Maybe red lyrium is somehow related to blood magic.
Because mages can channel the fade (call it blue magic)
And they can channel magic thru blood (red magic)

Now it's hard to know about the difference between the two , because pure blue lyrium is also a dangerous thing.
What templars use is a form of lyrium which is treated somehow , (i don't recommend licking a lyrium vein , i remember reading lyrium tends to burn).
I also remember stories about dwarf mining lyrium (blue , i guess) and losing their minds as the years pass.

So I guess it's still up to the writer to tell us in the future what's so special about red lyrium.
Because The idol is something that seems special beyond the lyrium thing .Could have been cursed ...

Guess this is speculation and not spoiling.......

What if the idol indeed was infused with blood magic and the wardens go to the thaig to investigate it.
Blood like lyrium is a red thread in Thedas.

The idol could be linked to Tevinter. Blood magic using magisters to go into the fade maybe? (and cursed because of that)

The wardens trying to find a cure from the taint?

Maybe the red lyrium in Kirkwall has something to do with the veil being so thin there? Perhaps the thin veil causes the red lyrium or visa versa?

Yes that could the case...........

But it takes the party about a week to travel to the thaig. Would this not mean that it's where abouts are further into Thedas?

Kal Sharok/Orlais even Image IPB?

I'm not sure, I thought they meant it would take them a week to travel deep inside the thaig and out again lol. The thing about the deep roads is that it stretches for miles underground, they could have been anywhere in Thedas LOL.

Yes that is very true. The thaigs are spread under most part of Thedas I think.
Haha, made the assumption because the next game will take place in Orlais and what better place then a thaig in that region to give us some more explanation about it Image IPB.

Wow, many interesting ideas, guys. Really love alot of them.

Since there's already a ton of minor spoilers in here, this should be ok to say ...

I have to point out that both Varric and Bartrand comment that the Thaig withthe  Lyrium Idol in it is older than the records recorded in the Shaperate. So we're talking a really old civilization of Dwarves with diffirent building styles.

Yes, it took them a week to travel to the thaig through the deep roads. My understanding is that the opening to the deep roads was fairly close to Kirkwall.

My theory about the Primeval Thaig is that it's one of the forgotten places where elves and dwarves lived together in the Deep Roads (which we wouldn't even know about if it weren't for the Witch Hunt DLC). Not just because of red lyrium and strange idols, but because Bartrand remarked that the thaig's architecture and design didn't match up with anything he'd ever seen or heard of before. When Hawke asks him something to the effect of "couldn't the dwarves have just forgotten?" he says something like "I know enough about dwarves to know that we haven't changed that much, even for thousands and thousands of years."

Plus there are the Profaned and that other hunger demon-y boss down there and that's not normal for the deep roads. Some kind of magic was practiced down there in addition to the existence of lyrium, and it wasn't done by the dwarves, and we can be almost positive it wasn't done by the Magisters (the place was too deep, the entrance was unknown, they would have remembered/plundered it better). That leaves the elves. Just my theory. :)

M0RD3CA1 VII: I'd forgotten about how old it was lol, I wonder if they will go into more details about that?

I can only presume that all the happenings of DA2 regarding the idol etc will be explained in one of the future games. Makes me wonder if the red lyrium will play a bigger part in DA3 than we think.

Oh yes, the "Idol" Thaig is quite an old structure. Bartrand barely recognized it as Dwarven.

Well, considering M basically turned into a lyrium infused statue (haha), there is an oppurtunity to investigate the origin of the lyrium idol and the dwarven thaig ...

Well the thaig and its now inhabitants raise a lot of questions...
The Profane eats lyrium and they "hunger" so that might be the last stage of a serious lyrium addiction .:D
"see templars this is your future , don't do it , or you also end up all mad in some caves , writting pretty poem on the walls about being forgotten by the gods!Lyrium is bad!"

Good point!

And if magic has been practiced down there, what with all the lyrium then that doesn't bode well... unless those intelligent talking Dark Spawn have been practicing magic down there... which is worrying!

The codex entry about the Profane says that they are the spirits of "evil" dwarves who were rejected by the stone ...
Just thought I'd point that out.

Well it literally drained her into a husk at the end of the battle so you may well be right there! She probably wasn't sleeping or eating much either, instead locking herself away in her office like Cullen mentioned.

There must be some sort of living essence within it because Meredith managed to make all the statues come to life... it's funny, by the end of it Meredith was essentially using magic like a Mage and going crazy on the power, which is the very thing she dispised lol.

I dread to think what would happen if Mages started taking the stuff, especially a blood Mage. That could only spell trouble.

Just the fact that the idol was lying around on some kind of altar in a big shrine is food for thought. Why was it left there when the thaig was abadonned if not to dangerous to have around?

The profanes are guardians. They guarded the treasure room but not the idol.
There was a golem present so some 'modern' technology was known to the dwarves who build the thaig (could be a plothole though). Tooo many mysteries.

how about if that idol was sculpted by dwarves from the remains of the previous person who went ballistic with it?
