DAO is good, but far from even their best RPG. I'd say it's about in the middle. Not as good as BG2 or KOTOR, but definitely better than NWN and Mass Effect.

In the end, I enjoyed it about as much as BG and JE. Well, JE was actually stronger story wise, but combat wise DAO is better. It's middle-tier Bioware stuff, imo. Still GOTY contender, which says a lot about Bioware and even more about their competition.

You know why I think it's the best ever for me?

Take a situation with 3 possible paths and solutions. Try all 3 of them. 1st neutral, 2nd evil, 3rd good solution. Even having finished the game already and this is not the first time I go thru that episode, chosing the good solution after trying the other two, for movie purpose, still makes my whole body - what's the english for that - shivers (?) in contentment while almost filling my eyes with tears... if that's not a GREAT rpg then I don't know what is.

A huge thank you to all the folks at Bioware.  You have been one of my favorite developers since Baldur's Gate and your RPGs have always been great.  This game, however is not just great, it is EXCEPTIONAL!!  The level of detail and cinematics as well as freedom of taking whatever path you choose through the game give this game extreme replay value.  Not only that, but the many romance options and large selection of companions is incredible.  I have been playing video games since back in the Atari days when I was a little kid and playing this game is one of the first times I have been so completely immersed in a game that I lost track of time repeatedly.
I convinced a friend of mine to try this game by using the words "awesome" and "best RPG EVER" repeatedly.  After he bought it he told me that he was so into playing it that at one point he began having hunger pains because he was so into it that he didn't want to take a break to get something to eat.  I knew exactly what he was talking about (though I always manage a quick run to the microwave when I'm hungry).
I have been playing this game since it came out and continue to find different paths and things that I have missed on the first couple of plays through it.  For me, I will judge all other RPGs from now on against this game.  It is a masterpiece.

Whoopie doo, can I get my 100 hours back? Can I get all the wasted quality time that I should have gotten with my better half? What about those endless weekends and the rantings on Sunday evenings because on monday I need to go to work and couldn't concentrate at work because I'm busy thinking the best way to distribute my incoming level traits. :P

Anyway, Dragon Age really is fun and I'm sober now. I can't wait for the next episode.

Still BG2 for me. But like they say, DAO is up there on the list.

BG2 for me as well, but DAO is awesome. I know I'm sometimes critical of it, but I really do applaud Bioware for making such a great game.

BG2 storywise, and NWN1 for gameplay. DA:O for me sits around in the middle in story and gameplay, but is still up on my favorites list. :)

DA:O has exceeded all my expectations. It's not just one thing that sticks out. The dialog, the lip-synched professional voices, the graphics, the story lines, the quests, the verbal barbs tossed about by the party members while exploring, the combat system, the char creator, the hours upon hours of gameplay, the seamless cutscenes with your char, the hauntingly beautiful music, the "little" unexpected surprises that make you sit up and pay attention to pure game developing genius -- the synergy is overwhelming.

I have played many RPGs over the years, but I haven't played them all. Does anyone remember the Bard's Tale series for the Amiga? Yeah, I'm dating myself with that one. BT had me hooked for some time. Then there was Diablo and Diablo II -- those were great for me during their heyday. I've tried Morrowind, Oblivion, and a few others that were pure trash. I played The Witcher for about one hour before forgetting it. Fallout 3 is a force to be reckoned with. But most of these games are lonely pursuits.

I absolutely hate MMORPGs, or any type of multiplayer game. Hey, that's just my opinion. They are not my cup of tea.

DA:O is hands down the best game I've ever played for its overall immersion factors. That's right -- factors -- plural. DA:O will continue to grow and prosper. I dare say that DA:O 2 will blow our socks off. Until then Bioware will continue to make us happy with occasional DA:O goodies.

(My Dalish Elf Rogue climbs down off the wooden soap box, kicks it to pieces with her Below the Belt nastiness, and then pin cushions the heap with Fire Arrows to warm her hands in the gathering dusk...goodnight, and happy gaming.)

For me out of the Bioware games DAO only rates second starting from last (last being Jade Empire). The game lacks a lot of what makes an RPG game and having played nearly ALL western and eastern RPGs for the past 19 years (started playing RPGs at 10 and now i am almost 30) i cant shake the feeling that DAO is a new franchise to capture the new and young players mostly. Us old dogs with bags of experience can see it as clear as day.

I'm an older dog than you (45), and I'm curious what you think it lacks. I'm not saying it's the best ever, but I find it has almost everything I look for in an RPG, so I'd be interested to hear what you think is missing.

I would second this sentiment, also as a (slighty) older dog at 33.  If anything, the majority of people I see on these forums complaining in every post tend to be younger people.

heh.. I'm 45 too and I can say that from '96 onward I've played them all. I even enjoyed Ultima IX! =)

And while I consider myself lucky for being able to enjoy lots of many different games, only one gave me that feeling I tried to describe above... BG2. But I cannot even think of starting a BG game again... old for old, just me is enough! DA is fresh, modern, toons move the way they should in XXI century and they're so real sometimes I forget they're toons at all... my wife always does and tries to break my pc in some angry jealousy of those girls in DA! Pitty I can't get her into playing it but she's too serious for a "children's hobby" as she calls it. Long live we, the children, for our spirit is blessed!

