I think the second Assassins Creed game had a main character with an Italian accent and no body complained. Maybe Rpg fans will react differently though.

I wouldn't mind the main character having an accent.

Thank you, sjpelkessjpeler:OCate is pretty good with accents,I suppose. She pulled a very believable dubliner accent as Veronica Guerin,as far as I could tell.

Vanessa Paradis has a beautiful French accent. If the female protagonist in DAIII had a voice as nice as her I'll be a very happy nerd.

Playing as a character with a french accent would be awesome. I hope our character is from Orlais and isn't just a Ferelden who's in Orlais for some reason.

Hmm on Pax they mentioned if possibe it would include Orlais, Ferelden, Free marches, and i think Nevarra as well.

On a site note they could have someone who's half Orlais and half Fereldan (i know its cliched) I would like my main character to have Fereldan roots but some changes would be nice.

They did.  They showed a map if I recall correctly. Its not going to be set in one place.

She'd cost a bomb to hire, she's really popular in France.

I believe the next protagonist will be an English speaking Ferelden, who fled Ferelden from the Blight and then had to flee Kirkwall from the Mage/Templar hostilities.

Ya know...to tie things together for a smooth transition.

Wait!....I just realized that's Hawke.Image IPB

My own impression is that they indicated that the next game would be primarily in Orlais.
Spreading it out too much might not be a good idea anyway. If they do multiple countries in a single game, they would have to design appropriate architectural styles, environmental music, styles of clothing etc. Of course they don’t have to, but then you wouldn’t have any sense of travel or of cultural differences.
It’s going to be hard enough to do Orlais right. Let’s hope for the best.

Regarding French actors, I think accents are a much bigger issue than whether they use famous names or not.

I'm hoping we go back to having origin stories in DA3, which obviously would complicate things. If I was playing as a Dalish Elf I would want her to have a Welsh (or Irish I supposed, but preferably Welsh) accent, it would be really jarring if she had a French accent. I liked having a voiced PC in DA2, Sarcastic Hawke made me laugh so much, but I dunno if that would work if we went back to having origin stories.

Agreed. Think that the next game will start in Kirkwall with the new MC and s/he will travel to Orlais where the main plot will take place. Orlais is a big part of Thedas and has a lot of different environments to cover. The capital Val Royeaux is supposed to be bigger than Kirkwall and the region overall contains mountains, forests and swamps.

Other parts like Nevarra will maybe be tipped on in DLC's..

And please let the characters have a nice gentle believeble accent that sooths the ears instead of hurts them Image IPB.
One or two outrages accent in case of NPC's just for the fun of it could be nice though..

True, but it would have been nice, and a bit more realistic IMO.

As an English speaker, I would be down with playing an Orlesian who spoke French, or had a french accent. Someone mentioned Jean Reno, that type of voice would be awesome IMO.

I think the accents are particularly important for a number of reasons:

1) Listening to the English language being butchered is funny for a while, but really gets annoying over a longer period of time. The Pink Panther movies are probably right at, or above, the ‘Let the force-de-frappe nuke something’ level.

2) Badly pronounced English is just plainly mentally exhausting after a while, as it is with any language that is being violated and thus requires really paying attention in order to understand it. Not a good idea, not a good idea at all.

3) If the English itself (in terms of vocabulary and grammar etc.) is pretty good, an outrageous accent becomes unbelievable. In general, the better somebody’s command of the English language, the slighter (and the more pleasing) the accent (though it may slip in when tired) .

4) Sometimes you can also tell that a non-French speaker is imitating a French accent (same goes with other languages). Exaggerated sounds, the way sentences are composed, the ‘rhythm’ of the language used etc. betray this. Once you’re aware of it, it gets very annoying and completely destroys any sense of immersion and suspension of disbelief.

An example of a French accent done ‘right’ (slight but still recognisable accent, awesome voice full of character) can be enjoyed here:

(of course, the French version is even more menacing in a coolly civilised understated way… www.youtube.com/watch

I suspect the new PC will hail from Ferelden as the Warden and Hawke.
Maybe it'll become like the prisoner PC for TES series: every major character in DA will be born in the most humble and despised region of Thedas, who knows.

I always enjoy being referred to as "Ugh, filthy Fereldan dog".

Mon Createur! Its Orlais. They speak Orlaisian (French). I say start practicing your French and in another year and a half you'll have no problem picking up on words like; sentir mauvais formage!!

Great link Das Tentakel. This is an example of a french accent done outstanding imho.

As the choise has been made to differentiate different regions in Thedas also with their language I think it is important to do it right. If however this will not be adressed to much (a more overall same language for most NPC's) difference in clothingstyle, hairstyle, armors in regions etc. could be used more to see where they come from. In DA2 people mostly looked the same no matter where they came from.

Why do people hate french accents so much?

Well you are on an English language forum.  England and France have a VERY long history of being at war with each other.   And while many of us Englsh speakers are Yanks, and once counted France as our first ally, events over the last few decades has pretty much caused us to forget the memory of Lafayette.

And, there is a tradition of making fun of the French language, especially in film.  Pepe Le Pew, the Taunting Frenchman in Monty Python are a couple examples used in another thread.  It could just be a sign of the times.  I think different nationalities all have their moments, in different eras.  The Germans have had their moment, at least here in the States.  So have the Irish, Scotts and the Poles.  In the part of the USA I live in, there are a lot with Scandanavian ancestry, which leads to plenty of Sven and Lena jokes.

At least it means we are still paying attention to the French.  Would it be better to be ignored completely?  It is human nature to find humor in everything.  And if the French (or any nation) is on a people's collective mind, there is sure to be a decent share of good-natured ridicule.

So...

History and pop-culture?
