If you want a single fire weapon and like button mashing, multi shot sniper rifles seem to be a better choice, ie. Raptor > Mattock, each shot does more damage.

No, it doesn't. (This stupid link thing isn't working, so I'll just post it here: http://narida.pytalh...es/#31BAANAE9g9)

^You can test that on Gold by taking the Mattock and Raptor for a run, side by side, on a TS. The Mattock does more damage per shot, has higher DPS, and generally drops enemies faster.

The Raptor's only advantage over the Mattock are a faster reload time (not by much), an in-built scope, and a larger clip capacity. Since the Raptor is a sniper rifle, it suffers damage loss when fired unscoped. Its visual bounce when scoped is also greater than a scoped Mattock (but shot grouping is basically the same as the Mattock) which can be irritating when rapid firing (which you pretty much always have to do).

It hits harder and pierces armour equally well. Hence, the Mattock love makes sense to me. People with different playstyles would disagree, I suppose.

Initially used the Mattock since I unlocked it first, but soon moved to the Phaeston on the Turian Sentinel and never looked back.

That's your choice. Personally, I don't find the Phaeston, or any auto assault rifle for that matter, useful. Gotta lean out of cover for too long.

(The Revenant doesn't count: That thing should be in an entirely different class of its own called "Artillery")

If you have an N7 Hurricane, put points in stability, slap it on your Sentinel and become an Anti-Everything.

That's good to know!  I guess I go by the damage bar thingie and its pretty useless to tell the difference using that.

Actually isn't the Raptor the only sniper that's fine when hip fired, ie. no damage loss?

Does upgrade levels matter?  I tried it on the Turian Soldier but with a still low level Revenant, it wasn't very impressive, unless the targets are close enough.

Yeah, the damage meters ingame are completely useless.

You're right, my mistake: the Raptor and the Kishock suffer no damage losses while hipfiring (for some reason, while I wrote that, I was thinking of "Viper" instead of "Raptor": might have been the semi-auto thing).

With full weapon + stability passives + MM spec'd for RoF on 4 and accuracy + RoF on 6, coupled with stability + piercing mod on the Revenant itself, it is fairly easy to control uptil mid ranges. And it eats through elites very, very quickly. You still need to burst-fire for long ranges though, and spam Proximity Mines.

I haven't found the Rev to be too useful on the Turian Sentinel though. Not enough control over the weapon for my tastes.

This.

Turians + Hurricane = Assault rifle

With equipment that gun is a beast.

I think the disucssion is guns on Sentinels, not Soldiers.

I use Phaestron if I'm with a group that likes to move around the map a bit, and Mattock if we're camping more.  I do like the Tempest up close though.  I generally setup BE and drain shields/barriers, so I don't shoot a lot.

Dont get me wrong the Phaeston isnt terrible and it seems quite a few people prefer it to the smg's Im just not one of them :P
Interestingly Ive seen it used well on gold by an Infiltrator which is not the usual choice.(he top scored as well).

Huh. I'm not sure how the Phaeston works on an Infiltrator (better than other choices), but that's impressive that he makes it work for him.

I almost always go Falcon + Cyro ammo. I don't have to aim exactly, and it freezes everything.

I spam Warp and Overlord as needed and based on team. Tech Armor turns on if the opponents are getting close and we're not close to killing them.

Sparked quite the discussion!

I'll give the Tempest a shot for sure, and will be waiting till I can get the Phaeston. Thanks to the store ramdomness I now have every Gold weapon but am still missing a few Uncommons, and a lot of Uncommon weapon mods:(

I want a shooter build, and am staying away from being a caster, I've got other classes for that. Overall, I don't do too bad and hope to improve with practice and some upgrades.

As for Phantoms, not being spec'd in CC Overload allows me to strip their barriers in one shot and my weapons handle the rest once they go into panic mode. I also went no-Warp in favor of pure damage and durability, and with a good team I only have issues with Guardians at the moment.

Wait, you want to be competent...on GOLD...playing a Turian sentinel NOT specced into chain overload and NOT specced into warp AT ALL?

/headexplode

If you've "got other classes" for playing casters, then roll a freaking soldier. Seriously, playing a gimped-out sentinel with no warp (lol) and no CC is one of the dumber ideas I've seen around here, and there've been some real doozies.

And I'm not sure you read the post carefully enough to understand the context.

Of your listed choices I would go with the Mattock.

Myself, I prefer the Claymore.

The nice thing about the Phaeston as opposed to the tempest, for example, is simply the ability to drop a piercing mod on it. I tend to run Phaeston with AP and EB or Mattock with same, as well as a tempest with a clip mod for OHGODTHATSTOOCLOSE

I really like the Mattock on my Turian Sentinal, but I've seen some that rock the SMGs and do a bang-up job of it. I think what it comes down it try a few a get comfortable with the one that works best for you.

At least I got to the 3rd page before the elitists started with the insults. Remember that while I'm here asking for specific advice, this is a video game that I purchased with my own money and will play however I want. Plus Soldiers don't have the added damage reduction of Tech Armor, so :P!

I might have to try the CC + Pierce thing. It works so nicely on my Geth Engineer that I notice I miss it. Practically all I ever see on Gold are players running Infiltrators or Engineers, and almost everyone carries a Widow of some kind. I like bringing some balance in, and with all the help so far I think I'm gonna be much better.

Finally unlocked the Krogan Vanguard!!! More learning!!!
