I'm currently soloing a level 14 assassin through the game. Things have been going pretty well so far but I finaly tired of not having the boots of speed so I decided to the astral plane quest line. So far so good. The master of thralls is my next opponent and I can't get past him no matter what I do. He sees through stealth and is immune to poison. I'm unable to stand toe to toe. Does anyone have to some advice or strategy that would work for me? Are there any helpful tips for single class thieves, in general, that would be beneficial? Thanks

What versions/patches/mods do you have? That can influence the answer somewhat. The master of thralls has both a hold and stun attack, and in vanilla, freedom potion can defend against both of them. Potion of magic shielding would do the trick as well.

There's a number of items that can be obtained early on that can summon help. Kithix the spider (found in the crypts, defeat Panai and her spiders), the berserker horn (found in the bridge district). Are you saying you can't beat it with melee, not even with haste potion?

Another item that could help immensely with defeating him is the Ilbratha - it's a sword that a melee (such as yourself) can use to do mirror image, will let you last much longer. You get it by helping the Cowled Wizard in Umar Hills with his stone golem by getting him mephit blood.

Backstabs are useless you are right on that, since he sees through invisibility. Potions of explosion might help but has some magic resistance so not sure how effective that would be.

One more item that might help - rod of resurrection! Some players don't know that if you target yourself, it's a FULL heal.

Surely with all these items your victory would be assured.

EDIT: Forgot one more thing that can help immensely - Ring of Air control! (you get from Ribald's). It casts improved invisibility. It improves saves and AC and armor by 4 and he can't target you with his spells if he doesn't dispel it (which I don't believe he can).

EDIT2: Couple more things about the ring of air control - can buy unlimited amount in vanilla from Ribald's and it can control air elementals! You could use the Master of Thrall's air elementals against him! That could help...

Yea I probably didn't go into this as prepared as I should be potion-wise. Nonetheless I did actually get past him though it was by pure luck. With oil of speed I was somehow able to run behind and backstab him before he could turn around. Pure luck like said. But yea I didn't have any summons to help distract the target either. That would've definitely helped. At any rate I'm just playing the vanilla game on core rules. I know pretty pathetic right? lol. Thankfully the Warden was susceptible to poison so he was brought down real quick. Afterwards a made a B line to roger the fence and stole all his good potions so I'm stocked up and ready to go. Normally I prepare more but I guess I thought I would be okay. Lesson learned. Thanks for the feedback. I'm trying to get good like you guys. :)

Hmm, well "good" is a pretty subjective term. While I am very experienced with vanilla and have a lot of success with fighter types (paladins, rangers, fighters), I suspect you're better with an assassin than I am. I've never even beat the game with one with a group.

That's pretty much the way I like it (apart from Ascension which affects TOB). I keep looking at one very popular mod and while almost every change it makes seems sensible and an improvement I just don't enjoy the result as much as the standard game to unnamed mod: It's not you, it's me!

Hey guys, thanks again for the responses. I don't need the game to be any harder...lol. Besides I'm worried mods like that would make certain items/weapons and classes obsolete.

That's not completely true, as Barchuck found out. Backstabbing occurs when you are invisible, behind the target, and the target is not immune to backstabbing. Targets that see though invisibility such as demons etc are harder to backstab, particularly solo, as they turn to face you, but with the help of summons and boots of speed, it is possible.

You do pick up the staff of fire in this area, and that gives you fire elemental summons.
The only reason we may need slightly more of a challenge than Vanilla-core is because we've been playing it longer. Soloing a thief is quite tough, and there are many here who have never seen the appeal of thieves at all, so I salute you.

Do you know I was thinking this very thing, and planning to revisit a Tactics / Def Jam / limited SCS2 / Ascension install. Yes I know Tactics is broken, and the AI isn't worthy of licking the unnamed mod's boots. However my fondest memories of BG2 are with tactics. It's a game, you want to be presented with a moderate challenge, and then beat it using skill, strategy, and judicious use of items, not live in fear of people wearing robes. OK my main gripe probably comes down to the damn invisibility/ADHW mages cast when you sneak behind them completely hidden

After several years of SCS 2, I too have recently returned to an almost full Tactics/Ascension install, and am having a blast. The only improved tactics component I did not install was improved Faldorn, who has been toned down, but is still brokenly difficult. I have even had a lot of fun with Improved Illych, and have worked out fairly secure tactics to beat him with a solo mage/thief and a solo beserker/thief. The thief class is almost essential for any solo attempt...mainly for the traps and backstabbing.

Well so far I've got 2 games running: One with a solo assassin and one with a multi-class fighter/thief. The fighter/thief has been an absolute beast. I'm already maxed level and I'm just now getting ready to head to spellhold. It's been the easiest run I've ever had with a solo character. Even Watcher's Keep for this character was breeze. Thief and fighter HLAs are stupidly good and, if you can believe it, its my first time ever playing a fighter/thief in BG2. Best of both worlds I guess. The assassin has been a much slower game but more fun in some ways. The obvious issue is he can't fight toe to toe. Ranged attacks are hard to use if you don't have a distraction set up in advance. But at the same time, I've taken down liches and mages so easily with this character cause of good ol' poison. Now that I've gotten a few powerful items and potions I think this character will finally hit his stride. So recap: Fighter/Thief has been just ridiculous. Assassin just oozes flavor and strategy.

Yeah my first solo was a F/T through vanilla BG1. Transformed my view of the game. Ended with a million XP in a game that normally tops out at 160k, or 90k without the expansion. Overpowered much? Hell yes.

On that note, if you go for a tactical mod later, don't forget the xp cap remover, there's one in the tweak pack. Alternatively, the Def Jam mod I mentioned reduces the XP rewards by a percentage you select, so you shouldn't hit the cap until much later. Personally I hate playing without my XP moving, I'd rather remove XP for disabling traps and learning spells, and reducing some of the more ridiculous quest rewards.
