People, at least Americans, do not dislike French accents because of some vestigial memory of the 100 yrs war.

The problem arises because strongly French accented characters are, most often, snobbish, aristocratic, or just generally jerkoffs. It is far more often used for Duke Prosper and Isolde type characters than for regular people.

French accents are often considered exotic and appealing when the speaker is perceived as a regular person, rather than a snob.

i can just imagine a character saying something like:

orlais... love the middle-class, hate the nobility.
must be the accent, less obnoxious.

Really? That's awesome! I guess he just hammed it up a bit since the character was so flamboyant and eccentric.

Does anyone remember Gladiator? Russell Crowe was repeatedly referred to as "Spaniard" but he had a seriously out of place English accent. It drove me crazy. If the next protagonist is Orlesian, s/he needs to have an appropriate accent (or a good backstory explaining why it's not there - ex. I was born in Orlais, but was adopted by flying dogs from the Andersfels who made cheeses), but hopefully not as over the top as the de Launcet's, which was just silly.

I still maintain, that if we must have anything remotely resembling a French accent, make it Cajun instead.

If it's a voice like Riordan/Stroud's or Duke Prosper's, then I'd be fine with it.

But no Emile Du Launcets or Isoldes.

Only if there's also one-eyed monsters with one eye.

Not to defend Hollywood, but do you know how a second century Spaniard sounds like? I certainly don't ;) On the same note, you have those old war movies where Germans would speak between them. In English (or French, in my case). With a German accent.

Speaking of which, what would be nice would be foreigners (or Dalish / dwarves / kossith) speaking in their own language between them, making it look as though they don't want to be understood by the PC / shemlen / topsider / bas.

Probably not like an Australian, which would explain why Crowe changed the accent.

Moreover, Crowe's character should have been speaking Latin for most of that movie, and the with the emperor being played by Richard Harris, giving them all the same accent made sense.

I gather that was originally the plan with Dragon Age.  They hired a linguist to design all the languages back in 2006 or so.

Sadly, they abandoned that plan, and hardly used any of the linguist's work.

I don't care what accent my character has as long as it sounds natural and the actor is good.

Was Leliana's VA really French? Or was it a fake accent?

If the main character is a Fereldan in Orlais, then I think they need to have a scene where the main character can't communicate with someone. ]
You could even make this an attribute check (cunning?) to see if you can get your message across. Or maybe you would need a particular companion to translate for you. I know running into the Elvish ghost woman in DAO (werewolf lair) made me wonder what would that seen would be like if I had been the Dalish origin.

I also think the scene is DAO where Fenris starts to talk to Arishok is great. I have no idea what he said, but I thought that made him more useful -- so I always made sure to bring Fenris with me when I went to see the Arishok, if for no other reason after awhile than role-playing (why wouldn't Hawke bring along someone who "knew" the Qunari when going to talk to them?)

We need more of these kind of language interactions.

Does this mean that Orlesians will be speaking french? Cause I remember A certain Antivan saying "Maricon" Which is a spanish slur.

There's a longstanding animosity between England and France, which several English colonies (such as the USA) have adopted.

You're reading way too much into it. I really don't think anyone here gives a crap about past "animosities". Seriously. The French accent is just something most don't feel at home with.

So is Stroud/Riordan/Hubert.

I don't mind the french accent per say, it just really depends on the person. This is a no for the PC. Just... no. Please?

Ha! That's how my dad "speaks french" too.  He ordered, I kid you not, "a botelle of watère" in Paris once.  Facepalm.
If we could just avoid that with Orlais, I'd feel better.

I wouldn't mind the new protagonist having an accent like hers, I like how softly spoken she was. I doubt we'd end up with a faux French over the top voice for the pc, it would make everything he/she accomplished seem like a joke or parody lol.

She's not living in France is she ? Parasian but not living in France anymore would be my guess.

Just out of curiosity does anyone know any good French voice actors who can speak good English too ? The younger versions of Jean Reno and Gerard Depardieu for example.

I could listen to him  for 40 hours without going crazy. She's already done some voice work in one of the Prince of Persia games, Warrior Within.

Well, I don't think it's an agressive prejudice but, mainstream attitudes about French culture are passive aggressive and borderline rude.  At least in the US, it seems that way.  Although comments made about the French are done in jest, they still belie a certain distaste.  These attitutes stem from historical events and do have an effect on the present.

As far as voice actors go, I'm sure I'll enjoy whatever Bioware decides to do.  They always pick such great people.  I'm hoping for an Orlesian PC, but if the PC isn't Orlesian, that's fine also.  One of my favorite actresses of all time is Audrey Tautou and it would be amazing to hear her in the game.

I think the American derision for la France has more to do with WWII than the Norman Conquest.  I know my grandparents still retain pretty strong feelings about Germany and Japan.  Even Jimmy Johns claims to have "bread so French, it should be liberated"

I can't speak for other players, but *any* accent will grate on my ears after a while.

There's also the way nasal consonants are pronounced in French. It sounds a little like the voice children adopt when they whine ("It isn't fair! Sally got to sit up front last time!"). At least it does to me. And that may be the reason that male voices don't bother me but female ones do. Female voices don't change pitch, so they sound more childlike. When Leliana talks, I hear whining kids. When Riordan or Stroud talk, the reaction is toatally different, and far more pleasant.

Edit: For what it's worth, I'm sure that American accents invoke unpleasant associations in those who don't hear it every day. Since at least 50% of the people I live and work with are American, I don't hear it myself, but I'm very willing to believe it.