Final Fantasy 7, KOTOR, Mario 64, Diablo and Mass Effect come to mind before I even start thinking about DA:O as best RPG ever.

To me those games left me with a "WOW" in one way or another, DA:O not so much.

It feels great to read this kind of feedback. Thanks guys!

And know that we will continue to try to support and improve the franchise and these forums are a great way to get ideas on what our fans want and what we need to work on.

After playing DA, I bought Mass effect, although a good game it lacks the depth, polish and immersion of DA.

Mass effect feels somewhat like a prototype for DA, were the makers tried their new ideas out on the public, fortunately for us, Bioware got things right, and have made a game that will give other game developers, pause for thought.

not the best ever for me but, a damn good one for sure.. really enjoyed every minute of it. only thing I would of liked though, would've been an open world. when a game like this creates a world with such a rich history etc I really just wanna go explore every inch of it myself.

Thank the Maker for that.

Oh, sorry, you said that because you liked Baldur's Gate 1 - possibly your favorite CRPG?

Well, if you want to get even, attack VTM: Bloodlines.  That's probably my favorite.

seriously, just kidding here - please don't take offense.

^_^

EDIT - on the age thing, I've been coding games since the Commodore.  Commodore PET, that is (go cassette tape drives!)  And while I never played that game that Garriot did before Ultima, I think I saw most of the first wave way back when.  Temple of Apshai, anyone?  Rogue?

I miss my Commodore 64.

I pretty much agree with the OP. I haven't enjoyed an rpg this much since Ultima VII. And even that I never replayed. In my 4th runthrough on DA:O.

That being said, I do find it interesting the direction these threads seem to take, as personal taste becomes a debate.

Maybe we should argue which is better, chocolate or vanilla ice cream. I imagine the conclusions would be about as concrete and definitive...

What shoots this game up into the stratosphere for me is the fact that in no other game have I ever had  so many strong emotional reactions to the game itself, my character, and other characters within it.  Many of the games that others have listed here are in my 'most awesome & most loved' favourites list, but Dragon Age has sucked me in emotionally in ways no others have. Sure, I've had reactions in others, and 'everlasting memories' of certain moments, but Dragon Age has done that more often than any other. As a person of intense emotional nature, this leaves a deep mark in my psyche.

There's things I love that Dragon Age doesn't have, sure, but it's got many of the things I do love... deep character development of both yourself and party members, involvement in the (very good) story, no 'black and white good and evil' ...and much more. That's what puts this game in the top notch for me. Still, asking me to pick my favourite is like asking a parent which of their kids they love the most... it's just not fair!

After a few weeks of careful thought, I've decided to bestow gaming's most prestigious award on DAO: the Dreogan Seal of Quality. Lufia 2, you've finally lost your crown.

Everything about this game seemed closest to what I hope for in an RPG: Well-defined character personalities, a strong reason for those characters to come together, a clear goal for the characters, a detailed world, the chance to explore that world outside the game, and seriously funny ****.

Even though some would say this game went too far, I'm glad to finally see a fantasy game that doesn't sacrifice the story for censorship. People have brown teeth, they get all messy after chopping off someone's head. The graphics only touch the surface, however: I won't mention the plot decisions that would've been cut in a heartbeat in other games.

I love how magic is handled in this world, even though I hate magic in games. Too many fantasy settings have magic everywhere. This setting places severe limits on who practices magic and where. Magic is mysterious again, and I can actually like it in this setting. My favorite playable character ended up being a mage!

My only issues were with the ending. The "happy" ending was a bit too abrupt for my tastes, but the "sad" ending redefined epic. For anyone pointing this out as a spoiler, I'm sorry-- I've let it slip there's more than one ending. I'll also continue to spoil the ending: the epilogue is a fantastic way to close things.

PS- I also hate dragons, but this game turned me dragon.
PPS-In a scifi setting, yes, I also hate lasers, personable robots, space travel, and "magic technology". I tolerate these in a certain other game that might have some sort of connection with this one only because of the characters.

Quibble: This game isn't exactly black vs. white, but it is black vs. grey. I'd love to see a sequel or expansion focused around a battle of grey vs. grey. Playing a certain portion of the current game in the northwest (as an outsider) came close, but it just ended up being a side story.

Short version: the Darkspawn are a little too black!

I am 16 years old and I attempt to frequent these forums.

This is one of my favourite RPG's ever, alongside BG saga and a few others.

It has characters that I grew to love, it made me feel like I was really inside the game, making morale choices affecting the land in ways I could not comprehend untill the end of the game.

It has brillaint graphics that I think people just take for granted, I mean the way everything looks so real, I don't usually look for graphics in video games much, but this one really caught my attention, and it certainly deserves it.

The entire game, one thought kept going through my head "Ahh the Plot thickens" which is true!

Don't worry I am not putting in an spoilers.

:)

So BioWare, a sincere thank you from a young fan, who does not like reading all the abuse you get from the more self centered population of my age group, I hope it makes you feel better to know you have some young fans that really appreiciate what you are doing, what you have done, and what you are soon going to do (Such as ME2, I Preordered it and I can barely wait, sort of a late Christmas present).

Thank you so much BioWare, I have nothing but respect for you and your associates.
