Old and being JRPG's they may be but Final Fantasy IX and Skies of Arcadia Legends are both pretty damn immersive. Outside of RPG's though, the Metroid Prime Trilogy. Easily. Mainly the first and second though. The third had a bit more action with occasional hand-holding but it still had enough merits to outnumber the bad. Mind you imay be confusing atmosphere with immersion.

Might have been the Witcher 2, but sadly then I came to the Karyan, and the godforsaken Quicktime Event absolutely ruined the immersion and (because I had a not uncommon problem that made it nigh-impossible to fill the bar) almost the entire game for me. (On a side note, whoever thought implementing quicktime events and not even an option to turn them off was a good idea shoule be fired).

So, with that out of the question, it comes down to the Witcher 1, Dragon Age and, curiously, a little text-based hentai game I know........

And I guess VtM: Bloodlines is pretty high as well, though it cant reach Witcher's heights because it is too dated imo.

Well and of course, two of the most immersive games ever are still Halo (the real ones) and the newest Alien vs Predator.
Imo they deserve a mention, even though they are very obviously no RPGs at all.

Out of my head at random ..

Fallout: New Vegas
Dark Cloud 2
Mass Effect 1

Dragon age: Origins is a close one if it wasn't for the odd graphics like the plastic like shine on leather armor.

I find that so interesting. How two different people can have different levels of immersion in certain games.

Besides New Vegas(since I didn't play it), I can say I felt immersed in DAO and Skyrim heavily, but not very much in Dragon Age 2.

Something game developers should think about.

Ahh yes, the ME games.

Very heavily immersed in the first- progressively less in the following two games.

Indeed, although we know that there isn't and there will probably never be a developer out there that will be able to satisfy everyone.
I didn't feel immersed in Skyrim mostly because of the NPCs. I know I'm probably in the minority here, but I felt them to be shallow and lifeless at times. The way they walked and the fact that I didn't find a single one that smiled or something (sounds ridiculous I know :P)

But heck, that's just me. =]

No worries. Its always "just me".

Everyone's different. No game can satisfy everyone- too many variables.

They are rather lifeless, but I still think the world is pretty cool. It did not managed to suck me in as much as Morrowind did.

I started playing Morrowind during the busiest, crappiest exam period in my time at the university. It was the reward for reading proofs all day. It worked almost too well.

It isn't just because Morrowind is an awesome game, it's also because of what was going on at the time, but Morrowind has certainly been the most immersive game for me. The infinity engine games got very close though.

For you maybe. I found myself getting less immersed as I went along.

ME1 was very immersive for me. Loved it.

ME2, not as much. Enjoyed it less than the first game, though I found it to be the better game.

I ended up just getting fed up with ME3. Played it once, started a second, barely got through the beginning and now I never want to look at it ever again.

Didn't feel like my character. Besides the fact that I couldn't import my ONE character's appearance, there was not enough dialogue choice for me to feel that I was defining my character.

Tabletop D&D, hands down, is the most immersive RPG I've ever played.

I found ME1 more immersive but I still think ME2 is much more fun to play.

Kotor, Kotor 2, Mass Effect trilogy, Dragon Age:Origins, Skyrim are possibly the most immersive RPG's I've ever played.
Kotor was my introduction to the world of RPG's so that is my personal favourite.

I am tempted to post a certain the Dude meme......

Anyways, tastes obviously differ. personally though I cant quite understand how you could feel that way.

On another note, I must admit I am surprised with how many people say Skyrim.
Skyrim is undoubtedly one of the best games, and surely the one with the longest singleplayer content, but I didnt find it very immersive, the lack of dialogue, character interaction etc... made sure of that.

Immersive as in I see myself in the world and feel like I can make my choices:
Fallout New Vegas, Jade Empire, and Dragon Age Origins.

Least Immersive:
Mass Effect 3, The Witcher, and any JRPG I tried.

If I start saying "But I would not say that, or this character would not say that" then it gets to be less immersive.

For xbox I would have to say Mass Effect 1, as for me it was my first xbox game, and to go from PS2 to playing Mass Effect when it came out was simply amazing and gripping. Its hard to say what game I find the most immersive for the xbox now though.

For the PC it would have to be SWTOR. I cant really think of any good reason why its better than any other, but it's the game I'm currently addicted to :P

KoTOR - Every time I play I get so into it
FFXIII - Never cared about a story or a cast of characters as much as I did with this game
TESIV Oblivion - It was my first TES game so that might be why I felt so much a part of the world

I went to the Bethesda forums, and you know what? I hate the word "immersion" now.

Everytime someone gripes about something being "breaking immersion" I want to punch a baby in the face.
