As an aside :a feature to keep in the next CC - as many camera angles as possible to view your "newborn avatar."
It was well done in DAO,but in ME for example,I could not rotate the camera enough,so the profile views were "deceiving",causing the greatest surprise in-game.:pinched:
As Tommy Servo above me poignantly illustrated,my characters ended up with colossal chipmunk cheeks.
They looked like Space Hamster`s distant relations until I "mastered" the sliders.

What I don't understand, is why do all of BioWare's CCs have such poor lighting? I have a high-def tv I play on, and it can still be hard to even tell what some eye colors are clearly until you are actually playing in decent light. Turn up the lights, please!

LMAO! I hear you. I have the same style T.V. hun and I have to get up off my couch and stand right in front of the T.V. an inch away to see the color of the eyes.

Which brings up another thing...Who the hell would want green eyeshadow?!

Where is the pure black stuff Izzy has!

Yes! Give me more black and smoky make-up, and keep that 1970's blue and green stuff.

@happy I also loved the mirror in the BE. If the Mass Effect games had that awesome feature, it would have made me very, very happy.

@Chris *fistbump* I thought I was one of the only ones to put my nose right against my tv screen during character creation.

I agree with pretty much everything that's been said, but I'd like to add PLEASE KEEP THE BLACK EMPORIUM MIRROR OR SOMETHING SIMILAR! (and I never shout, so you know it's important).

Customizing your character after seeing about 10 shots of *canon* Hawke was also really weird. And no one in your playthrough noticed that you suddenly had red hair instead of black. If we're not to do the character customization right off the bat, I'd like to at least see it Skyrim-style where you're in first person until you customize so that there isn't a weird sudden change in your appearance.

And this is only kind of related, but I also found it strange that your family's hairstyles would change through each playthrough. Based on your dialogue choices, or random? - I don't actually know, but aside from reloading to fix my Hawke I would consistently go "dangit - I HATE Leandra with those bangs!" and reload just because I didn't want to keep looking at them for 30 more hours. What a bizarre thing for the company to spend zots on - especially with all their talk about emphasizing each npc's "signature" look.

I agree. I like both default faces and it was a chance to give Hawke a distinctive look right away, but it made utterly no sense for Varric to describe Hawke's strokeable and manly black beard when really he might have had say... orange stubble.

I wish she or he be wearing a helmet or something during that scene.

The Hawke family : We are all individuals! We are all different!
Hawke : I am not!
Leandra : Shhh.

That would have been a good way to go about it, and less facepalm-worthy than having the sudden 180 in appearance. :P

I think its dumb the family looks changes depending on what default face you choose. It almost feels like punishment. Yes, you can have this face, BUT your family will look uglier.

And I agree the whole...play the default character then make your own does not make much sense in Varric's story.

Cassandra: But you told me the Champion had a beard and it was black.

Varric: Well while fleeing the darkspawn instead of stopping to admire the flowers, he shaved his beard. It could have been a squirrel the whole time-who knows

As soon as you get to kirkwall, go to the black emporium and use the mirror. No replays needed! :o

This cannot be repeated enough. Besides, The Black Emporium was such a trippy place that it would make perfect (non)sense to have it reappear somewhere on the other side of Thedas. Having the character creation accessible at any time serves the player and those who feel it breaks their immersion can just avoid it.

I'd like the CC to pop up at the beginning of the game but I do get that Bioware wants to create a beginning with more oomph. However, "more oomph" does not justify the lack of skip option. (Not to mention that pseudo-Hawke and puffed up Bethany at the start of DA2 gave a terrible first impression of the game.)

- CC before intro.
- Black Emporium Mirror in all future games.
- Ability to do some basic animations of the face in the CC, such as some angry squint, sad puppy eyes and something else - with and without talking.

Those three would make me a very happy panda =)

Amen to this thread! Or at least add something like the Black Emporium dlc where we can tweak our characters appearance in game.

I love the idea of being able to test out a bunch of expressions in character creator, so you can tweak your characters face accordingly. That would avoid awkward moments during cutscenes when your character pulls a total derp face at a really inappropriate moment lol.

I actually thought the puffed up Bethany of Varric's tall tale was really funny, especially since it took me a couple of sit throughs to piece together why. But then, that's retrospect. Regarding first impressions, you're absolutely right. My first impression of Bethany's bust was something along the lines of "hmm," in the most confused and incredulous sense of the word.

There's no reason why they couldn't do an exaggerated opening with the character you made though. Or, as I've seen suggested in past similar topics, have Varric portray Hawke as some sort of lyrium demon or something equally outrageous and disconnected from any sort of person. Having commited to that kind of introduction, they could have gotten a lot more ridiculous and entertaining.

It was done so there would be an actual family resemblance between you and yours. Not a bad idea at all, and certainly not dumb. As for "uglier", well it's a matter of taste, so no punishment involved for everyone.

Of course, after a trip to the Emporium, all this could merrily be thrown away, depending on how much you changed your Hawke. However, the intent behind it is rather clever.

That's exactly what I meant by identification problems. I have no idea who this black bearded, 40-ish years old looking man is, but he's certainly not any of my Hawkes. An actor maybe? (in which case, bad, bad casting, Varric).

All non preset chars RPGs should start with this magic moment in the CC where you give birth to your char. If they don't - like in Amalur or the last three TES - then we shouldn't get to see them.

I get the whole Varric being an ass to Cassandra, thumbs up for that, but seriously, this is a game not a damn book.

Are you sure?  The Varric conspiracy states that DA2 was nothing more than a work of fiction, created in the mind of Varric.  Anything that the DA team does not wish to reuse in future games, will just be discounted as Varric telling lies.  The DA2 story may have just as much truth in it, as Varric's "Hard in Hightown".

I do not get that. Going through a long character creation removes all the "oomph". Better to have the "oomph" after the CC, so the beginning will have a better pacing.  I want my character to look just right, so I can easily spend a hour just making my character. By the time I'm done, there is absolutely no "oomph" left.

Dear God yes.

Having character creation stuck after some lengthy, unskippable cutscene or similarly droll intro tutorial sequence is awful. Its like with ME2 or DA2 they're trying to be clever and integrate it more into the game, but if you just want to get to the CC, its horribly annoying. Like unskippable opening logos on games; they're just as bad.

And then of course, when you make your character, it would be nice if they had decent lighting so that when you get in the game they actually look how you thought they looked when you made them.

Definitely agree. It did add to the feeling with Varric's storytelling and exaggeration in the begining, and the immediate action for those who want action. However it should be an option to create the character before, both because of practicality in how people don't want to go through the intro every time they mess up the character creation or if they would get more effect from the intro having their character. There's no reason not to give the option.

Oh absolutely. This was an enormously bad decision last time around. I don't particularly mind if there is a 'cut scene' of sorts prior to character creation to build mood, but it should absolutely not feature the PC in it. I thought Kingdoms of Amalur did this quite well, you didn't see the PC's face/body in the opening scene, but just their shoes, then it cut to character creation.

Personally I agree. I was simply trying to see the beginning from Bioware's point of view.

I think Bioware is afraid that a menu is not what hooks new players and it shouldn't be the first thing that a player sees, especially if she or he isn't familiar with RPGs. Bioware wants to create a hook that happens during the first few minutes of the game. The prologue of the game was used as a demo for both DA2 and ME3 so first few minutes are also promotional material for the game.

As I said, a skippable opening would be a good compromise.

Yes please.

I'm still trying to work out why they didn't do that in the first place. Was it somehow necessary to play through the exaggerated intro with a default Hawke first? Did it serve some actual purpose? I can't really see any.
