I've heard people saying that you can trade him a silver ring, yet I have one and it's not appearing under the tradeable items. Any idea why?

he accepts
1.an amulet from finishing the dalish-turned-werewolf quest.
2.a book from the elf kid wannabe hunter who you can give a wolf pelt.
3.A black pearl found in the temple just before the sacred ashes temple.

1. It's a scarf not an amulet.
2. You can just talk to Ghenya and convince her she's being stupid, no pelts needed. Only one coercion point.

Fairly sure any book will do ( the gifts you give to Wynne ).

There are at least two books, one is found in the chest that lanaya yells at you to keep out of (you can still loot it, she just dislikes you even more). I can't recall where the other is found. Silver ring is just a regular silver ring that is usually vendor loot. Scarf works too. I hear you can get boots off the injured hunter you find in the forest that the hermit likes.
First time I've heard of the black pearl being used here though! I always wondered what it did (aside from lighting the fire in the temple, which I still have no idea what that does).

the ring is the dusk ring from the chest by the shade camp (behind the grand oak); you can trade the scarf or amulet dependin on what you have and the book from cammen the little elf guy is the only book that works

You cannot use a normal silver ring. I couldn't trade him one that I brought along, specifically to see if I could. You DO get to trade him the Dusk Ring.
The purpose of the Black Pearl, as you said, is to light th eBrazier in the Urn's ruins. The purpose of lighting the brazier, as far as I can tell, is simply to unlock the Codex entry it is described under, and the 50 XP that comes with it.

If I remember correctly he also accepts the amulet made from the Halla horns. You get the horns by talking to the dalish elf by the injured Halla in the village and telling her it's sick (having no survival and lying to, pursuading her works). Then take the horns to the merchant in town and he makes an amulet that pretty much sucks compared to others.

Irritating to know about the silver ring thing.... My prior playthroughs I didn't have any on hand and refused to give up the Dusk ring. I was bringing one along this time!
However, is there any reason to trade him more than one item? I ended up trading him Cam's useless book for the helm, and then just pulled the acorn out of the stump. Am I missing something aside from a way to keep there hermit alive?

Dusk Ring from the camp behind the oak tree if I remember correctly but you miss out on Dawn/Dusk combo later
Deygan's Boots. loot his gear before you take him back to camp
Book you get from Cammen's Lament romance quest
Song Book in chest next to keeper
Scarf from werewolf
Black Pearl? neat never knew this.
Possibly all amulets you get from questing the area.
So many options and you only need one for acorn or 3 total. Or two then kill him for acorn.

Is the book worth it? I kind of want to keep my Dusk Ring...
