I liked Riordan's and Stroud's accents, whatever the origin is. I also like American and British accents, they all add variety, imo.

Why do people hate french accent so much?
Maybe because it mostly comes out of the mouth of nobles that are morons and full of themselves?

I think the more cartoonish French accents in the game are the result of English actors doing their best Monty Python impression. Case in point: Nicholas Boulton voicing Baron Arlange. But the effect is deliberate.

They generally get actual French actors to voice the characters who aren't supposed to be grating.

Well you are on an English language forum.  England and France have a VERY long history of being at war with each other.   And while many of us Englsh speakers are Yanks, and once counted France as our first ally, events over the last few decades has pretty much caused us to forget the memory of Lafayette.

And, there is a tradition of making fun of the French language, especially in film.  Pepe Le Pew, the Taunting Frenchman in Monty Python are a couple examples used in another thread.  It could just be a sign of the times.  I think different nationalities all have their moments, in different eras.  The Germans have had their moment, at least here in the States.  So have the Irish, Scotts and the Poles.  In the part of the USA I live in, there are a lot with Scandanavian ancestry, which leads to plenty of Sven and Lena jokes.

At least it means we are still paying attention to the French.  Would it be better to be ignored completely?  It is human nature to find humor in everything.  And if the French (or any nation) is on a people's collective mind, there is sure to be a decent share of good-natured ridicule.

I,for one,adore French accents,if not fake. I actually like all accents,but I am not a native English -speaker:P
Actually,I feel the same way about foreigners speaking my language - I love listening to them, and truly, there is no accent that would ever bother me. :)

My PC speaking Orlesian,though...Well,that is inevitable,if she / he is from Orlais.
I liked Sutekh`s idea a lot,however :

Made-up French would be even better, like the made-up Spanish / Italian Zevran spoke sometimes.
Or even better, they should go with Old French. Still would sound the part, would be clearly very medieval, and would sound like a foreign languageto French trained ears, so that we all have this feeling of being "not in Ferelden anymore".

There's a longstanding animosity between England and France, which several English colonies (such as the USA) have adopted.

i think they'll stick with the PC having an english accent,ie, ferelden. Though i wouldn't mind a light french accent in the PC's voice. Kinda depends on the main character's backstory really.

If we can put up with so strongly upper class accents on Hawke, we should be able to put up with French accents.

My god, no. And if so, please get a professional one. I mean a real professional with natural accents.

Because if they have one thing I hate about both DA games...it's the Orlais accents. They all sound fake and annoying. it grated on me playing Mark of the Assassin. Dragon Age has such great VOs...except Orlais.

If those are not fake accents...then god help us all for DA3.

I think Leliana was French-Canadian and her accent wasn't that bad. Mostly because it sounded natural. Most Orlais accents sound pompous and fake...

I can't speak for all of our voice actors, but Duke Prosper was 100% authentically french.

Leliana's voice actor was a Parisian living in the UK.

If he's Orlesian, I completely agree.  The voice needs to match the lore.

In any game design conflict, the lore should always win.

I don't know what it is, maybe I just don't like French accents then.

If the next protagonist is Orlesian (either born or raised there), then I personally would prefer that he or she have a French accent, to keep in line with the lore. I'm American, yet I don't really understand why people hate french accents so much (I grew up in a fairly multicultural environment, so I'm used to hearing all different sorts of accents and languages).

Though just because you're a native speaker, doesn't mean you're using your actual accent.  You're going to deliver what you think your employer wants.  Certainly, I doubt the actor playing Duke Prosper thought that they should try to downplay their accent.

See british people on US TV series, for other examples.

Yea, I would think Bioware would want the accents a little more natural. They seem a little over-the-top to me, IMO.

In that case, I could probably stand a native speaking french person. It just seems like Orlais accents are out of place in the DA universe. Mostly because they seem fake with such great VOs everywhere else.

Just because you were born in Orlais does not automatically mean you will have an Orlasian accent. There are numerous ways to get out of that.
It really does depend on the accent. Jean Reno is one that most people are familiar with and he's not grating at all. Part of the problem in DA2 was that the accent seemed played for laughs, being over the top and exagerated. IF that was not the case, then they need a better VA. PC VA's are of generally higher quality anyway.

Some French voices sound wonderful. The trick is getting voices that don't grate on most people's nerves. It can be done.

I'm not sure if it is for definite but that is definitely a romour. Do you think the playable character will have the French accent? I think it would be cool if he/she did but I can't imagine that the majority of player would like it.

DA2 was set in the Free Marches and the PC was Fereldan.

But I imagine an Orlesian PC would be voiced appropriately.

Prediction: The new PC will not have any sort of French accent because the majority would not stand for it. The PC will have your standard British or Scottish accent.

I loathe when Hollywood films are situated abroad and have American actors speaking with German, Italian, French etc. accents. Some of the extras might be actual natives of the country but they are forced to speak English with their local accent. I'm afraid something similar will happen to the next Dragon Age game if it's set in Orlais.

Richness of accents is fabulous. However, using English accents to create "an ethnic environment" (=a foreign country) is such a cheap choice. I'd rather have my game full of actual spoken French but, unfortunately, that's never going to happen.

Well, I'll keep my hopes up that Orlais is a multicultural hub of Thedas where we'll be able to hear all sorts of accents in addition to the native French one. As far as the PC goes, if voice options are subdued accents like Riordan's and Leliana's were, I can live with it. Generally, I think that the PC should be silent or fairly neutrally voiced. That leaves more room for role-playing.

People, at least Americans, do not dislike French accents because of some vestigial memory of the 100 yrs war.

The problem arises because strongly French accented characters are, most often, snobbish, aristocratic, or just generally jerkoffs. It is far more often used for Duke Prosper and Isolde type characters than for regular people.

French accents are often considered exotic and appealing when the speaker is perceived as a regular person, rather than a snob.
