So, after losing the legacy boards it seems we're going to lose the Vault as well. What's next, the Internet? Seriously.

To be honest I'm too busy salvaging Morrowind mods from PES (saved some 20GB, soon I'll be moving onto NwN) , so I was just wondering has anyone did anything about the content that's hosted on Nwvault ? I dont have Unix/Cygwin at the moment so I can't use Wget to download the entire website. And I can't even start to imagine the ammount of other data that'll be lost - gamesites.ign.com (scroll down)

Lujone

As far as I know, Fileplanet and the Vault are two different entities within IGN. I haven't seen anything about shutting down the Vault.

I'm pretty sure AD is right. Planet Neverwinter was indeed a different IGN site. It was part of the FilePlanet hub.
http://www.fileplanet.com/

I used to loot Planet Neverwinter for scripts back in the day. They had a beautifully organized script archive back then. I'm not even sure it's still around. I did a search for it and the Planet Neverwinter pages seem to have quietly slipped away already. All the vault links to Planet Neverwinter are redirecting to the vault network.

I wish I'd known I would have tried to preserve some of those cool old scripts.

Some of the old community sites seem to have survived. Planet Elder Scrolls and Planet Fallout are still around, but it look like they've been migrated to Gamespy's domain.

EDIT:
Yup. I found several old links to Planet Neverwinter. The old domain, http://www.planetneverwinter.com/, is being permanently redirected to http://nwvault.ign.com/.

Usually when game resource sites like fileplanet are aquired by a conglomerate of game resource sites, like IGN, the goal is to debrand the site to make it less appealing, migrate the intellectual (files) and physical (employees) to a branded site they promote, and as the user base dwindles, stop maintaining it, let it choke out most of it's users, and then delete it, redirecting to their branded site.

Ok a friend told me that the NWN vault doesn't use fileplanet to host its files. Can anyone confirm this?

Regardless, Fileplanet *is* going down, wonder what will that entail.

Yes, that's what I'm talking about.[/quote]

Ok scrap that. It seems there is reason to worry after all. I asked DarkOne about this (the guy who opened a Nexus site for NWN/NWN2). This was his response. PS It also explains the questions raised in this thread here - Is anyone paing attention at the vault? by HSeldon - http://social.biowar.../index/11936333

As far as I'm aware the Vault sites (NWN included) are going to experience a similar fate as PES. While not directly tied to File Planet as such (though I can imagine the background hardware is actually one and the same between the Vault and Planet sites), the technical staff are definitely one and the same. So the owners, the programmers, server technicians and engineers are not working on either the Planet or Vault sites. Case in point, the Vault site password retrieval system hasn't worked for months now and won't be fixed. So any old, returning members cannot retrieve their user info. It's the reason why folks from the NWN community reached out and asked if I'd setup a NWN Nexus for them; because they wanted somewhere to archive their files for when the inevitable happens.

<waffling...>

Luj1: Interesting response.

From my own talks with Maximus, IGN isn't planning to let slip the Vault anytime soon. They are also, however, not going to invest heavily in it either. Hence the email system degradation (which is the problem with the password reset malfunction and really really annoys me).

However, Maximus and I are both quite friendly (if busy) and I, at least, would be more than happy to reset whichever returning member needs to reconnect.

As far as paying attention, well, heh. I check it on the days I have unblocked internet access (5 days a week) several times a day. I check *these* forums pretty much every day.

I value the Nexus, and encourage as much redundancy as people are willing to attempt. We've simply lost too much fantastic content over the years to risk losing more. I myself have some 50 gigs of NwN1 downloads from the vault, but would love to have a full archive backup. Like Knight_shield, I'm interested in a nice (low impact?) automated way to crawl the Vault archives and save them.

Hmmm, and this is a great place to say I help out at the Vault - I have not taken Beyond the Pale's position and don't have direct access to all that secret-stash goodness.

Doesn't mean I don't want it, though ;-)

You'd need to write a script with Wget. If you dont have an Unix based OS (If you have Windows) you'll need Cygwin or something like that.

I have around 25 gig worth of NWN stuff stashed away from the vault. Mostly from going through and deciding what I wanted to use in my own PW I am making. I can store more as well, so if I needed to I could upload it to another site later.

I'm very happy to hear that someone is preserving so much of the content from the vault. I'm a windows user (gods help me) so I'm having trouble getting a Wget program to work on my NWN PC.

*sigh*

So, for clarity...

Is the nwvault.ign.com going to be "going out" or not?

I haven't been able to log in and modify stuff for quite some times...

Indeed my password is locked & I can't get it to reset either...

If anyone has a DEFINITE answer on what's going on, please post it, thanks..

<very firmly...>

_Guile: If you need your password reset, PM me your Vault username and I'll reset it. (edit: have you any idea how many "guile" names are on the Vault :-P )

IRT the Vault fading away any time soon, doubtful.

There is still a lot of traffic on the site and IGN would want to move that traffic to another portion of *their* IP, not lose it completely. When they start to lure NwN1 & NwN2 users to a different IGN site, that's when we should *really* worry.

What's DEFINITELY going on is our community is once (ok two or three times) burned and twice shy. We are cynical and just *waiting* to say "I *knew* it! Arrgggggg!".

Heh.

Admittedly, IGN isn't going to confide their deepest <darkest> plans to a mere site-admin-volunteer, but there also aren't any "symptoms" of abandoning the Vault, from an admin standpoint.

Still, I want my own copy of everything :-) 'Cuz I'm crazy like that. :-P

My archive of the English Modules section for NWN2 is 27.6 GB, and that section has 17 pages of content. The NWN1 English module section has 232 pages of content, so I expect the storage would be quite larger, even factoring in a smaller size for NWN1 modules compared to NWN2. You would need to make an estimate of the average module sizes for NWN1 modules, and then you can estimate the necessary storage space for the NWN1 English module section.

The Hall of Fame module section has only 24 pages of content.

Then of course there are all the other file sections, but I considered the module sections, along with their required hakpacks, to be the highest priority. Also, be sure to save a copy of the file's description web page, since many modules don't include a readme file with the same information.

I'll bite, is there any way for a more efficient method for getting all the data? Can we use a contact at IGN to do this for us? I can supply a drive. I'm also in Berkeley, so I could physically get over to the SF office if it would help. Of course, the physical machines could be in another country...

You might need to specify what kinds of files to download. File types like zip, rar, 7z, and others. Also, sometimes there are split files, which have other extensions, like part1, part2, etc., or r01, r02.

Also, some authors put up uncompressed files, including 2da, mod, and others, as well as documentation in the form of txt, pdf, doc, rtf, and more.
