Seems logical if you might be king to keep it.

You have to keep it! It is your family's sword!

Just put in your chest for the far off future once you get a better one.

To kill Howe; it´s a cool form of poetic justice.

I wish it could be upgraded to Dragonbone.... wish the shield could be upgraded, too.

I really thought that cheap sword was a disgrace to my in-game family. They should have made it a very high level sword you can only carry once you're good enough. I'd have made it require strength of 50 and be the best sword in the game.

There's a PC version mod that does just that.
Consoles? Well you're just out of luck. Again.

Hmmm, I'm pretty sure with the toolset you can make the sword have some use for later levels. I'll have to mess around with it.

Edit:

Oh nevermind. Seems someone already did.

There are a number of silly things like this in game.

Duncan: This mace belonged to the Aeducan family for generations. It is a priceless relic of your people.

Me: Thanks, I could certainly use... ugh, tier 2. Seriously Duncan?

*sold*

This mod from the projects section might be of interest to you if you'd like to keep using your heirlooms:

Check this one out for continual in-game upgrades.

It's neatest feature IMO is changing shield heraldry. As a noble I like putting the Cousland seal on all my shields, so whatever I use, Howe can see my family's coat of arms on the shield I'm bashing his skull in with.

On early levels they really help but once you begin levelling up I guess you can sell it or store it for immersion.

Playing a noble human selling your last family heirloom doesn't sit with me comfortably. Until you get the next best weapon I suggest you keep it and use it, +4 attack longsword plus +4 attack enchanted dagger is not bad at all.

I have to try that mod since a shield with the covering art from certain Overkill record will be perfect for Howe´s face.

Oooooh must get that, if only for the upcoming patch so that my new dwarf commoner can learn that skill that they are implementing... so he can be just like his twin brother! :wizard:

*Suddenly has a vision of Duncan meeting Flipflop (aforementioned dwarf/avatar) for first time*

Flipflop: Enchantment?
Duncan: Hmm, you seem like a very powerful person
Flipflop: ENCHANTMENT!
Duncan: Yes, I must induct you into the Grey Wardens, I believe you could defeat the Blight all by yourself!

On topic, yeah as far as the human nobles go I tend to keep them even if just as 'heirlooms' just as my dwarven noble will keep the Aeducan shield. Again though I really like the idea of that mod for situations such as these.

Does it work with Sten's sword too?

One thing that has kinda been a gripe of mine since doing Sten's sword quest is that I think it is great how he talks of that sword being part of his soul and so it seems a bit silly him wielding anything else after retrieving it. Now with this mod players will be able to ensure it is true.

Actually the sword should be upgradable like some of the other gear is. Usable only by the PC not as OP as Starfang but upgradable still. Same thing with the family shield or at least allow me some sort of way to add the family herald to what ever shield i choose to use, i know i can use the winter forge mod, but not being able to do this seems like a missed opportunity for the Bioware folks to further immerse you in the game.

its an old family relic.. thats why u keep it, not because it can be reforged every hour u discover new tier weapons... silverite/dragon bone etc. why cant ppl be happy with some items.

u discover new strong items to fight, some old items are discarded when there getting old / weak.

I suppose that Winter Forge will allow me to change the shape of those atrocious square shields into Round Shields or Kite Shields, too? If so, it completely seals the deal.

I kept it. Selling your family's sword just seems so tacky. I have it in the storage chest at Soldier's Peak right now, but I intend to bring it with me when I go to fight Howe.

I like to imagine that after the Blight is defeated and Fergus reemerges from his vacation in the Korcari Wilds, King Alistair gives the sword back to him.

Doesn't need to be upgraded... if it were some badass weapon, it would probably have been carried into battle by your older brother, rather than left sitting in a chest collecting dust. It's not about it being a legendary weapon, it's about it being a family heirloom.

Kept it for roleplaying sentiment.

I slew Howe with it, right after crushing a couple of his bones with the shield of Highever. Poetic justice.

I kept it for sentimental reasons, while secretly hoping that in the end it would be somehow upgraded/strengthened in a plot. Not unlike how the 1H sword in Icewind Dale got upgraded to a +5 sword near the end of the game.
