, MAD I TELL YOU!
