I just started playing ME2 and I have NO idea how to build my solier and why I should spend points in the different areas. Can I have some guidance? Thanks anyone who helps.

There are plenty of guides (just look at the sticky social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/261/index/2749272 ) here on the forum, so just take a pick ; )
But that thread doesn't contain all Soldier guides, like the Claymore Soldier social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/261/index/8090191 thread, which you should take a look at, fun stuff : )

Another one is here on the wiki. My short version: you get the full range of weapons apart from submachine guns, so you can shoot anything with nearly anything, but you have no tech or biotic powers (unless you choose one as a bonus poewr) so you need to pick appropriate squadmates to come with you on each mission to deal with what you're up against. Though that probably doesn't tell you anything you don't already know.

Adrenaline Rush, max to Hardened.
Combat Mastery, max to Shock Trooper
Incendiary Ammo, max to Inferno.
Probably the easiest way to get started your first time through.
