Kinda makes me feel irrelevant as a fan, I think I'm just going to give up all together. If they have all the money they need, why should they care about fan feedback?

Oh well, nice knowing you all, probably going to not bother with BSN anymore, if the game is a winner for EA, there's no point pressuring them to make changes or do anything to please fans.

You mean they don't need to make Extended Cut at all, but they're doing it anyway? And they don't care about our feedback?

Do you even see the contradiction? <_<

I won't argue the orginal post was a bit... mellodramatic.
How-EVAH! :)

I've posted this before in the last month or so.  I'll break it down again.

  • Bioware is a niche gaming company.  Their audience is mainly geared towards the early twenties to mid thirty year old crew who enjoy a great story.
  • Bioware found its place in a very competitive market by creating more market share.  They didn't really much of the existing market share.  Their major breakthrough was Neverwinter nights.  Not so much for the game itself, but the Aurora toolset.  DnD players now had the tools to make their dungeons come to life with a little C script and hak packs from the community.  This is not really the Call of Duty crowd...
  • Bioware gets acquired by EA.  If you haven't noticed it, Mass Effect has undergone some obvious and some subtle changes over the three iterations.
  • The first game was heavy RPG, Heavy Story, Large scope
  • The second game evolved into a shooter with heavy character development, but small scope.
  • The third game evolved into gears of war with the ME storyline and a plethora of characters needing closure.  Priority went to Chobot (to acquire a new fan base if possible... I mean, hey!  She licked something... and she has boobs!) and to multiplayer.  Next thing you know, they'll find a way to bring Nascar and deep fried twinkies into the franchise....  Move development OFF of the story and put it on frivolus things to tap into a different market than the current target audience.
This is basically where we are at.  Bioware is targeting the larger, less "cultured" mass of people who play online shooters for the sake of playing online shooters.  They are slowly moving Bioware into this realm because it is easier to keep that group of people entertained with a bunch of small efforts like making new maps, weapons and conditions for winning rather than writing more epic stories.  Someone spends 10 minutes making a weapon and EA pulls in a few million in sales.

---------------------

Back to the point... :)

Bioware is only releasing extended content for a high-risk PR move.  They haven't attracted the larger market to their brand yet - which means they still need their old fan base throwing money at them, but they need some kind of carrot to get the new fan base over to replace the old to, in short, maximize profits and lower the risk on investment by targetting the mainstream.

The extended content has abo****ely NOTHING to do with them "caring" as most normal people define "Caring".  This is all a strategic transition that didn't go as smoothly as they were hoping.

And if you don't believe me... look at a game company called Bungie.
Look at their old games and then look at them after Halo.

Marathon, Oni, Myth (all different and awesome)
Then Halo came out.... and that's all they do.

Hedge fund economics 101.
Find the lowest common denominator customer, take a product, dumb it down and rehash it over and over and over and then dump the old and aqcuire the new.

All of this tells me that they should have also brought that Snooki beast from jersy shore into ME3 as a love interest.  Vega needed some "COME AT BE BRO!" lines and the transition would have been complete.

Nice +1

I agree...nice 1+2+2+1 Image IPB

All this talk about 200 mil in sales.....this only proves that BioWare got us...and got us good. They took full advantage of our trust and made a handsome profit. I'm not sure how well this is going to work for them in future however. I know I for one, will be far more cautious when it comes to BioWare. I certianly won't be pre-ordering any of their games or buying some trumped up CE or even running out on release day to buy it.

And I'd be willing to bet that those "casual" fans of ME3 have played once or twice and moved on already, hell they may have already traded their game in or sold it outright to some secondhand place for the cash/in-store credit to finance their next game purchase.

Consumers are entitled, as they should be.

bullcrap, you get what you pay for, nothing more.

And we paid for a game that would conclude the series in a way that our choices mattered. Which we didn't so we're entitled to voice our complain, demand a better ending like we were promised or take our business elsewhere.

Not everyone enjoys being taken in the rear by companies, you know?

Apparently you didn't pay attention to Tuchanka or Rannoch.  I also like how you claim anybody that doesn't feel over entitled or is satisfied with the game as "taking it in the rear"

Apparently you didn't pay attention to "conclude the series in a way our choices matter". And two good parts do not a game make.

Two parts that probably consisted of most of the game and most of the other missions were pretty good as well.  Sorry but I don't let the last 5 minutes of a game ruin the awesome 40 hour experience for me.

Most of the game? Lol no.

