Am I the only one who didn't like Mass Effect?

Right. Like the first, it's described as an action RPG/shooter RPG. But if you want a full 'RPG' experience, they now recommend DA:O. At least, one of the doctors said something like that in an interview a while back.

ME is 100% for sure an RPG in my books. Combat doesn't define the genre as much as choices and companions for me and ME is strong enough in those areas to be classified as an rpg for me.

Right.  It's a shooter.  It's not an RPG with shooter elements.  It's a shooter with RPG elements.

That's not an RPG.  That's a shooter.

Semantics matter.

There are many things about Mass Effect that I liked, but just as many -- if not more -- mind-melting and frustrating and disappointing things I disliked. I have some hope for ME2 to give me some final answers on where the franchise is going and if my personal complaints and dislikes are indeed more than valid. We shall see.

I see it as a shooter with some RPG elements. ME2 will also show me how far those elements will be taken -- or abandoned.

QFT.

It isn't the future of RPGs no matter what some may say. Hopefully, at least.

ME was fun, in a cinematic kind of way.
ME2 is moving in a direction I'm not going to like though. I didn't even manage to get through the full 10 minutes of demo on Gamescom :pinched:

I managed to destroy my previous character. I need to play through ME again so I have a save to port over.

I managed to destroy the computer on which I had my previous character.

Errr...not that said destruction had anything to do with Mass Effect.  Just...sharing.  :)

Did it say something bad about Alistiar?

It should have known better! I will now serve as an example to all the other computers not to give Lady Shayna lip.

Not once have I seen BioWare say that Mass Effect 2 is not a RPG. That doesn't mean that they didn't, but a link to the quote would be nice.

Just to point out the not-so-obvious on my ME2 remark; I just didn't get the hang of the new controls and it felt way too shooter-like for my tastes and abilities.

Wasn't the soldier class the only one available for the demo way back when? That would at least explain some of it. Of course, I don't have and haven't played the game in any form.

This thread is still alive? I need to check my subscribed threads more often. :pinched:

In any case, I will most likely buy Mass Effect 2 when it releases, if not later. There are too few story driven games coming out to skip over it. However, I'm trying not to get my hopes up that it will be a huge improvement over the original in plot or gamplay. At least there appears to be better characterization this time around.

So far ME2's cast seems way more diverse and intriguing. They all stand out in either personality or design, and come across as larger than life compared to ME's somewhat bland crew. Subject Zero in particular has one of the more unorthodox designs I've seen in an RPG. Well, not the baldness part, but the rest. She at least *looks* more interesting than Miranda or Samara and I dig that skin tapestry. I just hope she is still interesting once I get past her potty mouth and tats.

I guess I'll be forced to run through ME again as well if I do buy ME2. I just hope planet exploration in the sequel, if any, is drastically improved and that there are more involved side quests. At least this time I have a rough idea of what to expect.

There was 10 mins of gameplay demo available, with a pre-made char (which could very well have been a soldier).

I would never have played DAO if I hadn't played and loved Mass Effect beforehand.

And just because the combat isn't point-and-click or turn-based doesn't mean it's not an RPG.

At least Bioware are making there RPG's diverse than doing the same thing over and over again.
They are also one of the few (only?) AAA developers supporting the pc as a primary platform with a single player RGP game.

Mass Effect was amazing. I was heartily sick of fantasy, the genre is so oversaturated with crap. Dragon Age was fantastic, for sure, but being a die-hard BioWare fan, I'd have played it through anyway.

To the OP: KotOR 2 was made by Obsidian, not BioWare.
