This. I hope they dont force us to use orlesian accents, I'm fine with non playable characters having them, but with the protag it could be grating enough to make the game unplayable.

I'm French myself, and I'd rather not. I find the overdone, caricatural (and slightly fake, sometimes) French accent rather annoying. I'd rather have as little accent as possible, tbh.Windninja47 wrote...
I'm not sure if it is for definite but that is definitely a romour. Do you think the playable character will have the French accent? I think it would be cool if he/she did but I can't imagine that the majority of player would like it.
Plus, the inevitable French-bashing that would come from people who don't like the game isn't something I want to see. I have my sensitivities

Edit to add: And why Bioware can't find Quebecois to be Orlesians, as opposed to English people doing French accents, I don't know

Steve Martins "French" accent in his Pink Panther moie must have driven you nuts.

Nah, Steve Martin would never drive me nuts, anyway. Caricature is great, as long as it is presented as such (e.g. Monty Python).Shinian2 wrote...

ETA:
Québécois accent is as far from standard French accent as you can imagine. We actually need subtitles when watching Québécois movies or TV.Brodoteau wrote...

I guess it's just to make things easier , like in Me3 , all alien speak english.
I'm french too , and like in almost every country , we tends to have different accent depending on where we live.Somebody from the north of france hasn't the same accent as somebody from south of france.
I'm pretty sure people in Orlais don't speak French
As for playing an Orlesian hero , I'm not too fond of the idea. Not because of the VA , I thought Isolde in DA:o wasn't so bad ...
I mean i've been to a lot of english lesson , trust me nothing in DA sounds awful.(i remember a woman in her 50's learning english for the first time , she sounds like she was trying to speak japanese). At worst it does sound a bit fake.
But yeah mostly it may be not a really good idea to give our PC a "foreign" accent , Like i think scottish accent is great but i'm not sure i'd like that.

Best arguement for a silent protagonist ever.
Well aside from that having a voice on a player generated character leads to serious conflicts when the player tries to roleplay....
The thought of having a snooty french caricature forced on my PC is awful.

As a Canadian I realize that there is a big difference in accents, like Americans versus English, but a couple of points:
1. To make a big generalization, most English speakers can not tell if the French being spoken is from France or Québec -- so I don't think it would matter much. Nor, I don't think could most English speakers tell if a French accent is from a person who is Québécois or French. I recall lurking on these forums after DAO and reading people saying the Leliana didn't sound "French" enough. Even though the actress is actually French, because people are used to the Pink Panther type outrageous French accents (which we got a lot of in MOA)
So if they used Quebecois, the French accent would be more authentic. I don't think the Orlesians need to be using joual.
2. Bioware is a Canadian company. I like a little CanCon in my video games.
3. Why can't the Orlesians sound like Quebeckers, considering that the dwarves sound like Americans.
But I don't want to get into a discussion on accents. My initial point was more to the lines that I actually wanted to hear different languages being spoken in the game. As it breaks immersion to me that everyone speaks (accented) English with each other (except the dwarves, elves and Qunari who all have their own language).
So if DA3 goes to Orlais, I would like to hear some actual French in the background.
Sorry I screwed up the quoting there. But see above.

If you're playing an Orlasian I guess that's the price you pay. Makes you wonder how people from European countries feel about the English accent in DA2.

Yes but with a silent, we can imagine that the PC doesn't sound like a snooty moron.
Probably depends on the country.

If it sounds unpleasent it sounds unpleasent. Reasons don't really come into it. No one is going to subject themselves to a voice that makes their ears bleed.

I think people's objections have more to do with them not wanting a voiced character at all. It seems to ruin their imagery of what and who THEIR character is. I can see and understand the point, but Bioware has already said the PC will be voiced, so we're just out of luck on that one.

1 and 2 are very good points. Didn't consider them in my French-centric line of thought (shame on me).Brodoteau wrote...

Not so sure about 3, though, since it seems Orlesians=French and Fereldans=English is used as some sort of parallel to the ancient historical antagonism and back and forth invasions dance French and English had for centuries. You know, the whole "enemy brothers" thing.
Made-up French would be even better, like the made-up Spanish / Italian Zevran spoke sometimes. Or even better, they should go with Old French. Still would sound the part, would be clearly very medieval, and would sound like a foreign language to French trained ears, so that we all have this feeling of being "not in Ferelden anymore".But I don't want to get into a discussion on accents. My initial point was more to the lines that I actually wanted to hear different languages being spoken in the game. French isn't a race, it's a nationality, the word you're looking for is xenophobia.Aloren wrote...
