The Mass Effect trilogy has been butchered enough already. Damage control time. Rather than going for ME4 they should simply focus on the Extended Cut and that's that - give closure for everyone and explain what the hell happens if Shepard survives.

ME 3 was the end of the Shepard arc, not Mass Effect

Its already been confirmed that its not the end by Bioware hasn't it

I look forward to the Call Of Duty type and style of gameplay. And finally the next installment will have a feature that allows the game to play itself isn't that awesome. B)

Unlikely. They've intended 3 to be the final game in the series for quite a long time.

Prequels are not out of the question, though. In fact, I'm pretty sure that, if it hasn't begun already, they will have started development of a prequel game. Shanxi? Krogran Rebellions? Turian Unification War? No way to tell. But I would bet any amount of money on a prequel being released in the not too distant future.

Well. They've said that ME3 is the last game in Shepards story. Not the last game in the Mass Effect universe.
And if ME3 sells as good as that article claims then I would be surpised if EA doesn't tell BioWare to start planning on another Mass Effect game asap! (that doesn't involve Shepard or his/her crew).

Sadly it will most likely be a prequel considering that ME3 doesn't have a canon ending (accordning to Bioware). And if they want ME4 to be set after the events of ME3 they have to choose a canon ending.
And that will just start another sh*tstorm Image IPB

I guess they could say that ME4 takes place tens of thousands of years after ME3 and no one longer remember which color Shepard picked.
(Though I think it would be hard to ignore the effects of synthesis even if one million years have passed)

1st of all, I want to thank Hitman for posting the article with actual sales figures.  The benefit of quantifiable numbers means we can compare ME3 with some other games.

HITMAN629 wrote...

With sales like this. Of course they are going to make more.

ME3 sales pass USD200 mil, with 1.3 mil units sold just in the U.S.  It's been 2 months since release.

However, I'm afraid I disagree with the conclusion that this was such a success they'll make more.

I don't mean to contradict, but those sales numbers sound really small for the industry now:

- Gears of War 3, a 3rd person shooter ONLY on the Xbox, sold 3 mil (so no PC sales, no PS3 sales)

- Call of Duty games can sell 12 to 13 mil, so ME3 is like only 10% of one of those games

- What of ME2?  2 mil units, but just in the FIRST WEEK.  ME3 is 1.3 after TWO MONTHS?  WTF?

Now, the article just says it's 1.3 in the U.S alone.  A very rough rule of thumb is U.S. represents roughly 40% of the market, Japan is roughly another 40%, the rest of world roughly another 20%.  Let's say we use that ratio and project 1.3 mil in the U.S. means a little over 3 mil worldwide (which is generous considering IMHO ME3 is catered much more to a Western audience than, say, the massive Japanese market).

ME3, as I recall, received a lot of hype.  Highlighted in the VGA awards on mainstream media, huge cast of Hollywood stars to draw a look-in audience, and still only 1.3 mil in the U.S.?  I hope the article made a mistake (I think 1.3 mil sounds like the number of SW:TOR subscribers, a 1 mil+ figure sounds right for that).  If not, BW really needs to get the EC right and do another huge wave of marketing when it comes out.

EDIT - sorry I didn't respond to OP's question initially, I was so surprised by ME3's comparative low sales (even in relation to ME2) if these numbers are correct.  My thought is this.

Previously I was sure there would be more titles, because EA maximizes the value of the franchises they acquire.  Now, looking at these disappointing figures (IMHO, EA scrutinizes these far more than even me), I'm not sure if that's a sure bet anymore.

Worse yet, they may not be triple A titles like we're used to.  EA might just use the ME IP in some low budget things.  Example - the ME: Deception novel, which I heard was just a sloppy work riding on top of the ME name.  As we can see, they're already doing things like this, and if the sales figures are as low as the article says, EA would rather invest more in their many other projects and just milk ME on minimal effort projects.

Mass Effect is a franchise for EA, and if EA has anything to do with it they'll most definitely be more ME games. I hope that the next game will focus less on the Gears of War shooting mechanic and focus more on the RPG and exploration that made the first game epic. Bringing back the vehicle sections and throwing away the planet scanning would be a good start I think.

They will make one. Just one. And it will fail, then the franchise will be dead.

If the Extended Cut and any subsequent dlc is a success, then I think EA will order the creation of a new series of Mass Effect games, it's what they do. If the Extended Cut is pure patronising crap that infuriates everyone and kicks off another ****storm giving the franchise has minimal returns then I think EA will avoid it like a Plague Rat with an nuke gaffa-taped to its back.

Possibly. EA pushed back an unnamed "big game" from 2013 to 2014 and wouldn't say what it was.

I'm sure they will.

Prequels are hard to pull off imo, especially with the type of ending ME3 has and they would have to establish canon to go post-ME3.

I'm not sure what they will do, but I would bet quite a bit they continue the franchise in some form. I could see Mass Effect 4 being a launch game for the next gen consoles in late 2013 or 2014 whenever they're coming out.

Next gen consoles oughta be better equipped to handle the MMO genre, so that is what I would guess. Especially since MMOs are so easy to DRM.

If they do I hope it will be a clean slate. A new Hero, companions, motivations, enemies etc...
No more Shepard and Co. I do have a sinking feeling if there is another one it will end up like SWTOR though.

Probably, but I really hope they don't. Just be done with it now and introduce a new IP (preferably one without magic blue space lesbians).

Or stick with it, but go back to the quality and frequency of squadmate interactions we had in KoTOR and DAO.

Edit: I would love a Mass Effect Sims, though. Something similar to the Sims Medieval, maybe, or not. I just know I'm a sucker for everything Sims.

In my opinion if I was EA I'd have told Hudson to do 2 things with ME3:

1 - Don't screw it up

2 - End ME3 so we can have a ME4 and MOAR monies!

But it seems they didn't...

Yeah, I would have told them pretty much the same.  More because I *want* more adventrures with my Shepard and crew than just business.   I knew it was the last game for Shepard, doesn't mean I couldn't hope for more.

As long as it's not an MMO, I'd be down. Cannot stand that genre.

Prequels usuall suck.  I do think they could weave the RBG together enough (green would be the hardest) depending how(if) they explain them in the EC.

There is room for more big-damn-heros in Shepard's timeline, but really, Shepard is the biggest damn hero of them all so a "side-quel" would just dimish Shepard.

Yeah, I'd rather ME4 be distant future than a prequel or side-quel.

Doesn't matter, the franchise is so thoroughly trashed that a new game would be ME in name only or a prequel (yuk). Then there is the whole ill will thing some of us have for EA/BW...

I'm sure EA was probably going to push for another ME, which is why BW did their best to just torch it and let the series burn, but forgot about their fans that have basically blacklisted BW unless EC does something right.

Don't know if a prequel would work. Look at SW new trilogy.

I really can't think about a prequel that worked. Halo Reach was a good game, but not even giving the spartans names and faces compensate the lack of Master Chief, Cortana and Johnson. In movies, just X-Men First class that was better than the other movies, partially because it contradicts them pretty much.

Their only option would be sequel, but after that cluster**** ending? Only if sequel is thousands years after ME3.

You gotta milk the wounded cow before you put it out of it's misery :P

They'll make another game, but it'll be sure to very easy to grasp and not very difficult. Dialogue choices will be replaced by massive explosions, more than likely.
