Let's see if I can post and not get flamed for playing on a console.

I read all these great posts about which tactics to use and how to easily engage the enemy and switch things up and it sounds amazing. Sadly, I don't feel like Im having the same experience on the console. Things feel a little sloppy. Perhaps it's a poor use of the AI tactics, or Im just not good at giving commands.

Sometimes I feel like I can issue a command, say to attack a certain target. My char will so, and as soon as I switch to someone else, they wander off to do something else instead of working on their target.

Part of me wonders if I shouldnt nix the ASI tactics all together.

Im really hoping to hear back from some console users as to how they handle the assigning of tasks. I'm enjoying the game immensely, but the idea of playing anything tougher than Casual just irks me because I know I'll have to deal with what seems to be a poorly contrived combat command system. (Yes, I know it's a port, and yes, I know consoles are teh suck compared to the old mouse and keyboard - save your typing)

When I find my companions attacking things that I didn't command them to, it is usually because a "Enemy -> Whatever the main character has selected = attack" (or some such thing) slipped in to their tactics.

It's pretty easy to manage your party if you pause and issue all the commands yourself.  Hold command works wonders.

Console player here :D

The tactics system is amazing, if your someone like me who doesnt like to micromanage each of your party members then tactics are the way to go, for example.

My party consists of myself as a dwarf commoner, DW rogue, specializing in stealth hit and run tactics/ambusher.

Ive got Alistair set as my tank, his tactics are,

attack nearest target

surrounded by at least 2 enemies use taunt

surrounded by at least 2 enemies activate something to do with champion spec lol

then just attack nearest target

Wynne is my arcane warrior/spirit healer, she is an amazing healer and with the AW spec she kicks ass as an off tank, she can take heaps of dmg while maintaining a good steady heal stream.

tactics are primarily set up to keep my tank alive

Alistair drops below 50% health cast heal, that sort of thing.

Morigan is my mage dps/cc

her tactics are set to take advantage of large mobs clustered closely together,

she cause them to attack each other, stun them, put them to sleep etc

Morigan is also a backup healer in case Wynne falls asleep and misses a heal lol

with this setup i never have to micromanage my team, the only time i would do that is against bosses or the tougher fights were some finesse may be needed.

I usually just get my team to hold around a corner or a choke point, i stealth ahead set up traps and drop some nasty backstabs on the closest enemy, usually killing him,

then i run my ass back to my team who ambushes whoever is left after the traps make a mess of them :D

Console player too!

I am making a guess here, but from some of the videos I've seen on YouTube, it looks like PC players have a much more robust camera control. I use the AI tactics all the time to set default behaviors, but I feel great jealousy for screenshots I've seen of an overhead view.

Agreed Dark, one day, when I can afford a better comp, I may pick this up for PC as well just to check out the differences.

I am appreciative that this isn't the standard crapolla port though, all in all it's pretty decent, just wish they had handled the tactical side a little better.

On Xbox 360 here, have been playing on Hard lately, even tried Nightmare for awhile with some fair success, though everything took too long. For me, simple tactics with focused targeting has helped.

Defensive or Cautious Behavior (To pull targets)

1. Self: Health < 25% | Use health poultice least powerful
2. Self: Surrounded by more than OR Being attacked by melee | Self-defense spell/talent/mode
3. Enemy: Nearest visible Mage | Stun / Disable / Knockdown / Damage spell/talent
4. Enemy: Target of Main Character | Stun / Disable / Damage spell/talent
5. Enemy: Target of Main Character | Attack

Anything else is a variation of No. 4. The trick with Defensive or Cautious behavior is to always have the last tactic be "Target of xxxx | Attack" or they sometimes won't do anything (guess the patch might change this). Rather than use up a Tactics slot, I activate and deactivate "running" modes manually, like Shield Wall, Frost Weapons, Song of Courage, Duelist, etc., since once they are on they don't really need a Tactics slot. For my main character, slots No. 3 and on are simply priority targeting with basic Attack, i.e. nearest visible Mage, lowest health, nearest visible, so that the party is still guided when I switch.

Mages usually have an Ally Heal for anyone with < 50% Health in the 3rd slot, and possibly a Lyrium potion auto drink at < 10%. With Mage spells, look at the cooldown times and slot ones with longer times ahead of those with lower ones, or the faster ones will get recast more frequently. And don't place a spell like Lightning in the last slot in place of a basic Attack, or they will run out of mana quickly.

For a stealth Rogue main character who is often targeting someone different from everyone else, change target of Main Character to another character with available Tactics slots and set up a targeting hierarchy.

These are just some ideas. Hope they help.  It's fun when it works.
