The greatest defense to this is to be even MORE offensive than the one offending you.

Here is a list of starter insults to help you devolve into their mindset:

1) Question not only their sexuality but imply that their deity(s) also question it.
2) At the end of things they say follow it quickly with "thats not what your Mother/Father said last night", if their parent(s) are dead say "you only need one hand to use a Ouija Board".
3) Sing Showtunes, preferably off key.
4) If said player is playing a Krogan tell them how cute their tail is. Make sure to follow them around and crouch in cover to "stay at tail level".
5) and finally, ask them how much they enjoy Zumba Fitness/Dance Central, despite their protests ask them about their favorite exercises/songs.

I got into a bronze game with a clown (who was the leader) that kept making fart sounds in the lobby. I called him out for being immature and left the lobby.

Fart sounds maybe funny to people and their friends but in a random public game, it is NOT amusing for other people.

If this kind of thing offends you, I don't know how you're even managing to survive on the internet.

The worst I've encountered on PC is two guys joining my lobby, switching to awful-on-purpose loadouts, refusing to change/leave, them initiating a kick on me. When I left one of them added me to apologise.

I'm a little disappointed in the conviction of trolls on PC ME3 MP. You console users should be happy you're getting the full internet experience.

I just think there should be some consequences for people being racist, homophobic, misogynist bigots. *shrugs*. It doesn't bother me so much, if I see their name in the lobby again I'll just kick the player or leave, but it would be nice if something worse could happen to them.

There is a reason that nothing can be done about them without solid proof. Pissy kids who play Halo and CoD/BF that get pissed off when someone beats the tar out of them, so they go and file complaints and cry foul when the player was just better than them.

So you can blame mainstream shooter games for the degradation of online community.

That's kind of like saying you shouldn't report being mugged because sometimes people make false reports about being mugged.

I don't think that one report should be enough to ban a player or anything that drastic. But if someone comes up as being repeatedly offensive (if more than one person reports them, for example) I don't see any harm in it.

right first of all i must appoligize if i have offended any one that has joined our trio as a random, we take the mick out of each other and i can see some might take it offensively, but we will continue to do this, so if you hear a brit, candian and a belguim, just join in if you can, no offence is meant but we do use stereotypical insults and the odd swear word.

but to be honest online gaming with out it is less fun and too formal

Not unacceptable but quite funny, one guy was talking on the phone at the same time as playing all about his girl, and getting the car fixed, and his hocky team being in some play-offs ..

I have simple logic, have thick skin or get off the internet.
There are all kinds of people out there and they don't have your sensitivities or issues- either you deal with it or leave.

Or host a private room and play with friends only.
If it wasn't for my mic picking up my radio and my game sounds I would have it on more often and you would hear me rage at my team and call them all kinds of names.

Hey, I have thick skin. I have no problem calling this guy on his crap, which I did, over the mic, quite strongly. But bad behaviour is bad behaviour. You wouldn't let a guy in a coffee shop stand up and call you names and not react somehow. People need to let go of this idea that on the internet is is OK to do things you wouldn't do in real life. It's not. It's not ok to call people names, or question their sexuality, or their faith, or their gender or threaten to rape them, or harm them in real life, so why on EARTH would people think it's ok to do it on the internet? Seriously?

There are human beings on the other end of the mic and when you say stuff like this you hurt people. Simple as that. If you think it's funny or ok to insult random strangers (note I said STRANGERS because when I am in a friend match I say whatever I want because MY FRIENDS KNOW ME) because HEY IT'S THE INTERNET then there is something wrong with you. Period.

Let me guess, your answer to the friend request was a simply "reject" and a spoken "Lolno"?

As if I'd ever wanted to waste place on my friendslist with such people.

Clearly you do not if you are on here complaining. Also I am saying it IS ok. I even EXPECT it  from people. Because the internet (And gaming) is filled with retards and  douche bags.
That is a fact that isn't going to go away as long as anonymity exists.

If you want to see real trolling go to 4chan or Reddit. Post what you have said here over there and you will get mocked and laughed at and called a lot worse.

