So I'm a warden and I'm supposed to be able to sense the darkspawn?

To be fair, you do sense Darkspawn as a Warden. They appear as little red blips on your minimap and can show up even through walls and such. The Wild Turkey wrote...
Yet I see no game play mechanic to represent that. Am I missing something, or was something like the Survival skill planned, but cut before release?
Now true, you can do the same with pretty much everything else too, but that fact alone does not make the statement "Wardens can sense darkspawn (as red blips on the minimap)" false.

They're not showing up for me. I can see the red dots for normal enemies, but not for darkspawn.

As explained multiple times in the campaign, you are new and do not have full use or control of your Grey Warden abilities yet.
But Alistair can supposedly sense them well enough to make the trip into the Wilds safe, and he's been a Warden for six months. After a year or more of being a Warden toward the end of the game our PC never develops the ability, so what rationale is made up at this point?
Correct answer is probably "it got cut to save development costs."

The defense "you're new" doesn't really add up - I have Alistair. And Alistair sure as hell doesn't have a represented Darkspawn sense either. He's ambushed just as much as I am.

Well, they never say how long Alistair has been a warden, just that he is the newest.
Also, perhaps the ability needs some training from a senior warden, which we seem to be short on.

More like "It got cut because Survival would've become near-useless otherwise".marshalleck wrote...

It is fairly evident that Alistair have been travelling with Duncan and the others for quite some time. I'd find the idea that Duncan and Alistair bonded over a week rather odd.Sloth Of Doom wrote...

And if Alistair got the training, he'd be able to pass it on.

i kind of expected to get a few little attribute buffs and some other stuff like you do for choosing specs.
alas there really isnt a grey warden "class" in DAO where as in KotOR when you become a jedi you actually get new abilities based on that class.

Possibly. But the problem with that explanation is that I hear that sound even if I am playing one of my other party members. If this truly is a sense that is unique to me as a Grey Warden it seems to me that it should disappear (along with class talents, etc) when I switch to a different character.outlaworacle wrote...
It's why you can hear Darkspawn screaming and gnashing and guffawing long before you stumble across them. .

Well, by the same token Survival would only be useful on the main character or while controlling the NPC who took it. Just pretend Alistair or the PC has a special look and nod he uses to tell them when he senses Darkspawn

You see the red spots on the minimap because one of your companions have the Survival skill, not because you can "sense" darkspawn. There are no visual representation for the supposed "Darkspawn-sense" - or any representation at all, really.

I think he can. It's just kinda weak...
When I had him in my party before the Joining, along with two other non-wardens, if I selected Alistair while in an area with hidden darkspawn I could hear them. If I selected anyone else, I couldn't hear anything.
