Alternatively they've heard of the Doctor and decided to set up shop there so their largest concentration of forces would be in the place where the TARDIS would be liable to pop up again.

I think this makes an awful lot of sense. Does that make Reapers proto-Daleks? Distant cousins perhaps?

Something big is happening in London, something so big that the Reapers knew we were coming for the conduit, knew that they wanted to go get the Citadel which they took in no time at all when they actually tried, and decided to make it easy for us to reach the conduit and not just let Harbinger kill us, just to be nice.

Artistic.

In response to OP - it was talked a bit some time ago, I even made a thread back then about this, go take a look -  http://social.biowar.../index/10663894

Great post and thread, thanks for the link! I liked the point about how the "main gate" to the Citadel is wide open, and not terribly well defended when you think about it.

But that's just it. Why the freak out with moving the Citadel to Earth? Why keep the arms closed? They're obviously afraid of the Crucible at first, yet the Crucible seems to be just what they want when it eventually does dock.

The entire exercise is contradicted when the Catalyst invites Shep up for a "little chat". Yet another plot hole I guess?

Anderson after they find Harbinger's comm channel after Arrival: "Hey, Harbinger, did you know I was born in London you scum sucking squid faced imbecile? *makes fart noises down the comm for 6 months*"

That's why they hit London.

This comes up every few weeks , London is a nod to War of the Worlds ... the entire invasion is a "homage" to this particular scifi setting.

Makes sense, the Martians in The War of the Worlds were incredibly stupid and manufactured their own downfall. Much like the Reapers in ME3.
Although at least H.G. Wells knew what epilogues were.

Why Earth? : Thats where the reapers will be harvesting the humans. Simple
Why London? : Why not? Iconic backdrop, ties in with promotion, big ben etc.
Why the beam?: To send the humans to the citadel.

As for how it the Citadel got there, I always imagined that TIM moved it.

But why humans?

The answer is subtextual.

The codex entries on the Reapers indicate they're particularly picky about which species, and specifically what members of each species, are used for processing into Reaper capital ships. Given the exposition, it's based upon genetics though there may be other factors. Species and individuals who aren't suitable, regardless of reason, are husked, used as indoctrinated sleeper agents, a menial labor force, or processed into destroyers.

Humans, for their large population and wide genetic variance (as exposited in ME2), are a strong candidate for being processed into a capital ship. Given they're "next door" to the batarians and for their comparative lack of military, industrial, economic, and political strength compared to the other Citadel races and therefore easier to pacify, it's only logical to eat the humans first, make the capital ship(s) and proceed with the rest of the extinction.
