First, I'm a big Bioware fan. I loved the first KotOR, and, to a lesser extent, the second. Even more than that, I love Dragon Age: Origins. But, when I played Mass Effect, I was just ... underwhelmed.
I felt that the story wasn't all that captivating, the weapons and the battle abilities were really limited, and the main storyline was really short.
Is there anyone else out there who loves most Bioware games but didn't really like Mass Effect all that much? I'm not saying it's a bad game, just that it doesn't seem to be a remarkable game to me at all.
That being said, I will most likely eventually get ME2 after it comes out, simply because I have faith in Bioware.
Am I the only one who didn't like Mass Effect?

I played ME halfway through and was distinctly "meh" about it. Then for some reason or another I picked it up again several months later and simply could NOT put it down. I loved it! Not sure what happened there, actually.

I pretty much adored it on first run through.
I replay once every 6/7 months at this stage. It's mostly out of attraction to the setting though. Nothing gets as dull as the middle (?) english used in all RPG's.

Liked it the first two times. Then it was meh.

I love Mass Effect, as long as you stay to the mains plot. All of the side plots on the 'uncharted worlds' are very dull. It amounts to driving in the maco for fifteen minutes to go talk to somebody. Not worth it.
But I found the main plot to be very captivating.

I thought the main plot had a silly conclusion with the nasty eeties but I found the game itself decent.

Nope, I didn't care for it either. Really not interested in ME2 either. Just doesn't look like Bioware is going in my direction with that series, so I'll pass.

It wasn't Bioware's best, storywise and gameplay wise.
And I only got a chance to play through it twice. After that I had to reinstall, at which point I couldn't play it because of the general protection fault error. Quite annoying.
The characters were pretty meh too. Kaidan and Ashley were especially blah.

It's okay, I prefer classic fantasy rpgs to sci fi, though, so it's not really my thing to begin with. I've had fun with it though, just prefer other games.

To the OP: Yes, yes you are.
In seriousness, it's a different type of game than DAO. However it is one of the most truly cinematic game experiences that I really thought took RPGs to new heights.
Was it a perfect game? No. It had flaws, some glaring. However, as a package it is my favorite game this generation.... save for Mass Effect 2 of course

This thread will be a bit biased since most ME fans are still on the original forums... but yeah ME is generally considered one of the best things to come from BioWare. I'm the exact opposite, as I can't really get into DAO gameplay or setting. I think its fair to say both bring something different to the table... but Mass Effect is far from "meh".

My favourite Bioware game is Baldur's Gate 2 and I don't really care about Mass Effect. Played it once, didn't bother to play it twice. I'll get ME2, but I'm not exactly chasing it or really enthusiastic about it. I followed Dragon Age's progression since they announced it, years ago.

Mass Effect universe is probably my second overall favorite Sci-fi universe (second only to Star Wars). I consider the main plot of Mass Effect the best BioWare has ever released, though as far as party members go I'd say it isn't as good as Dragon Age or Jade Empire, better than KoToR's party members though, but KoToR was another game where the main plot was the main attraction.
That said, they're all eons beyond almost every other video game company in the writing department, except MAYBE Valve's games ,which might be on par.
And don't give me that Silent Hill crap. Good atmosphere =/= good writing necessarily.

I enjoyed ME but I found the main story too short and the side quests were kind of a joke. Not to mention, where are all the dlc's we were promised?
Hopefully they learned from that and ME 2 will be a lot better .

I am not a fan of the series, though it warranted a playthrough.
The gameplay is not my cup of tea (shooter), the companions are average at best, the story is predictable. The only strength it has, for me, is the setting, as I was always craving for some near-future human history setting, with humans fighting their way into the galactic community.

Not really a fan. I'm still on the fence about getting the second one.

It was a fun game for what it was, but what it wasn't was an RPG.
Note how BioWare has made only very small changes to the overall structure of teh game for ME2, including actually improving the implementation of the dialogue wheel, but they're explicity saying that ME2 is not an RPG.
Because ME wasn't either, and now they seem to have realised it. ME was a story-based shooter, but the story was entirely authored and the player had zero control over it (aside from the impression of giving random inputs).

I never played Mass Effect because of the nonsense with the DRM.

Big fan here. it was my first RPG and coming from shooter games, that was the perfect transition.
The Mass Effect universe itself is pretty interesting. I read each codex entry, as well as the two book released so far.

I think Mass Effect is a good game for this reason. It introduces a new audience who refused to try a genre because it wasn't in their style, they thought. It got people to try a new thing, from both sides of the court.Sa Seba wrote...

But I already liked some shooters and the blend didn't quite fit for me, personally. I'll still say it's a good game, just not my cup of tea.
Heck, by today's "standards" of what makes an RPG, it's even a good RPG, so... Yeah.

I think ME was visually very shiny, but it really lacked in the story department. It looks pretty so everyone is like, "OMFG SHINY" and forget that its pretty... eh. None of the characters did anything for me. At all. I think Garrus was my favourite, but his whole story wasn't really done well, so I gave up on thinking he was awesome.

Comparing Dragon Age with Mass Effect, dragon age has way deeper character development and -relationships. I hope Mass Effect 2 will have taken some ideas from Dragon Age.
I think in the 2nd part we will learn more about the surviving companions , so that's already a good start.
Now if they can also implement a better character creation tool... I never got a satisfying result for a custom shepperd.
