I posted on this topic a few days back but it seems to have got lost in the ether.   
I recently had to reload the game onto a new computer as my old one had died.    I have downloaded the various game add ons that I had previously, including the Black Emporium, which I thought included the mabari warhound.   I now have dog appearing in Gamlen's house and can interact with him there but not on my inventory bar, so I cannot summon him to do battle.   Any ideas on why this is?  Thank you.

"Summon Mabari" is an ability. Should have an icon in the lower-right of your "Character -> Abilities" screen that you can drag onto the quickbar if you want.

Thank you, that did the trick. Feel a bit stupid for not thinking of it myself.
