Are people serious that they've never encountered this?

Never.

I play on the PC. People hardly even talk.

Indeed. In fact, I get taken aback when I hear someone say something. The few times people talk, they are usually fun to listen to. But gameplay-wise, mics are not needed.

I did have one incident a while back. Basically around the time the Resurgence DLC was out and I had a random team with one guy that basically trash talked about me playing a Geth Engineer on Silver (Weak Health, die easily, won't come save you bs). He kept moaning through most of the round so I ended up putting the volume down until the full extraction. He still didn't shut up after I came out first. Sides that incident, nothing else happened. ME3's surprisingly more tamed in the trash talking department based on my own experience.

Most of the time I barely ever have people that even talk when I play with all randoms.

I've never seen rude behavior at all either. Like you I am on PC and most of the time the people in game hardly even talk.

I assumed this user must be on the Xbox were that type of stuff is more common, but checking the OP manifest shows they are on PC.

On Xbox you can File a complaint and submit a bad player review which stops you from getting in games with them in the future.

Yep, I'm on PC. As I said, this was just one incident and I've been playing multiplayer since the game came out, so I'm counting myself lucky.

Also I should say that there have been a few occasions when I've come across people who are absolutely lovely and we've ended up having great chats and playing multiple matches together, even though they were just random passers by - that's one of the reasons why I don't particularly want to turn off my headset. Just because there are a few boofheads shouldn't mean I should lose the opportunity to meet nice people.

Doesnt seem to be as much of a problem on the PC.
Have had a couple of people who insist on having mics turned to 'always on'. Much rage ensues

On the PC, you can not mute other players, only yourself.  There have been multiple times where I have wished to be able to mute others.  (Although it is only a small percentage, it is a VERY vocal percentage.)

And when they do talk, it ends up being "Kira (something in a language that I don't speak)" which I just ignore since I'm not going to google translate everything someone says.

Is there some form of complaint one can put in? At the moment if I encounter idiocy (and by idiocy I mean racism/sexism/homophobia or downright rudeness) I'm just blacklisting the name and kicking the player whenever I see them (luckily I haven't had to do that since I never seem to see the same player twice) but I wondered if there was a system for reporting user names???

If you banned all of the immature types from the game...well, you'd get to know the other 3 players left on the leaderboard REALLY well.

From my own experience and the experiences of my friends, the problem is greatest on PC, for the lack of a mute.
Although a much higher percentage of PC players have no microphones, but crappy detection makes it look like they do.

Stereotyping is kinda stupid.

If you really want a quiet game where nobody gives a toss, go play Call of Duty. It's stereotyped as the whiny squeaker's heaven, so it's obviously not. Believe me, I've tried it - just don't like it for unrelated reasons, despite it being a brilliant game.

Ummmm. not true on PC.  Go to options/sound/voice mode and /Force Voice Chat Audio

For the first choose No Voice, and for the second choose Off.  No audio chat from you or anyone else - just the sounds of the game.

It's my default.  I'm frankly afraid of what I'll hear if I were to listen in to the conversations going on in a random game.  Better to fill in the blanks in my own head. Image IPB

A mute option would be nice. Nothing ruins a good game like someone who's mic is always on (it's set to be perma-on in the options) and yet he doesn't say a damn thing. It's annoying to have to deal with keyboard flapping, mouse clicking, neckbeard-breathing, and in-game noises being routed back through the mic into everyone else's ears.

What is that old saying... "anonymity breeds contempt" is it? Well, apparently anonymity also breeds a large amount of complete idiots as well. It is part and parcel of the package though, best just to leave the lobby or game. Reporting is good so you avoid idiots in the future, but other than that you cannot hope for more.

I just think there should be some consequences for people being racist, homophobic, misogynist bigots. *shrugs*. It doesn't bother me so much, if I see their name in the lobby again I'll just kick the player or leave, but it would be nice if something worse could happen to them.

agree but online experiences arent rated people can say whatever they want

Is it weird if someone is ignorant of the derogatory terms associated with their own race? Somebody called me a spook over Xbox Live one time, I had to look it up.

I feel like not being able to see their gamertags, at least on Xbox 360, tends to make me irritated. Mostly because I cannot file a complaint :(. I haven't really faced many of these ordeals though. They sound absolutely despicable though :(.

I played with a "team" last night who made fun of me for not having a mic on a gold match. After almost getting booted, they selected the usual FBW/Geth combo.

They pretty much bossed me to do the device objectives, whilst cursing at me to do them, knowing I can't talk back. I ignored it at first, but then when we got another device objective, and them keeping up the immaturity, I just stood over them (they were hiding downstairs), and I proceeded to just waste my ammo shooting at them. At this point they were on full "WTF are you doing" mode. We then got surrounded, I just disappeared and ran to the opposite end of the map, while I waited for them to get wiped out. I then just stood still to get killed.

Turns out I ended up having 40K more points than those clowns.
