Ok, all of the lore I have read so far doesn't really explain in detail how a High Dragon becomes a Archdemon. First of all, the Archdemon is not a demon at all, so the name is misleading. My bet is that the name stuck because, well it looks like a giant demon.
We know that the Darkspawn was created when a group of Magisters managed to enter the Golden City. I would imagine that this group was vastly powerful, almost godlike, to be able to do this. I think this group of Mages, the first Darkspawn still exists, in the Fade. Like the demons, they are always trying to enter the physical world and can only do so through the most powerful creature in Ferelden, the High Dragon. Before their physical bodies died, they infected many with their taint, to ensure they would have followers to bring them back. From the Fade, they direct the horde as best as they can. That is why the Darkspawn is not really a threat until a Blight.
It's not explained how but I believe that the Darkspawn overwhelm a high dragon when they find one and the Emissaries perform a ritual that allows the Magisters to enter the Dragon and take it as a host. Now in the physical, they can lead the horde and you have a Blight.
The Darkspawn are basically a new race created from other races. Through the Broodmothers, they are constantly being created in the thousands. So really, these Magisters, have become Gods themselves. Everytime a Archdemon is killed by the Grey Wardens, the Magisters lose their host and return to the Fold. Their children, the Darkspawn stay behind and work on finding a new High Dragon to bring them back.
Please critique my interpretation of the Archdemon/Blight

You are a bit off. I'll explain in a short version without completely repeating the Chant of Light.
Archdemons are not merely High Dragons. They are corrupted Old Gods. The Old Gods where once worshipped by many in Thedas, and in particular members of the Imperium. The Maker cast down the Old Gods, and imprisoned them underground. However, the Old Gods still had minds that could wander the Fade. This was how they were able to contact thier followers, and teach them how to breach the Fade to confront the Maker. The Maker then cursed the mages as the first darkspawn.
Darkspawn blood is tainted, and ingested by males it will drive them mad, and eventually kill them. If this is done to females of a species enough taint can turn them into Broodmothers. Broodmothers of Human origin create Hurlocks. BM's of Dwarves create Genlocks. Elves create Shrieks, and Qunari create Ogres. Now, remember that the Old Gods were cast into the Earth, and are slumbering. Darkspawn are in the Earth. Darkspawn find sleeping Old God, and force feed it thier blood until it becomes suitably corrupted. Old God awakens as an Archdemon, a very intellegent, and wholely evil being. It then organizes the darkspawn horde into a Blight.
"A learned child is a blessing unto his family, and unto the Maker."

Very interesting. The Chant of Light though is just one version/explanation.