Well no.

Some people use it as an offensive term for people who worship the very ground BioWare place their metaphorical feet upon.

Fanboys, basically. Are you a fanboy?

McDonalds is one of the most profitable "resturants" despite the fact that the food is actually really ****. Profit has very little to do with quality and everything to do with advertising and smart business practices.

Don't get me wrong, I am glad to hear this news, I imagine the EC would not be possible without it, but don't think it has anything to do with the quality of the game.

It doesn't, so feel free to ignore the question. That was pretty defensive though, I may have suspicions.

I'd like to see pre-controversy versus post-controversy sales figures.

Here's what I have seen (I haven't done extensive research on these prices; I spent about 5 minutes clicking between sites): in the last week I've received emails from three different retailers trumpeting a $20.00 discount on ME3. They're selling the game for $39.99 versus the original $59.99. The game was released two months ago.

Skyrim was released on 11/11/2011. It's still selling for $59.99 new at many retailers. I've found it for $49.99 on Amazon; most prices range between $55-59 new. To emphasize, Skyrim was released about two weeks before Thanksgiving last year.

So there's that.

The vocal minority needs to stop shoving their self-entitlement and hate in our faces. Mass Effect 3 was a good game, not 10/10 but it still provided me with several hours of entertainment. I get the feeling the people who still rage about the ending and cry betrayal have never been in a relationship because I can assure you, I've seen people in 5 year relationships get dumped and still brush it off better than you lot.

There was controversy with this game for months before it launched.  People were complaining about the ending when there was a leaked script or they found out there was Day 1 DLC.

I bought Skyrim for $30 about a month after its launch and it was just because of excess stock so the price went back up after those copies were sold and I have seen a similar effect with Mass Effect 3, for multiple retailers in my area are selling Mass Effect 3 at $60.

It is clear to me that people still do not understand that you sell your product based on the success of the last product.

It is equally clear to me that we can't even disagree agreeably but instead resort to pages of ad hominem attacks because we don't agree with each other.

Also, 200 million is a lot for us.  We are just peon wage earners.  Is it a lot for a multi billion dollar company in the time frame it took to get 200 million?  If I make 5 dollars an hour I'm doing great compared to some poor fella in the backwoods of Ecuador who makes 1 dollar a day, but I'm not considered a vast success in a first world nation.

Take the 200mil with a grain of salt.

The highest grossing movies' opening weekend are based on the quality of the previous installment.

case in point:
Spider-Man 2 $88 million Spider-Man 3 $151 million
X-men 2 $85 million X-men 3 $102 million
Austin Powers 2 $54 million Austin Powers 3 $73 million

and in contrast
Planet of the Apes 2001 $68 million - Rise of the Planet of the Apes $54 million
Wolverine Origins - $85 million - X-Men first class - $54 million
Shrek 3rd $121 million - Shrek 4 $71

This. The purchasing cycle of their customers is not short, it is long, because game production times are long. If they pumped out Mass Effect 4 three months after ME3, we would be seeing if there was a strong impact to their decisions right now, but because they already have the money from purchases of both satisfied and dissatisfied customers, the number doesn't provide us as many clues as some might thing.

As I stated before, future sales are where the impact would be. Did they lose core customers? Can they recover those core customers in the future? How much do they have to spend gaining new customers? These questions will see answers in the future; you can't draw conclusions about those kinds of things based on sales figures put out while we're still in the midst of this debacle.

Reptilian Rob wrote...

People need to learn the difference between "sales" and "revenue."

EA is bleeding money right now.

Sales and revenue are actually interchangeable in accounting terms; if you're referring to unit sales vs revenue, then unit sales represent a fraction of revenue. Perhaps what you're thinking about is profit vs sales; if expenses exceed sales (or revenue) then profit becomes loss. EA has posted net losses in each of the last three years, though the loss has gotten progressively smaller each year.

Investors see a pattern with the company, though; EA stock has trended steadily downward over the past three months, closing at $17.87 on February 9th, 2012 and down to $14.12 today, May 9th, 2012. Can this be completely attributed to the ME3 situation? That's not a leap I'm willing to take, but it is undoubtedly a factor; further research would lead to a better perspective, but it would ultimately be subjective, because the market values of stocks are based on subjectivity to begin with. (What are you willing to pay for it?)

Again, we'll see what happens later; the truth is that the financial impact of what is going on right now won't be entirely felt by the company until they release more projects, and consumers react.