So no, you do not have thick skin, quite the opposite, this is how I read this post "boohoo, the kids over there said nasty things to me and now I'm upset and want to take away their toys :crying:"

Also I suggest you go watch some livestreaming of gaming, you will hear a lot of what you call "bad" mentioned, only time you wont is when they are sponsored.
On top of that you may want to look at Fatuglyor****ty. com (not linking it, some 18+ words) - it showcases some of the best/worst(?) insults that females endure in gaming on live, pc and psn- maybe then you will realise just how whiny this topic actually sounds. <_<

Anyway this will be my last post in this topic. Because I am mature enough to let it go...

A mute button would have been nice. Preferably one that is quick to get to without navigating through a lot of menus.

Erm. "The right to free speech" just means that the authorities shall not persecute you for expressing your opinion. It does not mean that a privately owned communication channel is in any way legally required to publish your opinion if they do not want to.

In other words, it's not fine for the government to throw you in jail for distributing pamphlets, but it's perfectly fine for a privately owned newspaper to decide not to print the contents of your pamphlet. And it's also perfectly fine for a privately owned gaming service to throw you out if you're being a dick.

*le sigh* Complaining about bad behaviour isn't "whining", and I note that even you don't attempt to defend the behaviour of the people in question. If we shut up and take it we're basically saying that it's ok, and no one here has said that it's ok as far as I can see. The only arguments against me seem to consist of "It happens, so deal with it". My way of dealing with it is suggesting, politely, that there be some recourse or consequence for people behaving like d*cks. And I'm extremely aware of the things that females have to "put up with" online, as I am one, and I'm often online.

I've read the site you've mentioned. It's appalling. At no time have I said that I've suffered the things mentioned there during Mass Effect Multiplayer. As I've ALSO mentioned several times, my ME3 multiplayer experience has up to this single incident, been refreshingly lovely. What's wrong with me wanting to keep it that way?

Bullying is bullying, offensive behaviour is offensive, and the more people say "it's the internet, you need to deal with it" the more I have the urge to prompt people to sodding well change the internet.

PC really needs a mute function. I havent had any negative experiences as of yet with people on the mic but I would like to keep that option open.

Yeah, it seems quite less frequent on PC as I believe most of the "kids" are on the consoles (and by kids, I mean anyone with the maturity of a kid).  So, I feel for the Xbox and PS3 players that have to deal with that stuff.  Actually, on most of my PC matches, people don't talk at all.

I think the only thing you can do is just drop the room and move to another match.  Try to find some friends to play with.

While I don't easily get offended, it is quite annoying to have someone swearing repeatedly in your ear, screaming, farting, whatever.  I was a pre-teen once, thanks, no need to go back to that.

That being said, my PC handle is PSUHammer if anyone is interested in playing.  I usually play Silver/Gold.

In this scenario...it would be fun.  But, I can only imagine what an unsuspecting fourth party thinks when they join.  LOL.

It only becomes "OK" or "EXPECTED" if we let it be.  When you have groups like the Penny Arcade team campaigning against this very behavior, then, no, it is not socially acceptable.  And your citing "
Fatuglyor****ty. com " (i.e. a site dedicated to calling out people out on a slice of what we are talking about) and using that to say that the OP is immature, makes you sound like you have no clue what some people endure.

Socially unacceptable behavior is socially unacceptable.  We are the society.  If we, as a society, choose to ignore these infractions, then they will continue.

I would ask that BioWare/EA give us the tools in Origins to deal with it.  Let us mute other players, then track who gets muted, and how often.  Going with the Penny Arcade/Extra Credits suggestion, take action on the repeate offenders, first warnings, then bans.  There are Rules of Conduct in the Forums, and there should be in the game, as well.

I don't do quick matches anymore, and I try to open up lobbies to the public as rarely as possible. It's not always bad, or even usually bad, and I even have people on my friends list that joined in games because we needed to fill that one last slot so I'm open to doing that when needed. But having built up my friends list through a group here in BSN, I just really don't like joining public games anymore.
