Okay guys, I need some help with the High Dragon (The one where you have to save the Arl Eamon, and recover the ashes).

Before you start, I'm NOT very good at these games at all (fail, I know). I'm not very technical with this game at all either, so please try and explain it to a 5 year old, who knows NOTHING about this game.

Anywaysssss.

I'm using Shale, Morrigan, My archer and Zevran.. All level 8/9

Morrigan's healing, I'm hiding away at the back dodging and firing, and occasionally Arrow of Slaying, which does absolutely nothing really haha.. Shale's just pummeling away, and Zevran does.. not much?

I can generally get him down to about 1/2 or 1/3 health, but then Morrigan gets nailed, and eventually so does the rest of the team.. The fireballs seem to be the biggest problem to me. Also, which would be the best tactics to have Morrigan follow me CONSTANTLY, not just when she feels like it? If she sticks with me, I can keep her alive long enough.. (Note, I have tried controlling her, but then my archer gets nailed)..

The closest I got was 1/3 health, where Zevran died early on, and Morrigan could focus on healing Shale.

Thanks to anyone who does bother to reply, I appreciate it :)

Right, wrong or "too easy" my first play through was with a mage (mainly healing but dps too - me), Morrigan, Allistair (tanking)  and Shale (off tanking / dps) :D

What I ended up doing was everytime the High Dragon repositioned herself I would pause the game and take control of any of my mages that she landed near and get them away asap. A ranged attack or something I found hit for a bit less than a direct melee hit on a mage! Now, I forget if she can grab a party member and chomp on them for a bit - I assume that is a common dragon attack, and if she grabs your healer make sure you are mashing the health pot button for them. It might save them or not, but at the very least if they survive the chomping they will heal a bit when they are put down and won't get killed by a hit right after.

Playing the healer I was able to really control the amount of damage most of my party was taking but you cannot be afraid of abusing health potions. If you don't already have a health potion tactic I would suggest creating at least one. Before I had the "cooler" healing spells I had a Self: Health < 50% use smallest potion and a Self health <25% use biggest potion. Might help if you aren't very good or keen with micromanaging the entire battle.

In the end, it might just come down to luck. But keep an eye out for an out of position member of your party and pause it if you have to, but get them in the right spot and you will eventually get her down.

There is no shame in waiting until you get a bit higher level and a bit more comfortable with your party and how they play together. The High dragon will be there when you are ready for her

Alright, thanks very much :). Appreciate the help.. I'll give it a go tomorrow, as I'm about to go to sleep now, but I'll let you know :)

Thanks for the lack of patronising that I was sure to come, too, haha.

Wow, a question, and a mature helpful answer.

I am impressed!!!

I failed at low level on her too, then came back at like 16 and my warrior could practically solo it with a little peppering from Liliana. Wynne and Oghren died which was no biggie.

I plan to do it around 12 or so so it has a little more challenge.

If you have enough health pots the battles on normal are all pretty easy.

Ahh okay, thanks. Where's the best place to get health pots by the way? I think I could do with a couple more :D

Make them yourself if you have Herbalism.  Elfroots can be bought from Dalish elves, and everything else from the Gnawed Noble Tavern barkeeper.

Yeah, learn to make regular and maybe great health poultices. Its easier when you have funds.

One health poultice takes one spot in your inventory ... but 99 poultices also take only one spot total, so I stocked myself to 99 poultices and have not had to replenish my stock since.

Move a lot is the best advice the dragons' fireballs are her weakest ammunition, she'll melee like a @#*@#ng truck. If you're good with a mage it is entirely possible to solo with just that, if not keep damage up as much as possible and keep debuffs on. Misdirection being the biggest one. The dragon will move to 3-4 designated spots as soon as she moves move away from her, she will not actually follow you. Just jump up and fly to the closest spot, this is key. Mages/rogues are easily one shot by gnaw at least on higher difficulties.

First, let me thank you for following the guidelines in my signature. It warms my heart to know that I don't have to ask you the same old questions.

I beat the High Dragon with a very similar setup, so maybe you can adapt the strategy.

I had Alistair tank it...just walk straight up and hit it in its face.

Morrigan was on healing duty primarily. Lelianna was shooting it from range.

My MainChar was a dual wielding dex/cunning rogue, so I switched him to his bow.

So 2 archers shooting, Alistair taking beatings and Morrigan conserving mana for heals. Alistair would drink healing potions as needed. Sometimes when I got the feeling that the dragon was going to grab and chomp, I would have Alistair use a potion even though the healing spell was up...he can't use potions while grabbed, but I can heal him. Life-ward and regeneration are both very helpful.

Everyone except alistair shouldn't be getting hurt except for the initial attack. A mass heal fixes that pretty promptly. Morrigan, myself, and Lelianna are too far out of range for melee and we're positioned such that we can't get hit by flame breath.

To adapt to your strategy, I'm told that Shale doesn't get grabbed, so that's easier. Stack shale with fire resistance and put her in Stoneheart to reduce the pain.

Aside from that it should be the same.

I also had Lelianna use Suppressing Fire + Rapid shot. I don't know if that helped, but in theory it should be a nice debuff to the dragon's attack rating.

level 8/9...you're mighty brave to fight the dragon at that level. i usually wait until level 14-15 before doing it. keep in mind you can waltz right into the temple without fighting the dragon. then you can come back later at any point and fight the dragon whenever you're ready.

God damnit.. Thank you!

All the other help was brilliant too, I appreciate it and will definitely use it once I decide to come back and beat it :D

Wish there was some way of giving rep on here..

It's all about positioning. Relocate everytime he's in the air and split everyone far apart. Oh and turn him around with your tank he has to face away from others.
