Samantha should be the new Shadow Broker. Not Liara.

Given how Liara explains damn near nothing, we should have had the option to bench her in the Crucible for War Assets.

This, Liara practically screams "assign me to the Crucible!" but we're unable to.

Heck Wrex should/could have been the shadow broker, he has contacts in a top secret STG base, figures out the alliance is building the crucible and could probably take down the SB without resorting to aton of mercs if shepard didn't help.

T.I.M or anyone from Cerberus would be a better shadow broker than Liara.

The only reason I dislike Liara is due to ME3 more or less forcing her on us. Samantha Traynor was a bit more... complex. The fault I find with her is that she's taken Kelly's place, to do EDI's work. I do like her however, for having a good voice actor and bringing some diversity to the ship - like STEEEEEEEVEEEEE.

This, seconded. I can't think of any time past Mars where she would be completley necessary.

Actually, scrap that. She's KIND of necessary for the Eden Prime DLC mission, without a huge dialogue change. Unless you just get her reporting on the data from the Crucible.

And seriously, to who was that NOT a massive spoiler for the fact that she couldn't die in ME3? It's not like they could just make the DLC unavaliable because of the sequence breaking after her possible death.

I waited until after the Citadel mission so I could bring Kaiden and EDI and then the screen came up with Liara as a compulsory squaddie.

Me: Necessary squaddie in a commercial DLC that can be completed at any time? Yeahhh... I'm not gonna get to get rid of her in this game, am I.

That bothered me too. I mean, I can understand how ME2 had certain loyalty missions centered around certain charactes, but ME3 in generally railroads you with compulsary squaddies everywhere you go. What if I don't WANT Liara on this mission because I would rather use someone else and felt she was better served helping out on the Crucible?

Too bad.

Again, I'm not anti-Liara. Just more like "anit-in-your-face-Liara".

No. Poor writing would be making the shadow broker find everything, leaving traynor with next to zero lines.

The shadow broker already provides you with information about every mission, important individuals and finds the central goal in the crucible.

Stop nit picking. Its better to have traynor be relevant rather than have Liara do everything.

Edit: add my shepard to the list of those who like Liara on top B)

I get that but as the SB I expected Liara to intel that was more useful. her big find was the crucible and its purpose which as someone mention before she probably could have done with just her prothean studies alone.

The info that stems from every mission from just a quick look over, I admit i didnt read through them throughly, are just intercepted emails that I felt didnt really do much for me. but then again if Liara does it all what does Traynor do? Poor writing because  they added a character and then realized they had nothing for her to do. Although I will say it was a stroke of genius making her title comm specialist, because all her big finds if im not mistaken were based of communication intercepts and working magic on those, That lets her shine as a comm specialist and Liara can still be a good SB by getting random obscure data that no one would know otherwise.

If you get it then you understand why they couldn't have Liara do even more to drive the plot forwards. People complain as is that she is overbearing on the story compared to the other squadmates.

Then again people will complain over anything. Liara was my love interest and so I wouldn't care if they made her the go to source for everything. Traynor and her chess can go kick rocks.

Edit: actually i agree with your post =]

Don't get me wrong, I like her character, but I always wondered why I have the damn Shadow Broker on my ship if I have to find out about everything by myself.
I mean, she is of use in ME1-2, but 3? I can't remember she did anything useful...

Because it would be boring if the game relied on the shadow broker for everything.

She already found the crucible and gives intel throughout the game. but no complain more

Liara is an amazing character! My personal favourite.

That said I do think it was a bit weird that BW just completely ignored her being the Shadow Broker... seemed a bit negated in the end with all her contacts dying and her spending so many resources purely focused on the reapers. Liara, remember, is focused purely on researching the crucible for 90% of the game whereas Traynor simply analyses information she is given/finds in the system.

I don't actually like Traynor very much and I disagree that 1) She'd be better and 2) That Liara is pointless at all.
Though I think Traynor is much much better than Kelly...

Liara is too busy trying to find millions of way to get into Shepards pant that she completely forgot that she has the resource and knowledge of the whole galaxy.

Kelly was there to monitor the squad moral. Traynor has an actual job.

Wasn't Hacket the one who got you to Mars? I can't remember any intel she gave me...

It's just that she is the source for information about everyone and everything and she is of no use... not a single time where she said "Look, I have something about that in my databases"

Traynor is more essential than her...

Actually a non romanced Liara finds the notion of shepard being nice to her to get in her pants upsetting.

Hackett sends you to mars to meet up with Liara and discuss her findings. Liara propositions the crucible after mars. She actually has to convince shepard to give it a chance. Also glitch her AI gives notices about information all game long.

Liara is the reason shepard didnt rot away after Me2. Liara is the reason shepard was able to comprehend the prothean beacon in ME1. Liara is the reason we find the crucible in ME3.

The devs have to leave something for other crew personnel to do right?

If they wanted Liara to be Shadow Broker, then she should have spent some time BEING the broker in ME3.

Even if only for the first act, and you had to rescue her before Cerberus takes her out or something, THEN she can't access her resources afterwards.

Most of her resources were destroyed by Cerberus/the Reapers. Many many contacts have been killed.

Also the fact that there are a large number of hints that she is gathering resources such as mercs/eezo/weapons etc etc etc.

Tie this in with building/researching the crucible, fighting with Shepard on their missions, researching the missions and all the many structural-narrative reasons why she doesn't do more... I don't think she forgot that fact.

People are often too blinded with dislike for Liara they forget to see what she actually does.

Ok, I have only skimmed through the posts and this may have already been explained somewhere else but... Why didn't Miranda just tell you where th base was? She was there in the beginning of ME2 and the base hadn't moved since then because of the dying star always being there.:?

Maybe it was another dying star...

... Also Miranda "hides" from Cerberus by wearing a Cerberus uniform everywhere she goes. She's not the brightest scientist in the series, I guess.

I find it funny people think this is an anti-Liara thread, though. I LIKE Liara. I'm just shocked her title as Shadow Broker is nearly meaningless.

I mean, I get that Bioware wanted other people to do stuff, but Liara looks insanely incompetent. Is there even a single, solitary twist in the game, any mission, that she saw coming? She spent the entire game basically in the dark and never saw a single important mission coming her way.

Yeah the Shadow Broker network just isn't as powerful as it was in previous games. Its almost as if the very heart of the organization was destroyed in some sort of violent and semi-unplanned takeover, which was assisted by an organization that then proceeds to destroy the main base of operations. Its a good thing that there isn't some sort of galactic war effort that Liara is assisting with logistically or she may have her work cut out for her.

Liara as Shadow Broker should have had an immensely large impact on the story.
